+1 At this point since apparently he is going to be on the team, we have nothing to lose by trying this when the games don't count. Hell if he can hold his own, against anyone, se should get a couple of shots in the Regular sesaon.
I think the problem with getting him to put on 20-30 pounds is that he is worried his six pack wont show through. The guy isnt dedicated to being the best football player he can be, thus he will never make it in the NFL, Bottom line.
Why did we have to waste a top 10 pick on a nub like Gholston. Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. I wish we had Leodis McKelvin opposite Revis right now.
i don't know how you can say that.he may suck and was drafted way to high but you don't know what his dedication is.there has been no stories about him being late to practice or meetings,he;s not getting in trouble off the field,he stays in shape.if dedication was a factor i believe he'd be gone right now.(see k.r.)
Ding! Ding! Ding! WINNER! Gholston has been tried at DE during Pre-season AND the Regular season under Mangini. It does make some sense to put him there because the times he would use his used his one and only bull-rush move he helped to slowly-but-surely collapse the pocket. The problem with him at DE is, he can't contain runs to the outside. He'll gladly take up a block and that's pretty much it. He's like a retarded robot that can only handle 1 command at a time. And whatever that command is, he does it BADLY.
If Ryan wanted to mix in some 4-3 front and have Gholston be the DE---then that would make sense. There is more upside to sliding a bigger DT to DE in the 3-4 then sliding a smaller 3-4 OLB to DE. If we added another bigger body (or had Pouha in at the same time), I would love to see Jenkins get (more) reps at the DE position...b/c he is able to collapse the pocket and add pressure from any position on the line.
I'd love to see someone interview Ghost and see what he thinks about the bust label on him. I can't imagine anyone wanting their reputation to be a bust even with the money he's received.
Q: "Vernon, how do you feel about JETS fans considering you a "Bust" of a draft pick and not living up to your expectations." Vernon Gholston: "Well it's a little disappointing......um, have I shown you the photos of my new ocean front vacation home in Key West?" :shit:
Go with what works...obviously LB isn't working..so go with what he has been good at in the past...I hope to God we can salvage this kid ...the thing I worry about is the killer instinct.
This is a good idea... Except Gholston should get some snaps lining up as a DE when they run the 4-3 in certain packages. Before he's absolutely stamped "bust" we need to see how he'd play rushing the passer with his hand on the ground in the 4-3. If they keep him around this year, they should definitely give him some opportunities here.
Its not your opinion thats exactly what a 3-4 does. We dont need a pussified DE getting man handled at the line of scrimmage.
We have tried out gholston at DE in our 4-3 packages; frankly, it was embarrassing ergo why he road the pine
Thanks, good to know some things still stick  Like you said, he can't contain outside, but happily eats away whats in front of him. He just looks completely overawed in the Pro game. Is it his fault? No I don't think so, he did what he does best in the combone and wowed ALOT of well respected scouts. This board was like 50/50 on him, but him getting drafted so high with so much expectation, is NOT his fault, its our teams. Now all that remains is that someone holds their hand up and says I'm the bust for selecting him.
Unlike most, I am willing to give him another shot here.. but if he fails to do anything the beginning of next season, that's it he's gotta go. I mean he came out of school a year early, plus due to NCAA restrictions or whatever it was, he was unable to show up to the Jets offseason program until late, so he was behind the 8-ball to start. Then Mangini gave him pretty much no shot, while he had to learn a new position and a new system. Then second year, a new coach with a whole new philosophy came in that he had to learn. Since he came out a year early, this really should have been his rookie year. Yes, he sucked. But he has all the physical tools, we have a ton of money invested in him, and a second year of coaching by Rex might actually get him to record a single sack. As bad as he's been, I think we should give him 1 more shot. I mean I'm probably going to regret saying this, because he looks like he doesnt give a crap and doesnt know how to actually play football.. but oh well. I just think it's a little premature to totally write him off.
Fucking A. With all the resources dedicated to scouting college players, it is amazing to me that someone w/o any football skills can be drafted in the first round, much less w/ the sixth overall pick.
