I don't care that he is out of position. Any one drafted at that level should be able to do something.... ANYTHING at that position. I am not saying he should be an All-Pro NT, but he should be contributing something to the defense. At this point it should be very clear: DeWayne Robertson is just not a very good football player.
You've been calling him a bust since the day he was drafted. Funny enough in 04 when he was a borderline pro bowler and last year when he had a handful of VERY good games...you were nowhere to be found..
Robertson, whilke I will agree is not a great player at nose tackle, he is good. His job is to take up space and stop the run. One play in yesterday's game he took on two blocks and allowed Hobson to cut around for a sack. The 3-4 is for linebackers to make plays. How many times this year have the Linebackers been stuffed when they blitz? Kerry Rhodes had a sack almost every time he rushed last year. This year he has gotten stuffed every time.
That's not a bust. A bust doesnt start 16 games his rookie year, and start almost every game of his 6 year career. A bust does not fill a long time droughted position for a franchise w/ solid play. Was the pick a dissapointment? perhaps...but not to the point of harping and hating on him everyday for 6 years like you and others have done. Who got selected w/ those 3 traded draft picks? Michael Haynes- Just released by thee jets and is now pursuing a veterinary career Rex Grossman- Enough said Tank Johnson- Enough said.
Are you serious? The Jets would have drafted those EXACT players with those pics? You realize by your standards, Johnny "Lam" Jones was not a bust? He played for FOUR seasons!
Unfortunately Thomas has not been good enough in coverage or at getting ressure on QBs. I don;t know why he was so much better last season, but we probably jumped the gun on the extension. Still, the issue here is that we don;t have ther personnell to run the defence that these coahces are forcing upon the players. A 3-4/4-3 hybrid would work for now....
They may not have taken the exact same players..but within that given draft year...the Bears were taken the BPA type stance. Meaning that the Jets would've taken a similar player at that spot. It's a market survey if you will. As for Jones...Jones did not fill a need like D rob did...and did not contribute as much as D rob has.
Not to pick on you but we do not have the players to run either system. The 4-3 would be just as disasterous. If this is going to be a 3-4 team they might as well grin and bear it because it will be just as awful the other way around.
We certainly have a better chance at running the 4-3. A 4-3 D is a general base defence. We don't have the pass rushing DE that you would ideally have in a 4-3, but we have the LBs for it. When Doug Brien missed those FGs we had the same players starting at LB as we have now. Robertson plays better in a 4-3, so Pouha would just have to be stuck in there as the other lineman. Barton/Harris, Vilma, and Hobson would be fine at LB in a 4-3, and our secondary wouldn't change. So, based on what a 4-3 requires, we have more of a complete defense than we do in the 3-4.
We played total garbage teams in the second half last year. At least the last 6 were. Houston, GB, Buffalo, Minnesota, Miami and Oakland.
Maybe they should grow handlebar mustaches and twist them and they do the mwahaha laugh... plus they should carry their money is white sacks with the $ sign in them... just for dramatic effect...
i'll tell you who's laughing all the way to the bank the owners and front office. the people who support the jets the most are the fans. we also know the least about what things they have done, or could have done to improve this team, but havent. they dont seem to be an organization hungry for sucess, they seem to be enjoying their wine and cheese. i'm not saying we are ready for any patriot like manuvers, but how slow are we headed toward improvement? at the expense of the fans who support this team i might add. this team lives and dies by its fans financially, are we getting our money's worth?
Kurt, they shouldn't even have had to draft a DT that year. When Herm came in and announced he was running the Tampa Cover 2, the first thing they should have done was address the 3T position. Instead they waited a year, then told Shaun Ellis to start eating and drafted Bryan Thomas. All of this for the most important position of the scheme. I do think trading up for Robertson was a mistake, but it's a mistake they had been in the process of making for 3 years.
Ellis was asked to play the 3T in Herm's rookie coaching year. The first round pick that year was Santana Moss. They gave up on Ellis playing the 3T 2 games into that season. The following draft they took BT for really no good reason other than falling in love w/ his workout numbers and giving up on Ellis way too soon after switching him all over the place the prior season. The 3T was left unaddressed that entire time...and on top of that... the interior D-lineman position entirely was a mess. That's why D rob was brought in. In hindsight should we have traded up to # 4 for a DT? Absolutely not...but at least he brought SOME stability to that corps, and for a short time..filled the 3T need.
It is not hindsight--half the people on this board thought DRob and Thomas were stupid picks WHEN MADE. Kurt, you lose your credibility by defending those ridiculous picks and worthless, and that's the word, 2 players.
I do not defend the BT move. The move was garbage than...and is garbage now. D rob however I will defend. That was an absolutely awful draft, and not only did we need a 3T who could provide a pass rush..but we needed ANY DT that was at least solid who wouldnt get blown off the ball on every single play. Many wanted us to stay put w/ the 2 first rounders...and take a DT w/ our first pick. Here's the problem...after D rob, Warren, and Williams...there were William joseph, Jonathan Sullivan and Jimmy Kennedy...all of which were COMPLETE busts. I'm not saying D rob was a great pick at that spot..but at the very least we filled a dire need we had ignored several years prior, and provided some stability. When you factor in how horrid of a draft that was...I have trouble calling him a complete bust or the pick a complete disaster like the BT pick was.
He has done something, he played at a pro bowl level in 2004 and was a key to our top 5 D. He was hurt in 2005 so that contributed to his poor season then he played well all things considered a year ago.
