Don't jump to conclusions about Mariota. I saw the entire game, and while everyone else believes we should crown his ass after 1 game - my instinct is to wait until at least 8 games. The #s look great, but the majority of the passing yards were from yards after the catch. He attempted maybe 1 or 2 deep / intermediate passes the entire game. That speaks volumes about TB's pass defense and lack of tackling.

I think he had a good game, but I am not calling him the next Steve Young right this second.

Any chance we could limit posts in this thread to JETS TRANSACTIONS instead of tired and repetitive pissing matches? Every time I see it bumped to the top of the front page, I think we made some roster move, only to find out it's some dip shit argument about how great another team's QB is or isn't. It's annoying as Hell.

Even though I personally don't like Jameis he'll probably be a good NFL Qb. So game one goes to Mariota. As for a career, that's undecided and won't be for a couple of years. But reports are that Mariota was good all thru training camp. The Bucs GM also claimed he was very high on Winston and impressed with him throughout camp, so everybody loves their Qbs (except us).

I'm not putting him on a pedestal. I'm simply being realistic and not letting biases against spread QBs or QBs taken in the 4th round or lower blind me. I have nothing to do with whether he starts or not. I'm sure that Bowles and Mac aren't just going to hand him the starting job. He'll have to earn it.

You're too harsh. He did MUCH better than anyone could have realistically expected this year in preseason. The game is too fast for 95% (or more) of rookies in the NFL. It takes time for them to adjust to the speed of the game. As great a prospect as Williams is, he didn't exactly dominate in his first game. He's still learning and adjusting. You know this, but QB is the hardest position to learn, and it's harder for him, because it's not just a matter of learning the offense and going out there and playing. He has to think about the offense while adjusting to the speed of the game, adjusting to taking snaps from under center, adjusting his footwork, learning to go through his progressions, etc. Petty is smart and a hard worker. He quickly mastered Briles' offense at Baylor and was in total command of it. I expect that he will do the same with Gailey's offense, and he will be a prime competitor for the starting QB position next year.

With regards to Geno, to begin with, we're talking about two different human beings, so we're talking apples and oranges. They have some similarities in that they played in a spread-type offense in college, and some physical talent similarities, but I'm certain that they learn differently, that Petty is more mature than Geno, a better leader than Geno, and may be a harder worker than Geno. That said, I disagree that Geno didn't adjust in 29 starts. He showed improvement last year, and he showed a LOT of improvement in the off season and TC this year. Geno was a round peg trying to be forced into a square hole in MM's offense. He had an idiot for an OC and an idiot for a HC. Neither have ever developed a young QB. MM's play calling didn't help Geno, nor did the porous OL or glaring lack of tools/weapons around Geno.

You can't just stereotype and generalize about people. That should be obvious to you by now.

Jumping to conclusions is the name of the game for most Jet fans. Similarly to how we went from a 7 to 9 win team to a 1-15 team after the first half of preseason game number one.

By far the most reactive fan base of any team I root for.

Who said anything about Steve Young? Come on, guy, you're better than that. I'm not saying he belongs in the HOF already, but he has clearly demonstrated his poise, leadership, accuracy, intelligence, work ethic, talent and that he belongs in the NFL. He's not a bust as bradwaysux tried to claim he would be. You don't have the game he did if you don't have the ability and don't belong in the NFL.

We finally agree about something regarding QBs! LOL I don't see any QB worthy of a high draft pick so far.

Rivers isn't going to shake loose. He signed a long term contract to keep him in SD through the rest of his career. He's going nowhere.

Steve Young is just a comparison I made on Mariota, IF he were to fulfill his potential. I'm not knocking on you for your beliefs, but people here already think he's the greatest QB and that we should've traded the farm after 1 game. Teams will get tape on him and Mariota will need to react and adapt. I am awaiting to see what happens when that occurs. That Tampa Bay Defense was a complete sham.

I just can't put too much stock into 1 game. He might be ready, but I would like to see him face a team that actually tackles. If he struggles, those that said he should see the bench for a little bit will be right.

I didn't think we should have traded the farm for him after one game. I thought that BEFORE, and you know that. You also know that I'm surprised that he's starting now and doing as well as he is. I knew that he was smart and a hard worker, but I honestly thought that he needed to sit for a while. The fact that he hasn't had to shows that he's better than even I thought. He may struggle some as teams adapt, but that's normal. Peyton had a rough rookie season. He clearly showed he had talent, but everything wasn't smooth sailing, and Mariota wasn't thought to be at Peyton's level.

The debate isn't about whether he's ready, it's about his talent, how good he is and whether he belongs, and he has already clearly demonstrated that he does.

Let us not forget that Mark Sanchez played well in his first 3 games, and never materialized into anything.

See, to me the debate was never about his talent, but if he would be ready or not year one. If you throw a QB out there that isn't ready, you are exponentially increasing the risk of having a bust QB. He's come a long way, I still want to see him against a defense that actually tackles. I wanted the Jets to really find an impact player and I think we did that in round 1, so regardless I am happy with how things are going.

I prob don't belong in this particular discussion.

You belong, we were just talking past each other, looking at different aspects. As I said, I'm surprised that he is starting and done as well as he has thus far. I thought it would take longer. He still may struggle, but I think he will eventually prove that he's a top 5-10 QB in the NFL.

There's always room for you in the discussions I have, bro.

Gotta give credit to Whisenhunt the head coach. A coach normally that utilizes the vertical passing game is changing his ways a little bit.

We worked out a QB and two 6'4 receivers. Makes sense now with Decker probably missing 1-2 games.

Renner was good in college prior to a shoulder injury ending his career. He was dynamic for a little while at UNC and I remember analysts talking him up as 1st-round potential as a sophomore and junior. Wonder if the shoulder injury screwed him up

Just looked him up. He had 2 great preseason games this year with the Ravens. And 2 not so great ones. Haven't seen him in college though.
