Only because the NFL has changed since Mahomes was selected. Without Mahomes, there would be no Kyler Murray #1 pick. If Lawrence came out the same year as Mahomes he would have been viewed as the better prospect. Mahomes worked out but was no slam dunk on draft day... otherwise he would have went #1.
Field is pretty remarkable, I don’t think he’s going to impress physically like Lawrence (who has a howitzer) but he’s a lot like Wilson in how well he moves, sees the field + how damn accurate he is... go watch his throws this past week vs Nebraska... I mean they were all so perfectly hitting his guys in stride... he’s going to be a very, very good pro imo.
If I had the #1 pick, I would have taken Mahomes but I’m crazy like that. The NFL puts too much weight on height at the QB position. A big part of Trevor Lawrence’s appeal is his 6-6 frame.
I don’t have the time anymore to post QB breakdowns on here like I used to but I will also be hitching my wagon to the Fields > Lawrence train. Not trying to be a contrarian, I just really like Fields and have some concerns with Lawrence.
Fields does throw the ball late a lot but I think he’s afforded that luxury because of superb pocket awareness, poise and movement. A lot of people criticize him by saying that he gets elite protection (sometimes valid) but I think he just as often sets up his own protection by navigating traffic extremely well while keeping his eyes downfield to make plays. He’s also extremely accurate, an elite decision maker, and adds a 2nd element as a runner that intrigues me (Lawrence can definitely run, too, I just think Fields adds more here). Fields reminds me a lot of a DeShaun Watson type guy. With Lawrence there’s just too much extrapolating that needs to be done for my liking. He’s got great traits, but he honestly is not asked to as much as you’d think at Clemson (tons of screens, short stuff that just moves the ball for them with ease because they’re the best team in the country and play in the ACC). He also throws the ball directly at an underneath defender at least once a week, and sometimes has clunky feet/a little slow to respond to pressure. With that being said, you can copy and paste this paragraph for Justin Herbert and he’s thriving instantly in the NFL. The only difference is he’s escaping terrible college coaching whereas Lawrence isn’t. But the disparity between what they were asked to do and what they are capable of doing is comparable, as are their physical traits. I think Lawrence can be good if supported properly, but I think Fields has a skill set that can thrive even in a bad situation. And Lord knows which one of those we’ll be.
If you watch Murray, Lamar, Watson and Wilson, I believe Fields could give us a little bit of them. It still a lot of football to be played in college. It too depends on the coach and the style before we make any selection. I think with Fields legs, he provides more weapons offensively. Way to early however to select a QB at this stage of the game. I just don’t think Trevor is a slam dunk.
What do you mean way too early? Are you suggesting that it's too early to think about picking number 1, too early to move on from Sam, or something else?
Yes, the so-called "experts" would have rated Lawrence higher, but not Legler, not ColoradoContrails and not me. The "experts" didn't look at Mahomes seriously. They wrote him off as a typical "Air Raid" system QB. They didn't look at his traits, his talent, what his strengths were, or his poise.
Has anyone else watched Fields this year and has any analysis on him? I haven't seen him play much. I think the Jags are a real threat to beat us out for the #1 pick so I'm wondering how Fields is as a prospect.
I went with Fields in the TDN simulator and got the following picks: 1.Justin Fields QB, Ohio State 26. Rashod Bateman WR, Minnesota 33. Josh Myers IOL, Ohio State 65. Kenneth Gainwell RB, Memphis 89. Jake Ferguson TE, Wisconsin 102. Azeez Ojulari Edge, Michigan 141. Joshua Ross LB, Michigan 142. Marco Wilson CB, Florida 189. Trey Hill IOL, Georgia
To choose a pick between the two potential QBs in the draft or anyone. As far as Darnold, I think he s overrated and feel that we should draft a QB. Whether Darnold is still with the team or starts in 2021, I don’t know but he s not the future.
That’s a bit of a stretch. The experts viewed him as a 1st round talent, with the best arm in the class, they just didn’t know how he would fit into a conventional NFL offense taking snaps under center and reading NFL defenses. He was fortunate to end up on a team and head coach that didn’t make him fit their mold, but instead molded their team around him. A head coach with vision + who knew exactly how to use him. If he went to the Jets, it would be a much different story.
Having no bearing on how good they actually are, it'd be fun to draft Justin Fields because his season of QB1 actually passed muster with my wife for our nightly Netflix viewing earlier in the year. And again, having nothing to do with an actual scouting report, but Fields looked like a man amongst boys in HS, AND had that almost sociopathic personality where he felt nothing at all while taking apart opposing defenses and winning almost everything in site. Enjoyable show.
Gotcha. Well, since we have the number 1 pick as of now, it's worth discussing who the better option is. This is subject to change based on how the rest of the season goes.
I disagree that its a stretch. Mahomes has unbelievable arm talent, generational arm talent, and is a playmaker. He's smart, mobile, poised, and has a burning desire to be the best he can. I believed that he would be a star and big success. He would still be very good, even on the Jets. Some players just have the "it" factor. They can succeed no matter the circumstances. I believe that Mahomes is one of those types of players.
Completely agree with your take on both QBs. The late balls is my biggest concern with Fields. Though not as talented Geno Smith has the same issue. Right reads late trigger. It all falls under Fields’ overall processing which is a bit slow for a top prospect. Even his drops are somewhat methodical for a guys as athletic as he is. At the moment I’m attributing it to the lack of snaps. We’ll see if that’s the case this year.
You guys give me hope. I feel like Jags are done winning any game in the season. And the Jets will win at least 2 just to fuck us the top pick. So it is either Lawrence or Fields for the Jets. I feel better now.
Ryan Clark just said on First Take that when he was coaching at the 7 on 7 Nike opening their senior year, he thought Fields was better. Fields won the event w/ Clark coaching. He still doesn’t buy the Lawrence is better now. Seems like it’s the casuals that’s are fabricating this great separation between the 2.
