that's not how it works lol. that's like saying mangold could beat out jonathan harrison so we cut him, or harris couldn't beat out freddit bishop. money plays a factor as well and the eagles are one of the most cash strapped teams in the NFL right now they have about 6.3 mil and need to sign rookies (and that's with the money saved from cutting DGB) and next year they only have 1 mil which will be negative by the time they sign their rookies this offseason. you can't pay a guy who is going to be your 5th receiver any sort of good money. those guys make the bare minimum.
Not every player has a peyton manning or curtis martin like work ethic. doesn't mean they aren't putting in the work. look at the flak ODB caught for his boat trip last year. he's still a top 3 WR. And I never hear great things about his work ethic but he clearly puts in enough
Nice try, the Eagles have over $6 million and have signed all 7 draft picks. The are expected to free up between $31 and $56 million more next season. Could easily have afforded DGB. Your making absolutely stupid comparison between him and HOF Players. If DGB put 1/2 the effort to hone his craft as you put into trying to convince us he is worth signing, he could be a special player. Unfortunately, he has never been willing to do so
6mil is not much at all. you don't want to pay your 5th WR that much when you are that low. Also "expected" to free up lol where did you get those numbers. If they cut their top 5 savings players (johnson, peters, currey, brooks, jenkins) that would be about 25.5 mil and be a huge hit in the talent department. plus jeffrey is on a 1 tear deal so if he stays healthy they are going to want to pay him to stay. add in ryan and jordan matthews both of which they would like to keep (espcially jordan, they could let ryan walk) gratz, bradhim, smith as well. and money to sign rookies. they are in the hole right now. even with the 6 mil carryover that's 7 mil before cuts. that's enough to cover rookies. not enough to bring back any FAs or sign anyone big. Sure they'll make a cut or 2 and make some hard decisions but as of now they have very little cap space and need to cut whatever they can. and again they signed 2 big name WRs and have 2 high picks of theirs ahead of DGB. had they not landed jeffrey and smith they wouldn't have cut DGB
Let's clarify, DBG was due $975 k, they promptly signed Dane Evans to fill his roster spot so the savings are right around $500k. Players who could be released next year, some could even be cut when the team has to drop to 53 man roster are : Jason Peters saving $10.25 million Vinny Curry saving $6 million Malcom Jenkins $5.5 million Mychal Kendricks $4.4 million Brandon Graham $6.5 million Jason Kelce $6 million Brent Celek $4 million Torrey Smith $5 million Ron Brooks $2.1 million Darren Sproles $4 million releasing Peters, Kendricks, Kelce, Celek, Smith and Brooks, the most likely players to be released gives them $36 million. It could go up to $47 million if they also decide to move on from Jenkins and Curry, but i don't count on it. Given their likely draft position, the rookie pool will be around $ 5 million , leaving at least $31 million.Plus the cap increase. That should be enough to sign Jeffery, Jernigan, Hicks, Graham and Matthews and Blount if they want to. They could easily draft a RB and save more. Plus they can restructure contracts if they really want to. So again your argument is without merit. The $500 thousand they saved could easily have been absorbed if they wanted BGB on the roster. To your last statement, DBG was beat out not for the #1 or 2 WR spot, but the 3 Rd 4th and 5th spot. Did the Giants need Marshall? The Pat's need Cooks? No but they produce, something DBG has failed to do.
evans was an UDFA making a minimum. he won't count against the cap as of now and likely won't make the team. only the top 51 players count and most teams are at the 75 player limit currently. evans means nothing and in reality they saved about 321k (BDG 945k - lowest player 624k) admittedly a very small amount. So admittedly it wasn't all cap related (but it helps) but more of this "They have Alshon Jeffery, Torrey Smith, Jordan Matthews, Nelson Agholor and rookies Mack Hollins and Shelton Gibson. That's six wide receivers right there, the maximum number teams usually keep, and it doesn't even include the undrafted guys who will battle for spots in training camp." Same could be said of decker. we released him. he was a good player, good locker room guy, didn't want to leave, we had plenty of cap room. I'm sure someone on another teams forum was making a thread of lets sign decker and someone like you was like "he's old he sucks if the jets cut him you know he's bad, he's injury prone yada yada yada" As far as the releases, philly isn't going to gut their team. they'll make some hard choices for sure, maybe get a restructure or 2, but outside of sproles and brooks i can't see anyone else going off that list. I'm not going to argue that he's better then jeffrey, or smith, or matthews. he's clearly not. he was the 2nd best WR philly had last eyar, which is why they signed 2 new starters this offseason at the position. My argument is that DGB is a better (and more proven commodity) then the likes of jalin marshall, and a whole host of other UDFA WRs we have that will get cut. we have enunwa, anderson, peake, and 2 rookies and then a whole bunch of low tier guys competing for the last 1-2 spots. (because marshal is out 4 games anyway so isn't counting against the roster) IDK who you can argue he's worse then the likes of that long list of competing players we have. If we had jeffrey and smith or even marshall and decker like last year, plus andeson and enunwa i wouldn't care less, but i this case a cheap 24 year old WR who could wind up starting for us day 1 is worth a flyer on. if he fails, we cut him and no loss
I'll end with this just because it's fun to point out your nonsense. Teams are at 90 players. New rules, one cutdown from 90 to 53 players. The figures I gave you are top 53. Don't have to include the last 2 yet but they do end up counting!!! Mack Hollins and Shelton Gibson are why DGB is gone, he couldn't beat them out. Decker is a probowl player who has Performed, DGB has not!!! What are you basing your statement on that he is clearly better than our receivers on? Certainly not production, work ethics, character , leadership or history. Jalin is a bubble player at best and is far from a sure bet to make the roster. We're rebuilding, young, COMPETITIVE, HUNGRY players are what we need. Not a lazy player who wants to try and get by on athleticism. As far as the players I listed, the ones I named as likely cuts, are just that.Likely. Philly has depth and most of the players listed are all ready being phased out. Zach Ertz over Celek for instance plus they have Trey Burton They want to move Lane Johnson over to the left tackle spot so Peters is likely gone. Schwartz isn't a fan of Curry, he barely played in 2016 , Dead cap is the issue there. The Eagles have tried to trade Kendricks the last two offseasons and there's been talk he may retire. Isaac Seumalo is being groomed to replace Kelce Torrey Smith if Mack Hollins or Shelton Gibson -- show signs of being a starter season, Smith will be gone. Brooks wasnt very good before his injury in 2016, likely wont be on the roster in 2017, definitely won't be in 2018. Now back to the Jets....
It's true though we have been doing this for years .Our last good tight end was Dustin Keller .He had a few good years and we haven't had anyone even capable since then.We all thought Amaro was gonna be the answer sadly he was just another bum.Now we just sign random guys to fill the roster
nah dude, everything you say is trash and nonsense. you just don't like looking at things objectively, your all emotion and no logic. You don't think DGB is hungry to try and land a huge deal? and the best way to do it is to take a 1 yea prove it deal. he is young and hungry and you are making baseless claims about his work ethic
shouldn't he have been hungry when he dropped from the first round? what about when he was getting kicked off the team in college? you are talking out of your ass, facts are tennessee didn't want him, philly had him and went and found other wr's and once they did promptly cut him, young and hungry as he is.
Exactly what I was about to post. There were many times DGB had the opportunity to turn things around but he just continued to think he could rely on his athletic ability alone never making the effort to learn the offense or improve his game. He someday may finally get it and put in the extra effort, but there have been no indications he is ready to do it. This young team is not the place for a bad influence no matter the talent level.
