He must have looked real good in practice this week for them to give him key plays like that and sit Blaylock. If he continues to hold onto the ball he's role is going to grow. Mangini seems to like him as more than a 3rd down back. I think on this team if you produce you play and he produced. More to come.
Except the numbers. CAR YDS AVG TD LG K. Barlow 12 31 2.6 1 8 L. Washington 7 25 3.6 0 7 C. Houston 2 10 5.0 1 5 Houston had two well blocked runs (though he did tough out the TD.) Washingotn was much more significant in the passing attack than the rush. Barlow is the only RB on the active roster with every-down skill.
sure is exciting...reminds me tomlinson  i hope he keeps getting the ball, along with houston and barlow...
I agree that Washington looked very exciting out there today. I'm not sure he could be an every down back, but he is at least a nice third down back (perfect for screens and draws...get this guy in space). It is very hard to evaluate these running backs with the lack of run blocking. Although the blocking was pretty decent in the second half.
I like Leon. But lets be real ..he is a situational back...tho I must admit... like deathbyjets I havent been able to see how we run due to "O"line problems yet to be resolved.I think we are on a rollercoaster till(god willing)...Curtis returns...Iknow...I know....dreams
I think Leon could be very special, and an every down back with the proper o-line. Yes he's a small guy, but he looks like he can take a hit similar to Dunn.
how can you really compare barlows season to houstons so far? "he had 2 well blocked runs"....wtf? he powered his way into the endzone. you say he toughed out the td for the jets, well, IT WAS ONLY HIS SECOND CARRY OF THE GODDAMNED GAME. he didnt get another one after. 2 rushes for 10 yds is 5 per carry. if youre gonna compare to barlow, then cedric outshines him, even though that comparison is stupid since he lacks any real amount of carries. think we all need to see more of houston before anyone can make the assertion that barlow is the only back we have who has "every-down skill".
I just watched the replay on the news. He wasn't even hit until he was at the one, and his momentum carried the front of his body over the goaline because he was hit low. Combine that with his garbage time performances last year, versus Barlow fighting for yards every single time he carries the ball, and I am pretty confident in what I wrote.
Its obvious that we need to see more of houston except in goal line situations to know if he is as good as some here feel. Hopefully we deactivate blaylock and and used the same 3 rb system vs. indy this week. I'm expecting big things out of Leon this week since the jags scat back had a very nice performance yesterday.
I have a friend who's an unabashed FSU homer and has been talking up Washington to me for awhile. I didn't pay much attention because he tends to think everyone that comes out of FSU is great, but Washington really showed something yesterday. Not just the long pass but the 3rd down conversion that got called back on the ineligible receiver downfield, he really made something out of nothing on that play.
Once again, he's not small, he's "Short"......... At 202 pounds, why can't he be an every down back when Warrick Dunn, at 180 lbs, has been effective for nearly 10 years? I said that I would come back on the forum when it mattered, the regular season; well, here I am and it seems like Leon is looking more and more like the truth everyday. Also, I have read someone say that he must have been showing something in practice in order to get a shot yesterday; that's what he does, he pratices like a demon and he gets the coaches attention. It was the same thing with FSU when he had first gotten there and Lorenzo Booker was the #1 player in the country coming out of high school. Most thought that Leon was not even going to play running back! As it turned out, as a true freshman, he made the hyped up Booker red-shirt and the rest as they said is history.
I like this kid a lot as well. He spoke well after the game and reiterated what Trey is talking about, the kid seems to have a great work ethic and attitude, Mangini has to like what he is seeing, Leon can be a better version of Kevin Faulk in our O. I think it is to early to say he could not be an everydown player, although also a little early to say he could be. Either way, he is exciting and I am glad he is in green.
Washington can run in the open field, that's a talent that can't be taught. Same as the kick return in the preseason, he makes plays.
not only that, he hits his holes full speed and doesnt try to tapdance behind the LOS. and if he does get shifty its because he has the vision take advantage of his athleticism. Me,Trey Ko, and another FloridaJetFan have been singing his praise since the draft. Were not proven right yet, as only time will tell. But you other posters who think his top potential is a Kevin Faulk role. your wrong. At worst he will perofrm that role. Now I'm not saying hes the answer. But he will be a playmaker onthis team for YEARS to come.
My comparison to Faulk was not meant as an insult. Faulk argueably played a bigger role in the backfield for the Pats than Antwoin Smith did for a bit. Smith probably had more yards, but Faulk played a huge role, running and receiving. I like the kid, I like that our CS uses his skills and lets him play, and if he continues to impress and work hard he will be given his shot.
I know it was not an insult. Faulk is a good player. So i know you were complimenting him. My point was Jets fans should be even more excited about him. Because I believe he will be doing what Kevin has done AT LEAST.
