Are you seriously calling the Darnold pick a genius move by a GM? First of all he hasn’t played a regular season game yet, and second, EVERY GM in the Jets position would have chosen him. The fact that Gettleman is probably a moron, doesn’t make Mac smarter. But who knows, it’s way too early.

As for the Leo pick, you said it yourself, EVERYONE said he was the most talented player in the draft. (Its the Smith, Mauldin and Petty picks where he should be earning his money)

Of course no one is going to give me the opportunity to draft for a NFL team. That’s a moronic thing to say. But I guarantee you, if I was, I would have picked Williams and Darnold. So to hail Maccagnan as a genius for doing that is ridiculous.

Mac is an idiot for drafting Williams over Beasley

  3. Bowles wouldnt have wanted Beasely bc he couldnt set the edge in college & he believes strongly in run first. So the team is forced to look for perfect OLB prospects & ends up settling for one dimensional unathletic run stuffers

You should never adhere to a draft philosophy like BPA to begin with. You need to look at positions of need, where your strengths and weaknesses as a team are and what are the most difference making positions in the NFL as of that moment in time. Say you desperately need a QB and you spot a potential pro bowl QB in the draft. But he isn't the BPA because some DT is rated slightly higher despite the fact that you're already stacked on the defensive line. You take the QB even though he's not the best player available. He's the right player to take because of the impact of a pro bowl QB on your roster is greater than that of another run stuffer

It was "genius" - or at least gutsy - to trade up to #3 without knowing who would be there.

  7. You are right however it csnt just be positional need..it has to go beyond that both specifically as well as big picture. This team has been below average in passing O & D outside of flash in the pans forever. They dont pass rush, they dont make explosive plays & they fail in the clutch. Theyve failed to fix this time & time again

Yeah, it's like this team decided somewhere years ago that they could win with a strong defense and not much offense. I think this was borne out of how hard it is to find a FQB and an offense-minded HC - the "more reliable" approach is to build a strong defense and hope your offense can be just good enough to eek out wins. It can work - IF you truly have a great defense, a la the 86 Bears for example - but usually the best it produces is an occasional playoff appearance and then one and done.Teams that are consistent SB contenders have great offenses. Yes they usually have an above average "D" too, but it's offense produces consistent winning. The Jets - despite having had their ONLY SB as a result of a great offense (and a great defense), decided somewhere - maybe after Ken O'Brien failed to deliver a SB? - that the "safest" course was to go with "D". In any case, it's been YEARS since they really paid attention to offense, and it's no coincidence they haven't won anything.

Another so called fan who refused to give credit. He moved up from 6 to 3 to be in position to make the pick but nope, no credit.

Everyone would have picked him. Except in Cleveland.
    Or the Giants.

But we had to do it, anyone would. Just two of three passed. But anyone would. Repeat ANYONE.

Leo. Same story everyone would take him. Top pick in the draft. FIVE passed. FIVE. It was a given.

Don't call anyone a moron when you actuallyactually that you're a NFL GM typing in your parents basement. So easy after the fact.

This is true. You can't completely ignore defense but nowadays the NFL makes it so damn hard to purely cover that the surest way to win consistently is to outscore your opponent and have a couple of pass rushers.

Today in the NFL you will go a lot farther with a great offense and very little defense than with a great defense and below average offense. For so many years our strength was stopping the run. Big freaking deal we could do little else. Stop the run in 1976 and you're an NFL contender. But not today.

Even the 2015 Broncos. Yes Manning was on his last legs but that team threw for 4200 yards. They had an offense.

I’m not sure they have willfully ignored the offense.
I mean they spent big money and draft capital on a h.o.f. Rb. Which led to some success behind vinny and then a 1st rd qb. Who knows what happens 99 - 2007 if injuries don’t happen to vinny and Chad.
They used a 2nd on kellen Clemons They brought in Brett Favre to put us over the hump in 2008 but his arm fell off so there goes that.
2009 they draft a qb in the 1st and spent picks and money putting pro receivers around him. Then they fucked that whole thing up
    2012 geno in the 2nd
2015 petty trade up in 4th
    2016 hack in 2nd
    And now here we are.
I’d say a mix of bad luck and incompetence has been the biggest issue with the offense. Id have a hard time accepting neglect as the problem.

I get your point, but what I'm saying is that by "neglect", they just haven't focused on it like they have "D". How many offensive-minded HCs have they hired? And even when they "splurged" in the examples you cited, were these really well thought out, with an eye towards an overall plan or identity? They were really more of grasping at straws it seems.

I've said for a long time that the first thing they need to do is come up with a blueprint for what this team is going to look like, it's identity, then build on that. Maybe with Darnold here now they will finally, but for years their identity was "stout defense", and that hasn't produced much.

    Edit:

Really, what it boils down to is, especially in today's NFL, you need to have a great offense and a great pass rush and with those two main pieces you can win a SB. You're NOT going to do that with a great secondary and a mediocre offense and no pass rush.

I'm not a big Macc fan but he made some decent picks late:

    Peake--7th
    Simon--7th
    Shell--5th (traded 4th)
    Maguire--6th
    Edwards (punter)--7th

Even though Simon was cut and Peake almost, these are decent 7th rounders.

I give him credit for the Teddy move and for the Kearse move.

He definitely screwed us on several picks but overall, he's probably average.

First, the myth that it has to be an offensive minded head coach needs to be dis spelled. Some of the greatest offenses the league has seen were head coaches that were former d coordinators and vice versa.
Ditka, Brian billick,Jon gruden. Conversely the hoodie and dungy both from the defensive side won with h.o.f QBs. We don’t need to have an offensive coach, just a coach that understands what he has at qb and acts accordingly. That’s what encourages me about Bowles. He has used the preseason 2 years running now to try and find a franchise qb. CJ, Bowles Mac seem to be in one page with a plan. We’ll see over the next 2 seasons if they are any good at executing it

The problem is average does not pull a bad team out of the talent hole. He needs to be better than average. It’s asking a lot ,I know but that’s what is going to take .

We'll just start with the Jaguars since you mentioned them (1st) and I'll begin to dissect some of David Caldwell's draft picks dating back to 2013-2017 (5 years).

    1st round picks:

2013 - Luke Joecke (OT): 2nd overall draft pick with a combined 0 Pro Bowl's and/or 0 All-Pro's and no longer on team.

Could've selected and passed on Pro-Bowl and/or All-Pro 1st round O-Lineman such as Lane Johnson, Kyle Long and Travis Frederick. Also passed on the likes of Xavier Rhodes, DeAndre Hopkins and many more.

2014 - Blake Bortles (QB): 3rd overall draft pick with a career losing record of 21-40 (.344%) along with a QB Rating of only 80.8, 0 Pro Bowl's and/or 0 All-Pro's and is anything but a 1st round QB (let alone 3rd overall).

Could have selected and passed on Pro Bowl and/or All-Pro QB's such as Derek Carr (2nd round) and Teddy Bridgewater (32nd). Also passed on the likes of Khalil Mack and Odell Beckham Jr. who were both drafted after "Blake Bortles".

2015 - Dante Fowler Jr (DE): 3rd overall draft pick who many (around here) now consider him a bust and/or an underachiever with 0 Pro Bowl's and/or 0 All-Pro's and one who's 5th year team option was not picked up (and soon to be a FA).

They could've selected but passed on the likes of Leonard Williams and Vick Beasley as Pro Bowl/All-Pro DE's and also passed on the likes of Marcus Peters and Todd Gurley.

Or a 2nd round pick in Myles Jack who's been a huge flop so far. Or who he should have drafted over Jack...

I quit. This is too easy.

You see. If I were to continue and actually venture off even further into this GM's track history throughout his draft(s) consisting of and highlighting other 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th round draft blunders etc and focus simply on his draft failures who are no longer with Jacksonville (and who he "should have taken") etc, etc.

I, myself can also paint a very bad and ugly picture of this guy....

So I suppose that Maccagnan isn't "the only one" who we can play this game with, no?

Not to mention his teams records since becoming GM dating back to 2013 (5 years)...

    2013: 4-12.
    2014: 3-13.
    2015: 5-11.
    2016: 3-13.
    2017: 10-6.

    25-55 (.312%).

So please, I never want to hear about the Jaguars or Caldwell, ever again.

And especially when trying to use Jax/Caldwell as an example over Mike Maccagnan I don't.

When Mike Maccagnan has only completed 3 seasons as Jets GM all when in comparison to that of Caldwell who (after a full 4 seasons of completion) only had a record of 15-49 (.234%) before his 5th year breakout of 2017 with a 10-6 record and AFC Championship game appearance.

It will not be until next year of 2019 (while coming off the leagues most available salary cap space of any other team) where Mike Maccagnan will head into his 5th year (as it was also Caldwell's 5th year with Jax last year during their breakout).

    The Jaguars?
    G.M Caldwell?

Never again do I (we) need to hear about them. Ever.

Not to mention the fact that Caldwell and his Jacksonville Jaguars team are projected to rank 31st next year (2019) and dead last 32nd (2020) in available salary cap space and are in absolute salary cap hell for their foreseeable future...

(which is a topic for another discussion)...

Fair point, but in all those examples, the defensive coach at least understood that he needed a strong offense and worked towards that end. I haven't seen Bowles do that yet, but as you say, maybe with Darnold now it'll be different - we can only hope.

Who is this really? Maccagnan’s wife? Geez. The way your talking about him, you’d think he was Jim Finks.

He paid more than any other GM has in the history of draft trades to move up three spots. Three second round picks is a lot to give up. And you are already putting Darnold in Canton. The kid hasn’t played a regular season down yet. History will show. It could end up being worth it. Or it could be a disaster.

And again with Williams, he’s a good player, but he’s not Lawrence Taylor. No one said he was the top pick with Winston and Mariota in that draft. Did Jacksonville screw up with Fowler? Probably but saying picking Leo in that spot proves he’s a good GM is absurd.

But we have seen it. Fitz was setting franchise records until he flamed out . After that he had geno/Petty to work with them mccown after realizing that he had no other option on the roster. It hasn’t been lack of trying ,he has given every young qb a chance to be the guy. He realizes what it takes, it just a matter of making it happen. He has no excuse now though. By end of 2019 if this team with a blue chip qb prospect isn’t looking like it’s a perennial playoff team/afcc contender it will be time to move on.
