Please don't start a fire idzick thread. I already can't keep up with my 90 complaints spread out over 12 different posts. Lol
If Idzik had panicked and given DRC a 5 year deal at 7.8M a year he'd be getting crucified right now for not bidding higher on the other "real" CB's that were out there earlier in the process and having his hand forced by a second-tier talent. In fact what he did was completely consistent with the philosophy he showed last year. He apparently offered DRC a 1 year "prove it" deal at an affordable price and then let things fall where they would. There was never a plan in place for the Jets to acquire a veteran CB in free agency this year other than through the bargain basement approach. All the interest we heard about from various sources was likely bullshit. The only guy the Jets had in for a visit was DRC and that was only to see if the bargain basement was there with him, which it obviously was not. None of the big free agent CB's came to NY to visit the Jets. They all went other places first. That's because the Jets didn't call them and say "hey come in and see us we'd like to do a deal." That wasn't the plan.
Word from his camp is that he'd be willing to take a pay cut to facilitate a trade. His big issue is he wants to play for an offense that will properly manage his carries & will let him use his ball skills in open space. Would make alot of sense from the Jets perspective.
Why would Rex cut him some slack??? If this team take a backward turn, it's Rex's head on chopping block not Idzik's. As for rebuilding mode, this franchise has been in rebuilding mode since 1969. I understand everyone's obsession with not being "house-poor",but at the same time, you have the money, put it to use. All I see for Rex is having to rely on players he's not sure about and I'm sure that makes him uneasy. As always I point the finger at both Woody and his hand picked boy, Idzik. Their indecisiveness or "building a consensus" is hurting the team.
Okay, but do you want him to throw our cap space away on the Art Monks of the world or do you want him to get good players? I'm not being facetious either. Just because you sign someone doesn't mean it'll be worth it and we haven't been completely silent. Decker was an important addition and bringing Folk back was smart. Resgining cumby was, erm, well it happened. My one concern was the switch we made on OL which seems like a downgrade to me. However, it is still early. These first signings are always the splashy, high paid prima donnas. IOW, they are the highest risk. I will be interested to see what Idzik doesn't as we go along.
I think most fans are tired of seeing other teams signing players and the Jets seem to be sitting on their hands.
Meanwhile we have Wilkerson, Richardson, and a Milliner that finished off strong last season all through the draft, let it ride and see what happens. If we come up big this draft people will sing a different tune.
Yes, but most fans are stupid and don't know anything about how to construct a SuperBowl caliber football team.
Exactly. Well, I think you can rest assured that Idzik does know what he's doing, although it's definitely possible that he ends up making big mistakes. But the idea that he's totally incompetent, has no clue what he's doing, is not true. His dad was a head coach in the CFL and an assistant coach on a bunch of teams including the Jets, so he had some exposure to that growing up. He played football in high school and college (Dartmouth, but still), and after he graduated he became an assistant coach for low-tier college programs. After 10 years he worked his way up to an assistant job with the Bucs, and about 10 years later he was their Assistant GM. Then he went to the Seahawks, and about 5 years later he became our GM. This is not some random guy whose dad bought the team, he's been in football professionally since he graduated college, and played it from when he was a boy through college. He's legitimately been in football his whole life, and has been at the NFL level for over 20 years working in front offices. He's seen how they work, and clearly he must be an ambitious guy to make it to Assistant GM (which is very difficult to achieve) in just 10 years. You don't get to that level by slacking off. Whether he's good or not, he is a go-getter, this is his life's dream, and he does care. A lot. I can accept people saying that they despise his strategy and think he will be a terrible failure, and that they wish we hired the guy from Pittsburg. But I would need more than third hand rumors to convince me that suddenly this hyper-ambitious guy just slacks off completely during one of the busiest times of a GM's year after aggressively working his way up the ranks for like 25 years. It doesn't make any sense that he'd work so hard for this his whole life, and then immediately stop caring barely a year into the job. He's never led an organization before, but you have to start somewhere. Usually GMs do come from scouting backgrounds, but Idzik does have football knowledge from playing (albeit not at a high level of competition) and coaching, and reportedly he would spend extra hours watching tape and sitting in on coaching meetings trying to learn more. If he'd never worked at a front office before, that'd be a huge concern, but being around the people who run it, eventually you'd get your own sense of how things work and how they should work, what changes you'd make, etc. After about 30 years in front offices, he's no stranger to it, and since he has been an Assistant GM for a long time, I think he can handle the day-to-day stuff of being a GM. Whether one likes his decisions or not, it's not like he just came in with no relevant experience. The "he sets his own hours" comment, it's hard to know what to make of it. He seems to visit colleges frequently, his focus might be more on the draft. He could be a night owl and shift his work schedule to start several hours after everyone else is there, but then he could work hours after they all go home. Setting his own schedule doesn't mean he works fewer hours necessarily. If they'd said "he's never in the office, I've barely seen him" then that would be alarming and concerning. But it doesn't matter that much what hours he keeps as long as he does the work, and one of the perks of being the boss is setting your schedule how you like it. We did alright in free agency last year, we got some decent guys on the cheap. We got a mega trade from the Bucs that netted us a fantastic player. He's different than what we're used to, but I think it's way too soon to declare him to be a terrible disaster or the savior of the franchise.
I think one of the reasons why I'm not happy is because I've been spoiled by the Yankees. If they needed a bat or pitcher, they spent the money to get him. Granted football is a different animal and has a salary cap, but knowing my team would do everything they could to make the team better gave me confidence a championship was possible. With the Jets and their slow and cheap front office, I honest believe it could be years before the franchise wins another Super Bowl.
