Yes, the hope was that Geno could be the starter because he's younger, has a stronger arm and is more mobile. Fitz was brought in to be a mentor and contingency plan. He hasn't been much in his career, but had a good year last year in Texas so Mac knew him, and he had a good year or two under Gailey earlier in his career and knew Gailey's offense, so he was the best choice. If Mac hadn't signed him, where would we be? I'm not "acting" like anything, simply stating facts. With the way things worked out, if Mac hadn't signed Fitz, in all likelihood, we wouldn't have had the season we did. Do you seriously think if Geno or one of the other jags was the backup instead of Fitz that we would have won 10 games and been in the playoff chase? It would have been interesting to see what happened if the Ik thing never happened, and while it would have perhaps been better for the Jets if Geno had gotten that shot and panned out, he didn't get the shot, and in all likelihood would have been kicked to the curb. It may have been more than 4 games, but also could have been less. I"m not saying that Fitz is the answer. He isn't. In other threads, I've said that I don't think Fitz should just be handed the starting job going into next season. I think it ought to be a three-way competition between Fitz, Geno and Petty. I can understand why Bowles went ahead and named Fitz the starter. I can only hope that if Geno or Petty look sharper in TC that one of them will be named the starter.
IMO the bolded paragraph is the key, and I agree. Last season was a lot easier. He will earn his money this off-season and show what kind of GM we really have.
This off season scares the crap out of me. If recent history is any indicator, this is generally when we misread this past season's "success" as us being "close", which then leads to us trading away picks and signing kickers in the 2nd round. Hopefully, Mac is who we think he is and not like his predecessors.
I don't think we need to worry too much. Mac isn't Tanny. Tanny was was not a scouting/personnel guy. He didn't know how to build a team for long-term success, nor do I think he was trying to do that. He was trying to build a winner quickly. Mac isn't delusional. I think he knows perfectly well what the team needs and has a plan for getting it.
This is so spot on.... and in a sense maybe a silver lining to us missing the playoffs is that hype is diminished a bit and the pressure to be really good next year isnt there. had this team made an AFC championship game run had they got in, the pressure to make short sighted moves would be really strong to me i want to continue to see moves looking more toward 3-4 years out as opposed to next season. i want sustained success, not 2 good years followed by 3 bad ones and then repeating that cycle over and over. i want long term fixes at OT, C, OLB, CB, QB, ILB.
That's why we're going to find out whether Maccagnan is Tannenbaum or if he is a GM hell bent on sustained winning. It'd be really easy to look at last year and say "wow we're only a player or two away" and go all in. Tannenbaum would. There's no way he would've kept this year's first round pick if be could get an edge rusher for it. We'll see what Mac does.
omgz he didn't land us a sure franchise qb in his first season as gm working with the previous gms scouting department. you sound like a clown.
Considering how good improved Geno looked pre-season, making better reads, throwing the ball away, etc. 10 wins against the weakest schedule we've ever had would have been a minimum. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
no, clowns are what we get anytime this team dips under .500. do i need to drag up the half dozen 10+ page threads with people calling the front office morons for not starting and then getting rid of matt simms?
i know the schedule is weak, but you have to factor in how much worse we would be if you replace a guy who broke jets passing records with the worst qb in football i think we improve on 4-12, but not by much. like 5 or 6 wins
You're nuts if you think he replicates Fitzpatrick's season or this team goes 10-6 with him under center.
For thinking a guy who can throw drastically further downfield could throw more yards? For thinking a guy who is faster could rush for more yards?
For thinking he has the gamesmanship anywhere near Fitz. A better arm while standing there cleanly does not equate to more passing yards The Jets apparently are starting to move on.....know what I'm sayin'?
Fitz had lost the QB competition last year and had a good season. If the QB that had outplayed him played all season, who knows where we'd be today. But I'm happy with Petty. I can't wait to see him start.
Really Geno lost it due to injury. TB named Fitz the starter already next year. I suppose the roles could be reversed this coming season. I sure hope not
There was no quarterback competition and all reports were that Geno sucked in camp up until he got socked in the face. He was also gifted the quarterback job by Gailey before camp started. He has a big arm, shit accuracy and no game awareness.
