It serves two purposes: mocks them and how far they've fallen, and possibly rids us of champ as they kick his ass for the mockery
Nah, nobody hits an old guy. Old guys can generally say whatever they want without getting hit. Besides--it's San Francisco, champ would probably still kick their asses.
