Don't know much about Dawan, but LaRon is like a land shark, always there and occasionally goes in for the kill, as someone (Coach Crisp??) a few posts back said, someone to occasionally take a lid off.
He's a better option than Eric Smith, isn't he? We aren't going to find a big time playmaker at safety in this year's draft. It's just a relatively weak safety class.
Eric Smith is really only good as an extra SS when we need to plug the run. In pass coverage, he's a huge liability. Brodney Pool has been average so far. I haven't seen him give up many plays but he hasn't really made any, either. Leonhard is Leonhard. He knows what he's doing and he'll always be in the right position to make a play.
Eric Smith is a special teamer. He has no business being on the field if he's consistently getting burned by mediocre tight ends. I understand that he's our best option as an in-the-box safety, but we can definitely upgrade.
Agreed. But Imo the problem isn't Smith... he's a n°3 S that should only come in in certain types of plays. The problem is Pool so far hasn't been good enough when we need a "classic" FS! I have no problem with E. Smith, as long as they ask of him what he is capable of doing (basically that extra S you were talking about). PS I know he wouldn't solve the problem (at least not straight away) and he doesn't have the speed etc etc... but boy would I love to give Myron Rolle a try from that Titans Practice squad... I also wouldn't mind giving George Wilson (Bills) a chance on a decent team.
If you notice, the Jets plug Ihedigbo in at goal line running plays instead of Smith. Dig has made plays in these settings. Please correct me if both Smith and Dig are in during goal line but I haven't seen it.
Question to the draftnik's... where shoul Deunta Williams, Rahim Moore and DeAndre McDaniel go? (top 3 rated safeties atm) What kind of value do they offer?
