Interesting. I think TE will be a surprise battle in camp. I agree we need Kellen Davis or a true blocker - think Sudfeld and Cumberland will battle it out with the former winning

I feel like 4 DEs could be cutting it a little tight, no? I'd rather remove Stacy and carry one more end.

Also, what's your feeling on Walls? I think he was overmatched against ones like Sammy Watkins but he is an NFL caliber 2/3 for sure and would hate to lose him given how cheap be is. Doesn't have the Athleticsm to fight for jump balls but he is always in position

2 games in 10 years? Are you serious?

And when exactly did Freeman play guard here?

If these 2 are very close, cutting Cumby saves 2 million on the cap which could be spent next year etc. Personally, I would cut them both. Sudfeld's imitation of wearing gravity boots in the GB game when he should have knocked down a ball lingers with me. Doesn't get open in the endzone in short yardage either. I'll go with 2 blocking TE's and Amaro.

A couple of the guys on the list aren't on the roster, just had rookie minicamp tryouts. I'm guessing 2-3 PS spots will be filled from guys on other rosters and maybe 1 active roster spot as well. Stacy, Graham, Davis, Reilly, Pace, Babin, Walls, Miles, Posey all fighting for the final spots.

I'd be surprised if Sudfeld beats out Cumberland, but wouldn't hate it if he did.

I don't see 4 DEs as light, especially when your base defense is a 3-4. Coples can always play at DE as well. They may agree with you and keep 5. If they do, and have one less RB, I agree that Stacy should be the one to go, unless Ridley isn't fully recuperated.

I like Walls and think he's good depth, I just think it's a numbers thing. I don't think they can keep more than 6 CBs. I've thought for years that a 53-man roster was too small for today's NFL. I think rosters should be at least 55, and 60 would be better. Milliner may be placed on the PUP list, but I hope they don't do that. That gives him less chance to develop and for the team to see what he can do. Marcus Williams showed a lot of potential last year. He's younger and cheaper than Walls, and may have the potential to be better. If Bowles doesn't agree and keeps Walls over Williams, I won't have a problem with that.

Unfortunately, I think a lot of good players are going to wind up being cut. That's a nice problem to finally have.

Just because he only missed 2 games in 1o years doesn't mean he couldn't miss 6 this year. If you saw those 2 games, you'd know what a clusterfuck it was and how it risked the QB's life and totally screwed the offense. You don't go into a season without a quality backup at Center in the name of keeping some 5th stringer at another position. That's stupid imo.

Freeman played OG at Clemson, and he also played some OG in TC and I think maybe preseason last year or the year before.

Mangold is going to be here for the rest of his career, and Centers rarely, if ever get hurt, doesn't matter how old they are. You look around the league and the best/most durable Centers are over 30, almost 35. They don't get hurt. And Freeman hasn't taken any reps at Guard, he hasn't played Guard here, he wasn't tried at Guard during OTA's. All signs point towards him being a goner. At 6'5, 290 pounds he doesn't exactly have perfect size to play Guard either. Especially if you look at the mammoth type Guards Bowles/Chan have brought in, the guys we drafted. They're all around 330 pounds. If that was Bowles plan, to keep Freeman around, he wouldn't try other guys at his spot. That just makes no sense. It's a waste of time and snaps.

You're wrong about Freeman. I specifically remember him working at guard with the Jets. It may have been during his rookie season, but I remember it.

If he's gone, fine. My disagreement wasn't so much about Freeman, as it was about not needing a quality backup center. The other thing about Freeman you obviously dismiss is that he's also a quality LS, or at least was at Clemson. Still, if he's only 290 now, that's a little light in the pants for the DLs the Jets will face in the AFC East. I'm hoping that Dozier beats out Aboushi for the other starting OG position, but if not, having him as a backup RT, OG and C would be great. I just want to see the Jets get something out of him.

Well, I'm not just saying let's get through the season with 1 Center on the roster. All this is obviously just based on Winters or Dozier being able to play Center, start there if need be. It's pretty common in the NFL actually, I think most teams don't have a quality veteran backup Center. It's mostly some young late round pick. The Seahawks lost Unger, they moved a young Guard over to Center to take over. The Chiefs lost their star Center, now they have some nobody who in 3 years has never been active taking over for him. I agree with you that Freeman is a good player, I loved what he showed us last season in that one game. I think if he gets a shot somewhere he could be a starter, a good starting C in the NFL. But with Mangold it just won't happen here. So what are our options? Do you just have him on the roster and not use him? It wouldn't be fair to him to hold him back and it wouldn't be fair to the other players who lose a chance to make this team and contribute. If other teams would be smart enough to realize the potential he has I'd say trade him somewhere but I doubt that'll happen.

Dalton Freeman is a much better option than Brian Winters. If he could probably start for another NFL team ^^ what sense would it make to let him go? If Dozier or Winters can play center and are better than Freeman then sure you can let him go but from what we've seen they are not.

I'm interested to see the OLB battle. Coples/Mauldin are in while Reilly/IK compete as the young guys and Pace/Babin compete as the old guys. Highly doubt we take 6 even though Coples is a hybrid DE/OLB. The more nickel/4-3 looks will also make it easier to only carry 3 MLB's.

Thanks for this, I just fixed it. OT Antonio Johnson I guess was a tryout maybe, they cut him loose a couple weeks ago I guess.

Freeman definitely has worked at G in past camps.

i know he was only around 290 coming out of school.
but this is his third season here, with offseason weight training, etc.. would be interested to know what his current weight is. under 300 certainly wouldn't cut it in this division, even with zone blocking.

But I already said why it makes no sense to keep a backup with no trade value on your roster if he won't suit up for games, no matter how much upside he has. That's just the situation right now, it's not what I want. Bowles is trying other guys at backup Center that can play multiple positions, something Freeman can't. He's a natural Center. If he could play Guard at the same level as Winters can play Center then by all means, get rid of Winters. But from the reports we just have to assume that Winters might be able to play Center in case of emergency, and that Freeman can't play Guard. Otherwise Bowles would have tried him there. I'd be stoked if Freeman could stick around, but unless he somehow pitches in at Guard I don't see it.

As for IK I have really hopes for him. Hopefully he can lock down the starting job opposite Coples.

It's been said like ten times in this thread that Freeman has played guard and even tackle in practice for the Jets. He was one of the best "guards" in the nation coming out of high school. He wouldn't be asked to play 16 games at guard he doesn't have the body to do that but he could definitely finish a game at that position. Winters is the one who needs to prove he can play center because he sucks at the position he is suppose to be good at.

I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but just because you said it doesn't make it so or even if it is, that others have to agree with you.

That said, I agree that it's better that the Jets have backup OL who can play more than one position. With Freeman only weighing 291, then he's almost too light for center, much less OG.

Now there are a poster or two here who argued that OGs don't have to weigh 340 pounds, and that the Jets' blocking schemes calls for and they'd rather have a lighter OG who can move quicker, pull, and get to the 2nd level to block. I don't know if Freeman can do that or not. Maybe Freeman doesn't look that good at OG, doesn't move that well, or Bowles wants bigger OGs. If any of those things are true, then the Jets should seek to trade him, and if there's no one interested, then he should be cut. I do agree that he has talent and the potential to start somewhere. I had initially hoped that he would be the Jets backup center and take over long-snapping duties for Purdum and thus save the Jets a roster spot. It doesn't look like that's gonna happen, however, and if Freeman can't play OG for whatever reason, then the Jets should move on.

Yeah, it would be nice if Ik or another Idzik draft pick or two would actually develop and wind up helping the team. I don't care about Idzik, but I care about what's best for the Jets, and that would be if all the rest of his draft picks develop and help the team either by playing roles or the Jets trading them to other teams and getting players who can help or draft picks in return. It would also be nice to have some young players at OLB who can contribute at a high level and enable the Jets to get rid of gray beards like Pace and Babin.

DoubleDecker asked me what sense it makes (pointing out what I said earlier) and then I explained it again from my viewpoint, that's all. From my viewpoint it makes no sense. It's not a fact, that's the great thing, we can discuss this, everybody has a different take on it. That's all. We'll see how it shakes out. Tough decisions will have to be made and I'm glad Bowles doesn't let any stone unturned. He really moves everybody around to get to know every single player, their strengths, their value, what they bring to the table and so on. I don't see Rex doing that with the Bills. He pretty much just lines up everybody at the spot they're used to playing. Not a shot at him, but Bowles approaches it a different and IMO better way. In our final OTA session he was moving guards around like crazy, I'm not sure if he tried Freeman at Guard, I think so.

PFF Depth Chart grades. Can't say I agree with a lot of their ratings. How are Colon and Aboushi on the same level? How is Carp not better than Colon? How is Brewer on the same level as Breno? Babin is "good"? Wilk should be elite if Sheldon is. Harris and Mays are on the same level? What a bunch of clowns. Does anybody actually pay for this crap?

Thanks for posting the PFF ratings. I agree. Some posters swear by their metrics and stats as if they're the Holy Grail or something. I think many of their ratings are full of crap in general, but also these charts. How is Marshall not a high quality WR? David Harris isn't good in coverage, and he's slow, but he's not below average. He's at least average, if not good. Douzable isn't below average. He has been a great backup and rotational player for the Jets. He's at least average. I think Skrine is also at least average, if not good.

Jason Babin as "good" literally kills this chart's credibility.

IK stepping up is something I'm looking forward to as well

    I appreciate the QB ratings--GS/POOR; RF/AVERAGE
