When we had key injuries we stayed close, when you guys started to get hurt you folded. No excuses from the Sox.
I forgot about Rivera, he wasn't listed on the injury transaction thing. He must not have gone on the DL. But by the time he was hurt the division was wrapped up anyway, so it wasn't that big a deal. Randy Johnson made 33 starts, he wasn't an injury. Farnsworth appeared in 72 games, neither was he. Pavano is what he is, basically a wash with Clement. Even Mussina, though he was on the DL, made 32 starts. The only realy losses the Yankees had to deal with were Sheffield and Matsui, and they replaced one of them with Abreu. If you really think the Yankees injuries even come close to the area of the nieghborhood that holds the ballpark that the Red Sox injuries are in, you're nuts.
we got Abreu 3 months later, we kept it together w/ young players. We lost Sheff and Matsui for most of the year, lost Cano another month and lost other players here and there. our injuries were HUGE but we kept pace and didnt' allow a healthier Sox team to run away w/ it. Then we made trades(still weren't healthy) and found our stride and ran away w/ it while Boston took a nosedive once they had some injury problems.

Look, I'm not trying to argue that the Yankees had more significant injuries. However, we did have quite a few. Remeber, we lost Cano for a long time too. The reason the Yankee injuries don't look as big is because the Yankees had far more depth this year than the Sox. (Even a Sox fan has to admit that, right?) Honestly, more than positional players stepping up, we have to give more credit to Proctor and Villone. They carried the team for a long time this year. Johnson started games, but got rocked quite a few times. Wright never got out of the 6th. Moose pitched hurt until we finally had a divisional lead. Farnsworth missed many games that we needed him due to things like stiffness, like Mo, the number of games doesn't tell the story. More than the addition of Abreu to fill in for Sheff, we had Cabrera jump into Matsui's spot. Bernie played some of his best OF in years while in RF for Sheff most of the year. It's fair to say that the Sox were more weakened by their injuries than the Yankees were by theirs. However, that's only half the story. The Yankees had the players to jump in and fill spots until guys got healthy again. For the Sox, all the eggs were in the same basket.
What does this list prove? You guys lost no tryly important players until Timlin and he sucked when he was healthy anyway. we lost Cano, Sheff, Pavano and Matsui- say pavano isn't important but the other 3 sure are and we kept pace until we got a little healthier and made some moves but the minute important guys like varitek went down you guys folded and even w/ your injuries you never had 3 guys on the DL at the same time the caliber of sheff, matsui and Cano. you guys lost b/c you made a bad decision letting Damon go and replacing him w/ Crisp, Beckett had a bad year and it looks like you got rooked in that deal and your pen outside of Papelbon was bad. we both had injury problems but our team was able to overcome and win the division AGAIN while your team is back to it's familiar role of watching baseball in october on TV.
