This is 2015. There are still glaring holes at other positions on the team. If Mac had really wanted to focus on 2016 now, re-signing Mo would have been one of his first moves imo. The fact that he didn't says one of two things to me. One, that he isn't going to worry about that now. That he has more pressing issues to deal with fixing current problems and will focus on signing Mo and Snacks long term later. OR Two, he's had enough conversations with Mo and/or his agent to realize that he's probably not going to be able to come to an agreement, and will either look to franchise Mo or trade him. I think it's probably #1 and I hope it is, but I don't think that it's out of the realm of possibility that it could be #2. As several people have pointed out, the cap will go up by a pretty good amount next season, and much of the money that this year's newly-signed FAs will be getting will come this year. If I'm mistaken, please forgive me, but I thought that you were one of those people. Thus, there should be plenty of money to re-sign the three of them next year or during the course of this season. If worse comes to worse, Snacks is not irreplaceable, neither is Coples. Snacks is very good against the run and cheap, but offers little in the way of a pass rush. Coples is better in setting the edge and against the run than in rushing the passer. I don't think that it will come to losing one of them, however. Regardless, you don't draft a player at #6 for what could happen in 2016, especially when you know what's definitely GOING to happen in 2015 if you don't address certain deficiencies on the OL and at OLB.
Much like a game of chess that is exactly what you do. I am not discounting our needs on OL or OLB but stressing that our needs on the DL are equally important. The smart move would be to lock up Snacks, Davis, and either Wilkerson or Coples now. From the lack of action involving Wilkerson, trading him and locking up Coples could be the smart move. Coples - Williams - Richardson could be a younger and cheaper alternative to keeping the guys we have now.
I don't understand why re-signing Mo wasn't a priority. That concerns me. As I have stated in another thread, if I was Mac, that would have been the VERY FIRST THING I DID once scouting and pro personnel changes were made. I would have sent a clear message to Mo and the rest of the team that we respected and appreciated Mo, wanted him to remain a Jet for the rest of his career, and were going to take care of our own. At this point, it's too late. I think the only one of those three that Mac would have the financially ability to lock up long term would be Snacks, and he's the least important member of that group. You still don't take Williams when the Jets have glaring needs at OLB and OG. One could use your rationale to say that the Jets should take Mariota because Fitz is old and not that good anyway, and Geno hasn't proven that he can be consistent. One could also use it to justify taking the best OLB since Pace and Babin are older and slower and may not be on team coming out of TC and especially next season. One could also use it to justify taking a White or Cooper at #6 because Marshall is older and may not be on the team next year, and it can take WRs a while to develop. One could definitely use it to justify staying put or trading down a little and taking the best LT prospect in the draft, because Brick's skills are eroding rapidly and will have a $17 million cap hit next season. It seems to me that you are obsessing about Williams and trying to come up with a rationale to justify getting him, rather than looking at real team needs at present and looking to resolve them. The problem you suggest at DL could never materialize. Meanwhile, Williams would be wasted sitting on the bench. Is he even a suitable candidate to play NT in a 3-4 alignment or is he more of a 4-3 DT?
You are way too focused on what you think our needs are which means that you are not keeping your eyes on the prize. While the average NFL career is roughly four years a high first round pick is something that you want to contribute to your team for a decade. If everything goes to plan you draft a player that is so good that you resign him or extend him beyond his rookie contract and he is with you for at least eight years. What are our needs five years from now? Unless you can answer that question with confidence you do not know what our team needs. If you are uncertain of need you take ..... wait for it ...... the best available player.
He can do both, but it's a waste having him as a 3-4 DE. He would be best playing 4-3 DT, then move him around as a defensive end as he has the pass-rushing skills and ability to get to the QB. If the Jets don't resign Wilkerson - you can trade Wilk, get Williams and not have any drop-off [you could make an argument that the line improves as Leonard is a better pass-rusher]. I hope the Jets resign Wilkerson. I still look at Randy Gregory and I think he would be the best compliment to this defensive line. I know his combine wasn't all that great, but the tape at the end of the day, the guy has an insane motor. Gregory can play both the 3-4 / 4-3. I think Fowler might go to the Jags. QB, ILB, pass-rusher, tackle. We need to improve on those 4 positions and I think we can be set, if we resign Wilkerson. This draft - you see pass-rusher and MAYBE you got linebackers available that can contribute on your team for the next 5 to 10 yrs. I am saying this with a notion that both QBs won't be on the board when the Jets pick.
The Browns are pretty well-stocked at DE. They have a lot of good players there they just had waaay too many injuries last year. They had three guys at DE miss at least 11 games last season and other guys miss multiple games as well. This would be more likely to happen for Shelton than for Williams, as they absolutely need to get another playable nose tackle (and frankly I'm surprised they haven't tried to reach a deal with Snacks' agent with only a 2nd-round tender on him.) They may still draft another 5T DE in the first (Malcom Brown actually would be my pick at 12 if there... I just like him that much), but I can't see them trading up for one. JMO.
It looked like he said draft Leonard Williams at 6 if you have a deal in place of Wilkerson for 12 & 19.
Sorry, but your first and fourth sentences are utter BS. You're making yourself look bad, and showing yourself to be delusional imo. Our needs five years from now could be basically the same as they are now or could radically be different depending upon the moves that are made in FA and the draft over the next 5 years, and how they work out. Injuries can also change things dramatically. There's no way anyone can say with certainty exactly what the Jets' needs will be in 5 years. Of course one has to take the long-term view as well as the short term, but when one has a glaring need that is going to continue to undermine the team's ability to win, could cause injuries to happen to other players, or at the very least undermine a position of strength or weaken a unit (offense or defense), then that need has to be focused on and addressed immediately. It has to take priority over a need five years down the road. The Jets could wind up taking the BPA in the 7th round and it could be a DT who surprises everyone ala Brady and becomes a solid starter, if not a star. LOTS of things can happen over a five year period. If Mac ignored pressing needs to address a possible situation that could exist 2 years from now, he could be out of a job in 2 years and no one would care that he prevented a problem 2 years down the road. All they would care about is that he failed to address a glaring need or needs that were at the core of the team's struggles. The very idea that he should ignore immediate pressing needs for a possible need on the strongest unit on the team two years down the road is nothing short of sheer lunacy. Get a grip on reality.
I would have to disagree with this one. I would take the QB. We have our "Williams" in Sheldon Richardson. I can acquire a pass-rusher in the 2nd round in a player like Nate Orchard.
I won't argue that with you. But Williams would be the best available player if there at 6 even if Mariota is there on the board.
This is where you and I differ. It is this type of thinking that only leads to mediocrity. Passing up superior players for lesser players that fill a need is a horrible idea.
If the best player in the draft falls to 6 you take him...idc the needs. That's bpa and a steal. The jets would be remiss to let him fall past them if they value him as the #1 player in the entire draft. I believe when a severe bpa is in your lap, to hell with needs you take the talent. If he is the best player in the draft, I don't think Williams will be there at 6, it does not mean that the Jets are getting the 100th best player in the draft if they go OLB and select Beasley whom I like, or Fowler. There are 3 OLB in this years draft that maybe 2,3,4 behind Williams, would you be upset if the Jets drafted the second best defender in the draft and addressed a long term deficiency all at once?
ROFLMAO!!! IMO no sane GM who wants to keep his job would take a player for a problem that doesn't even exist yet over someone who would potentially solve an immediate and glaring need. If one did, he should be fired immediately!!!! I've heard it all now. SMH You're been a Jets fan too long. You're thinking like all those clueless GMs who have filled our history who thought they were smarter than everyone else, but weren't.
People need to let this Leonard Williams thing go - ducking on a pay-day for a great player isn't the way to win in this league. That's why we are having this discussion, because people are actually naive to think we will let Wilkerson go.
