pay fitz big money and we wont see the playoffs for another 5 or 6 years either. nobody is saying "dont pay anyone" they are saying dont pay a below average qb 9+ million dollars to help lead you to 8-10 wins and a fringe shot at the playoffs. this boards love affair with mediocrity at QB is beyond me. there is no reason to give fitz 8 when you can give a laundry list of guys just as mediocure 5 million

Name a better option. Fitz excelled in our offense and he is smart. We haven't had a smart QB since Chad.
A lot of younger fans got used to Tanny, Rex and Idzik and their idiotic ways of being predictable and telling too much to the media. We finally have a professional GM and HC and now some fans don't know how to react. They let their own anxieties overrule what's best for the team.
Well, for a "smart" QB he threw the 5th most interceptions in the league for a "smart" QB he was 29th in completion percentage for a "Smart" he had quite a few ill advised runs and head first dives, one resulting in him getting injured and missing a game. as far as "excelling" in our offense. i think that is a pretty blatant overstatement. other then TD passes, he was in the lower half of the league in every major passing statistic(Comp %, INT, Yards, Y/A, QB Rating). he wasnt the trainwreck that Geno smith was, but lets call a spade a spade. Fitz is a replacment level quarterback. you put any mediocure QB on a jets team with those weapons at WR and with gailey and your getting similar play (average passing statistics with a high volume of touchdowns). I dont think there are many worse options then paying fitz 10-18 million. I'd roll the dice with any of Foles, RG3, Hoyer, TJ Yates... I'd even argue that Geno smith at 1.2 Million is a better option then Fitzpatrick at 10+ million, and no one here hates geno more then me.
because it would prevent us signing young players currently on the team to long term deals. it also increases this silly "win now" window preventing us from looking into log term solutions and throwing more money into win now pieces. a smart person would realize we are still in the middle of a rebuild. i believe mac is smart, which is why im not nervous when it comes to giving fitz big money. This team needs to ignore last season, and continue to build an infrustructure than can sustain success. and you do that by adding young players, depth, and not giving big money to mediocure old guys
The long term deals for those players would not start until after 2016. And nobody here wants to pay Fitz significant guaranteed money beyond 2016.
Last night I had a dream that the Jets resigned Fitz for 12m. I could see it happening once the dust settles.
At least that Cro contract was not guaranteed past year 1. I'm guessing Todd had some say in bringing him in as well. Also, I know I'm nit picking, but it's week in, and week out. It's not weekend, and week out.
I think a $10-12 million 3 year for Fitz is what I'd like. $18 is just too much. If he wants more years than immediate money simply make it heavily performance based and if by some dumb chance he's finally found his calling and plays a great couple of years he will still make it out ahead. There is a potential he's looking for a longer term deal due to his family and doesn't want to be out of the league in two years. His propensity to run and not slide makes him an injury risk at his age however. At this juncture he's a good stopgap measure and I think it's the best immediate fit. People tend to forget when he was in Buffalo for his big contract the Bills had basically one good receiver playing at any given time. I think Gailey knows his limits and knows how to use him. Outside of Fitz though I think the salary cap situation is really their biggest stumbling block right now making a lot of maneuvering difficult.
I agree. Why can't it be mostly performance based? If he throws 35 TD's this year and we make the playoffs, give him 15 mill. If he throws 20 and we go 6-10' he get 7. That's fair.
This is done before TC. I don't see this dragging on much past that as it then becomes counter productive for everybody involved.
As time drags on I have a harder and harder time envisioning Fitzpatrick returning. The Jets have very little cap space at this point and the longer the market drags out the less likely they feel the need to up the offer to him. If there are no other bids out there above yours and you have no cap space, well at a certain point it's just take it or leave it and we'll move on. The longer it drags out the more likely the Jets make a necessary move that precludes even the offer level they currently have on the table. I'm beginning to think this is going to be a pivotal year for the Jets with an old name or two moving on under circumstances that come as no surprise when we look back at the situation.
I'm not so certain he won't return, I guess it depends on what if any other offers he gets. Denver, the next most interested team it appears has no real money to work with either. One thing I don't want to see them do as a result is resign Quigley because they're too distracted by this nonsense lol.
