You can't isolate the play of a rookie QB from what the offense is doing schematically and hope to come away with anything of value in the process. The Jets SHOULD have run the ball on 2nd and goal from the 5 in the first half. There's no argument for not doing that, particularly when Sanchez was looking a bit disjointed already, which he was. If you have to throw the ball at 3rd and 4 or 5 then you do that, but to throw it on 2nd and 5 when the Fins had demonstrated no ability to shut down the big formation the Jets used on 1st and goal from the 9 was just a poor decision by the OC. The exact same thing is true of the sequence that cost the Jets the game at the end. Once you get down low in the red zone you run until the Fins make you pass. Yes, the Fins have a good run defense. No, it was not shutting down the Jets today. Run the damn ball and if you have to go to the pass. If the Jets had scored on the 2nd and 6 from the 8 they'd have given the Fins 90 seconds to go down the field and kick a tying or winning FG depending on if the Jets made the 2 pt conversion. Schotty, as he has been for much of his stay with the Jets was out of sync with the game state for a lot of the game. Calling a brilliant sequence of plays that has nothing to do with the reality of where the Jets are at the moment is not exactly brilliant. Edit: I will say that if Schotty's sole task for this season is developing Mark Sanchez then you can make a better case for some of his calls. If his tasks are to develop Sanchez AND to win games you can't.
Miami has the worst secondary in the league, the passing game was working in the second half. If we ran and failed the very same people complaining that we passed would be complaining that we ran and failed.
What's amazing is that with all those things you listed we still had a chance to win the game at the end and didn't. I'm confused though with #5 If Pennington was not allowed to audible in this offense, Brett Favre wasn't allowed to audible why would Sanchez have the green light to audible?
Yes, if the Jets kick the 2 PATs then there's no way the Fins don't just kick the PAT on their last score maintaining a 4 pt margin at the end.
Really? A 1 yard gain was the worst thing that could have happened? It's the entire team's job to make sure the team doesn't lose. Not just Schotty.
Yes, but we passed and failed. And passing if successful likely would have left us in worse shape in terms of time left on the clock than running and succeeding. I just don't understand why Schotty and the offensive staff are unwilling to fully exploit the Jet rushing attack this season. Alan Faneca is still a great run blocker. Why were his failings in the pass protection department allowed to become the deciding factor in the game at the end? What's that all about?
Uhhh... Pennington and Farve audbiled all the time. Either that or choosing between the run and pass call that they are given at the beginning of the play.
Did you watch the same game as everybody else? The sack was the worst thing that could have happened and it did. As for your other post When did Chad or Farve have a green light to audible? I don't recall any instances....
I would have preferred a run call on 2nd and 6 but to pin this defeat on one play call when we just handed the Dolphins 21 points is beyond crazy, especially considering it was the offense that kept the game close and gave the team a chance to win it at the end. Unfortunately Faneca did let the team down in a big spot and Sanchez couldn't get rid of the bakll without taking a crucial sack in a huge spot.
What is also forgotten,is that we were successfully running the ball early, and it was abandoned. We were dominating field position, started throwing the ball unsucsessfully and lost the field position. Play calling
The sack happened on 3rd down, and that was Faneca's fault if anything. When a qb is given a play, they are often given 2 plays to choose from (one run, one pass). Based on what they see, they pick the play to go with. I'm pretty sure that Chad and Farve have audibled on top of choosing between run or pass.
We really were running the ball well. I mean, we scored 3 points during the first half! We were dominating with our running game that was averaging under 4.0 yards per attempt.
^The sack happened on 2nd and 3rd Down. On 4th, it was a busted play and Sanchez threw it out of the endzone. Maybe you didn't watch the same game...
1st-10, MIA12 1:56 T. Jones rushed to the left for 3 yard gain 2nd-7, MIA9 1:50 M. Sanchez rushed up the middle for 1 yard gain 3rd-6, MIA8 1:42 M. Sanchez sacked by R. Starks 4th-13, MIA15 1:06 M. Sanchez incomplete pass to the left There you go.
? We didn't move the ball at all during the 1st quarter. I distinctly remember us not moving the ball even though we started at the 35-yard line on every drive. Please show me an instance where the running game was dominating.
But you don't know for fact if he was given two plays? You must be confusing the Jets offense with the Colts because I've never seen them call plays at the LOS as long as Schotty has been here.
We ran the ball 40 times we got 7 first downs rushing and 127 net rushing yards. We threw the ball 35 times had 14 first downs and 251 net yards passing. We were 3 for 5 in the red zone. We controlled the clock for over 34 minutes. We lost the game on special teams.
