I'll move on when that QB Coach is ready to take over Gailey's playcalling duties and the Jets continue to have the same offensive philosophy. I know breaking Jet records isn't a big deal, but systematically, we had something special going on on offense last yr, now everyone wants to fire Gailey. It's going to be critical to have the same system going into yr 2 and 3 for Hack and Petty. I don't have much of a problem with the play-calling, I do have a problem with the execution, the over-targeting of Marshall earlier on, the missed plays down the field. Everyone always wants to blame the OC. We run up the gut because our tackles freaking suck, and our guards and centers are better. Imagine running to the outside with freaking Breno trying to do something. Not worth the down. Not going back to the dark ages. Seen far worse OCs.
I'm calling it a sophomore slump. I think the big mistake was bringing back Fitz. Petty should have started the season.
Bringing Fitz back after a highly dramatic and stupid contract standoff put a weird black cloud around the team going into the season IMO. Instead of signing Fitz who screwed us with the cap, but also with his piss poor play and lack of respect for the organization, Geno should have started. Now Geno got injured and we will probably never know what could have been. The criticisms are fair of Geno, but Jets really gave up on him prematurely. By the time Geno was named starter, the damage was done, Fitz had screwed us, set us back, and now we find ourselves in a position where Fitz nor Geno will be on this team come next season. The decision to retain Fitz and cave to his demands doomed the 2016 season IMO.
Spot on. Well said. The play design to me looks awesome. The route trees run by the receivers provides great spacing and always has a receiver down the field to stretch the field. A lot of the playcalling was obviously handcuffed because of Fitz' limitations. Early on, I wanted Gailey gone because of it, until I realized that it was mainly Fitzpatrick that was the problem.
When Fitz didn't get benched for his poor play, accountability went out the window and it felt like players could do anything they wanted without repercussion.
Hopefully Gailey continues to get ASJ involved and MAYBE we get 20+ catches from a TE next season. The offense works, but Fitz handicapped the offense far too much and lost trust in the process.
Exactly. When he kept on trotting Fitz his message fell on deaf ears. Can't continue to preach accountability and continue to play the worst QB in the league who would seemingly throw away games on a weekly basis. That's why if Bowles gets fired I won't be upset. He hasn't done anything to make me feel like he can magically put things together
In my humble opinion our 2016 season went south the moment Decker went down for the season. 100% or our 2015 non-Ivory magic came through the air and through some gusty running by Fitz. Marshall/Decker tandem with some unknown kid Quincy Enunwa gave Fitz a WR core that was almost impossible to cover. And when enough D was assigned to cover it, Fitz just ran for 10 yrs or handed off to Ivory. Having 3 big, fast, rout running targets AND an above avg RB almost guarantees 4000 yrs, 30 TDs, and 10 wins. Losing Decker made our entire offense much, much easier to cover/shut down. Offenses are rarely better than their 3rd passing option. I really HOPE Marshall comes back next year and pairs with Quincy on the outside and Decker back in the slot. Add in Anderson and Peek here and there. Give Petty an entire TC with these cats and Jets will be just fine next year.
OC's follow orders. If Bowles wants a more dynamic offense he can hire a new play caller. If Petty is the QB going forward they need someone that fits his abilities.
