True, but the Jets can't afford that any more than they can afford to pay $4-$5 million for a backup QB. I can't imagine Tennessee being dumb enough to even accept a 2nd for him. He's a cheap backup for them, and with the Titans talking about running Mariota more in the 2016 season, they'd better hang onto Mettenberger because I have a feeling they may need him.

If our starter was injured would you care how much we paid our backup if he was any good?

Geno Smith is only cheap this year before he becomes a free agent (if we did keep him around).

Mettenberger was a sixth round draft pick and makes far less than Geno (he would cost us something in a trade though).

Yes, Mettenberger makes less, but there's no way Tennessee will (or at least should) trade him, and it would take a 2nd or 3rd round pick to get him. The rest would make that much.

To answer your questions, yes, I would care what we would have to pay those players when we have Geno cheaply this season, most of those players are no better than Geno, and cap space is tight. With the difference, Mac could possibly bring in a FA TE, RB or OL and improve the team.

That is what Parcells thought until Vinny went down and we had Rick Mirer leading this team.

Cut Geno and then release him.

What the fuck I'm talking about is the fact that Geno was gonna start over Fitz only for IK to break his jaw. Now there is a possibility however small that Geno starts next year either by out playing Fitz in camp or Fitz getting an injury in camp. I sure as hell don't want Geno starting on this team, but as I said it's a small possibility at the moment, and you can shout at me all day but it won't change the fact that until he's cut that small possibility remains

He doesn't get the benefit of the doubt. Odds are stacked against him, and those words are not positive at all.

Get us a fuccing QB damnit

Seriously though... it kinda bothers me that Petty is going to be 25 going into next season.. How long is this developing shit gonna last? another year or 2? Bryce will be 27! That's not old but damn a lot of other guys that had to develop stepped in around age 25... Petty still at the beginning stages of his development.. have to wonder if Petty isn't ready soon will we move on or what?

    Against an average opponent:

Starting QB is expected to deliver a win

Backup QB is expected to have a 50/50 shot to win.

Geno at this time is the definition of a backup. Spending $$$ or picks on anyone to fill exactly the same shoes is silly. Especially when Jets need both picks and $$ to fill other much more pressing needs.

How in the hell does Geno give us a 50% chance to win?

With our schedule we should be happy if Fitz can crack 50%.

But Geno never "completely outplayed Fitz in camp last year".

It's a fallacy. Geno played well in camp when we were scrimmaging and the red jerseys were on and Fitz was still nursing his broken leg.

    He didn't "completely outplay" Fitz.

You can continue to believe otherwise but it's not going to make it true.

If he moves into the starter role next season as a 26 year old he could be the starter for a decade.

    He's not turning 35.

i know... its not the end of the world at all.. just something i've noticed .. I doubt they throw him in there at 26 though. i can see him being our 2017 starter.. or should be.. if he aint by then what's he gonna be ready by age 30??? lmao

Just saying usually guys come in around 21-22 and develop for a good 3-4 years than start by the time they are Petty's age. Petty is only one year into his development when most young QB's are already ready to step in by that age. He's gonna be like Weeden lol young career old age.

His age doesn't bother me. If he gets in some live games this year either by injury or in blowouts I could definitely see him challenging Fitz next year for the gig. People complaining about Fitz now, wait till HE'S another year older.

    Yup.

It's not an uncommon belief that Geno won the job in camp.... for some people.

If Fitz hadn't still been recovering from the broken leg and therefor been somewhat of an unknown things might've been different.

Also, it's likely TB didn't want to turn camp into a clusterfuck QB controversy and said it was Geno's job to lose going forward...which Geno did...btw.

TB named Fitz immediately after the season ended. Nuff said
