D looks pretty good.... who is your backup OT though? think we'd have to carry 9 OL's at minimum, and drop 1 RB. also don't think Shaq makes the team, especially with only 5 WR's. I'm watching for Owusu and Graham, as they have a leg up with ST's.
Yeah, I don't see us going into the season with only Brick being able to play LT. We need a swing tackle just in case.
we need a swing T as insurance, as well as competition for Breno (who isn't starter quality imo).. unfortunately i'm not inspired by the competition between Ijalema, Qvale, Wesley Johnson, Hooey, and Brewer..
I recall hearing something on the radio over the winter about some NFL comity 'exploring' increasing the roster. Don't recall by how many or where it went, but they're at least considering it.
7 CBs because of how often nickel and dime will be used. 5 safeties because zero of them are proven. I know it's still a longshot but I could see it happening, especially if guys like Jarrett, Eskridge, and Miles keep making plays. I think you need Antonio Allen because he's the only true FS (unless Eskridge steps up)'and obviously Gilchrist and Pryor are in. 6 CBs actually possible bc Milliner might be on PUP list. As for 5 WRs, I'd actually put in Owusu instead of Evans but if Marshall and Decker and Kerley and Smith all have good Offseasons I see no reason to keep 3-4 guys behind them. WR's like Enunwa, Evans, Graham, Hakim, Posey, and Powell aren't that hard to find if we ever do need insurance.
Enunwa has too much upside, I'd keep him around just based on potential. I haven't seen a WR that shredded since David Boston.
TheBallHawk. Thanks for the effort. Nice job keeping it updated. Besides the never ending issues with our OL, I suspect that the bottom of the roster in areas like RB, WR, TE, LB, Safety and CB as minimum, will be heavily weighted towards players with the added flexibility to be significant contributors in special teams. All else being equal, and injuries non withstanding, they might go up or down one of two players at any given position based on special team contribution. When we get closer to the last 2 cuts it might be interesting to see how does plays out. I also believe we might end up with one or two players not even on our roster yet. It will be an interesting season.
I agree that it's possible, just don't see it as being very likely. IMO just because none of the safeties are proven is not a rationale for keeping 5 and weakening another position. That's why teams have PSs. Allen isn't a FS, so where do you get he's the only true FS? He's a SS. Gilchrist IS a FS. He started out as a CB and switched to FS. He's better in coverage than vs. the run. It's nice to see Eskridge making a few plays, but let's not get carried away. Jarrett is probably pretty safe. I think there will be 4 safeties, Pryor, Gilchrist, Allen and Jarrett. IMO it'll probably be a battle for a PS spot between Eskridge and Miles. IMO Miles is a nice story and a nice kid, but not fast enough to be much of a contributor. Milliner could wind up on the PUP list, but I think that would be a mistake if he's healthy or anywhere near being healthy enough to play. The reason you keep additional WRs behind Marshall, Decker, Kerley, and Smith is that at least in the past, Gailey has used a lot of 4 and 5 WR sets. In addition, Marshall is older and therefore more injury prone (at least theoretically) and may only be with the team for a year or two and it would be nice to have a WR groomed and ready to step in and take his place, and Smith is a rookie. In addition, also because I suspect for the same reasons you would keep Owusu over Evans, STs. I think that you have a point as far as Graham, Powell, Posey and Hakim are concerned, but Enunwa and Evans have good size, and those guys don't grow on trees. The other thing is that even though there may be other WRs available, they won't know the offense or have chemistry built up with the Jets' QBs.
It'll be hard to keep Rontez off the roster. Great story & he makes plays in practice. Should be kept around as the 5th safety, or at the very least on the practice squad.
That O-Line depth. Was expected. Tweaked a few things. Moved Qvale to Guard but I don't see him making it. It's really a crapshoot that will be decided in camp and preseason, who makes it and who doesn't. Qvale, Winters, Colon, Freeman. If the season started today I think our returners would be Kerley (PR), Bilal Powell & Owusu (KR). Maybe TJ Graham if he makes it.
Rumor has it Jets might be interested in Evan Mathis, veteran guard of the Eagles, released today. Keeping my eye on this one.
It's more speculation than anything really, from a couple beat writers. If we were in for a Guard we would have gone after somebody like Blalock who is available, younger & cheaper. He might not be AS good but he was pretty good. We have a bunch of good options at Guard, let's see how that shakes out. No need to "upgrade" with a 1-2 year stopgap guy.
We just picked up OT Charles Brown. Was a starter for the Saints a couple years ago. Depth material at best, if he makes it. EDIT: Didn't realize we already had him in.
there needs to be some tough cuts at CB and WR. just no way around it. Revis, Skrine, Cro, McDougle would be my best guess there then Marhsall, Decker, Kerley, Smith, Owusu at WR cant see us carrying 6 WRs. i can see 5 Corners, certainly not more then that
A coach that ran the most nickel and dime sets in the league last year is going to run with 4 or 5 corners? That would surprise the heck out of me
So 5 WR's and 5 CB's.. do you plan on having 15 lineman or what? There will be at least 6 WR's and at least 6 CB's unless we go with 5 safeties they are both locks. It's hard to find a team who only carries 5 at one of those positions let alone both. Not to mention they quality depth we have at both. Also Milliner should be added to that short list.
Cutting Hooey was the entire basis for the beat writers saying the Jets could have interest, they even said it, that the Jets could be making room for Mathis. Then the next day they sign another tackle
Who do we keep instead? That's about 4-5 additional roster spots. You're gonna get rid of a Marcus Williams, Darrin Walls, Enunwa etc. for who? Charles Brown? Jake Heaps? Bohanon? Pace? We're better off with the DB's & receivers. At the very least they're good depth and tremendous special teamers.
