Trade Leon for a third rounder. He's a 28 year old running back who is coming off a major leg injury, and his speed is his biggest factor. We have our receiving back in LT now. We have yet another proven kick returner in Brad Smith now. We have our Wildcat player in Smith.
Or he could make things incredibly difficult in that regard and wait to sign his tender. I can't say I want to see him traded for a 4th or lower, but that could just be the fan in me. When it comes to my favorite players, I don't always look at things rationally, although I've tried with Leon.
Im to the point with this guy that if you dont want to be a Jet, then fine we'll win without you... finally we have the leverage of being a good team that every other player in the league would love to play for. Fuck em and his Agent
I think if he waits, we can then screw him over and post a 110% tender value on him compared to his last years salary. Its something like that. He has to sign before a certain date, not sure what the date is though. Im pretty sure I saw it somewhere.
April 15 is the deadline for signing of offer sheets of Restricted Free Agents. Basically, nothing happens to him until he does sign the tender after April 15th. In which case he is either inked for a year at 1.759mil, or the Jets trade his rights away. Edit - dammit, that's what I get for not refreshing the page.
You know I find it hilarious when I hear people say this about Leon, and it is said quite a lot. It is amazing how many fans continue to say, "hey, he was our most explosive/dangerous offensive weapon!"...or something to that extent. But, I have to say that this particular "fact" is more an indictment of how bad the Jets offense was than how good Leon really is. Don't get me wrong, Leon is a very good backup RB/kick returner, but he is by no means an essential part of this football team (YES, you heard or technically "read" me correctly). When someone says to me, "hey player "x" is the best offensive/defensive player we got!"...it doesn't necessarily mean that they are untouchable and essential to the team.
Yeah because Edwards/Holmes/Cotchery/Greene haven't produced more.. Look Washington is a great 3rd down back and that is it....he has got it in his head that he is a potential feature back and he just isn't. The jets got way better on offense the last 12 months ...leon could have been a part of that but his agent has got his ear and that is that unfortunately
Look at it like this. If a salary cap comes back into play...We need contracts for Mangold, DBrick, Harris, Revis, Cromartie, Edwards, Holmes, and Washington...and probably a few others. Yea it would be nice to keep him, but he's pricing himself out of our range and he's going to want to expand his roll. I wanted to keep him going into last season, but he is replaceable. I'd like to get something for him now...if they don't plan to use him extensively next season.
Very valid point. we proved that we can be successful without him, with the guys you have listed im not sure we can be successful without them especially mangold, brick, harris and revis.
The way I see it he has no choice but to sign, what's his option? Holdout..... He can hold out all he wants because if he misses the season by holding out he'll get even less money from somebody else next year. That's almost 2 years away from the game.
I think the Jets and a lot of other teams are relying on the near-guarantee that if there's a new cap in 2011, there will be an adjustment period in which they can work their payrolls under the new CBA. They aren't just going to slam a hard cap down on the entire league.
I'd like him on the team, because I think he can be of value to us, but it's not like we're unsuccessful without him. It doesn't seem like any front offices consider him worth a second round pick, which doesn't surprise me at all, and I'd be incredibly surprised if any would be willing to send a third round pick for him, considering what the Jets got for a fifth rounder and considering he is coming off of a major leg injury. I don't see a problem with having LT and Leon keeping each other fresh during the season, since I don't see people willing to trade for an injured running back with contract issues who has never been a primary back.
at this point i'll take that for Leon. I'm so sick and tired of him and Keels that I don't care what happens. Thank You for the service Leon. I'll always remember what you did for the team, but business is business. This is a deep draft. The Jets can go get McCluster and have the same player if they pull off a trade in the draft that includes Leon.
