I think we'd probably have to pay him closer to 5 mil. or even more for him to play for us. He wasn't going to take our offer over the Broncos or other playoff teams and I don't think Bowles/Macc thought he was worth it, to pay somebody 5 mil. to take Colon's spot. At least that's what they were hinting. That Willie Colon leverage.
Dom Cosentino's latest roster prediction looks like this: http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/08/jets_53-man_roster_prediction_what_to_do_with_dee.html It's interesting. He has the Jets keeping 4 QBs. I don't see that because if they do then Matt Flynn's contract would be guaranteed for the whole season. I think he gets cut, then re-signed after the first game. He has 4 RBs with Bohanon making the team and Ridley going on the PUP list. I would agree with that. He has them keeping 7 WRs: Marshall, Decker, Kerley, Owusu, Devin Smith, Enunwa and Posey. I agree with that unless the Jets think Graham or Powell are better on STs. There are no surprises with the TEs (3). He has them keeping 9 OL, but in a bit of a surprise, he has them keeping Wesley Johnson at center and Harrison, and cutting Qvale and Aboushi. I can definitely see Johnson. He's been getting most of the 2nd team center reps. I can understand keeping Harrison if they think he has a lot of potential and they'd lose him if they tried to pass him through waivers. I will be surprised if they don't wind up losing Qvale and Aboushi, but maybe they don't think they're losing much, and are probably right. He has them keeping only 5 DL and I disagree with that. He has them keeping Williams, Wilkerson, Harrison, TJ Barnes and Douzable. That leaves only Douzable as depth at DE and will mean a very limited rotation. With Wilkerson having been injured for most of camp and Richardson not due back until after the 4th game, I think they keep Bowen or Vickerson (if he's healthy). I'll be shocked if they don't keep 6 DL. Keeping 5 would also pretty much rule out playing any 4-man fronts unless they moved Coples up. He has them keeping 8 LBs (3 ILBs and 5 OLBS), with Mays and Henderson the most notable cuts. He says that Henderson has a shot. I would think that Mays does too. Both are pretty good, and both likely to get nabbed by another team. Neither are PS eligible. I think those two cuts could hurt the most, but Lattimore deserves to make the team. The problem is that with both Pace and Mauldin injured, they need to keep an extra OLB. Reilly has pretty much earned a spot on the team and Babin has had a good camp. I wish the roster was 55 players and the Jets could keep 10 LBs. Barring that, I wish there was a way the Jets could cut both Pace and Babin, but at this point, don't see that happening. He has them keeping 4 Safeties and 6 CBs, with Walls being a surprise cut and Dashaun Phillips making the team along with Marcus Williams. Is Phillips that good? I don't remember hearing very much positive about him. Walls has had a good camp and they've experimented with him at S, but maybe that was to see if he could play safety so they could find a way to keep him.
My first update since June 2nd.. surprisingly, only 4 changes on offense, and 4 changes on defense since then (in italics)....almost all of which were injury or suspension related. i can't see us carrying 4 QB's, or a FB. toughest cut was Qvale, but he had a terrible game against Atl, and i wanted to carry 7 WR's. kept on both Phillips and Arenas as DBs primarily for their special teams, while cutting Walls and putting Milliner on PUP. our TE's suck... Offense Quarterbacks (3) 1. Ryan Fitzpatrick 2. Geno Smith 3. Bryce Petty Running Backs (3) 1. Chris Ivory 2. Bilal Powell 3. Zac Stacy Wide Receivers (7) 1. Eric Decker 2. Brandon Marshall 3. Jeremy Kerley 4. Devin Smith 5. Chris Owusu 6. TJ Graham 7. Quincy Enunwa Tight Ends (3) 1. Kellen Davis 2. Jace Amaro 3. Jeff Cumberland Offensive Lineman (9) 1. D'Brickashaw Ferguson 2. James Carpenter 3. Nick Mangold 4. Willie Colon 5. Breno Giacomini 6. Brian Winters 7. Wesley Johnson 8. Jarvis Harrison 9. Ben Ijalana Defense Defensive Lineman (5) 1. Muhammad Wilkerson 2. Leonard Williams 3. Leger Douzable 4. Damon Harrison 5. T.J. Barnes Linebackers (9) 1. Quinton Coples 2. Calvin Pace 3. Lorenzo Mauldin 4. David Harris 5. Demario Davis 6. Jamari Lattimore 7. Joe Mays 8. Jason Babin 9. Trevor Reilly Cornerbacks (6) 1. Darrelle Revis 2. Antonio Cromartie 3. Buster Skrine 4. Marcus Williams 5. Dexter McDougle 6. Dashaun Phillips Safeties (5) 1. Dee Miliner (CB) 2. Steven Ridley (RB) Suspension (1) 1. Sheldon Richardson
Joe Mays is great on special teams and the only decent thumper outside of David Harris. None of the other linebackers can play Harris' role. He's a lock IMO. Phillips hasn't really done anything, the one time Bowles mentioned him it was to point out an injury. There's no way he makes it over Walls. Maybe if they want to really save some money because Walls makes over 1 mil. I believe. But he's easily better than Phillips, it's not worth it. I still think we'll pick up a veteran OLB and TE for depth. Willie Young is a name to keep an eye on. Had 10 sacks last year, is on the roster bubble with the Bears. If he gets cut we should be dragging him over here, he's one of the best edge rushers who doesn't have a big name yet. I'd even trade a late round pick to the Bears for him.
i usually love to bash these beat reporters, but his predictions aren't too far off from mine. you nailed it with needing at least a 55 man roster, and/or a way to protect some PS players. 53 hasn't cut it for some time. i agreed with his Oline, although Qvale is one of the guys i'd keep if we had 55. i'm fine with 5 DL, as Coples can play DL, and Richardson will be back at some point. i also think Snacks can play some 5tech if need be. we went 5 last year too. Mays has earned a spot on this team imo. agree Reilly and Babin are making it now due to injuries. i'm not crazy about either in a base D look tho. Phillips i added as a placeholder to contribute on specials until Milliner is ready to come back. i cut Walls in favor of Arenas, as we need a returner, and Arenas can play CB or FS, and already knows the system. i think he has more value than Walls for this team.
thing i like most about Mays is he can play either ILB position, and has been doing so in the preseason. i feel like Henderson and Jones can thump, but not much else...which is why i'd keep Mays over them. definitely agree about snagging a TE from other teams cuts.
It will be interesting to see what happens this week if Qvale has a bounce back game against the Midgets. I didn't realize that we only carried 5 DL last season. I agree regarding Mays. I like Reilly and am rooting for him. I'd rather he make the team than Babin. I think he offers more long term and has more positional flexibility. Plus he has a young daughter that has had kidney cancer and he needs the money. I understand about keeping Arenas. I thought he was a good addition, and am inclined to agree with you. Is Phillips that good on ST? I just don't know that much about him.
Henderson will be out a couple more weeks I believe and I don't really think he's good enough to be honest. Him being out doesn't help. Mays has definitely outplayed him so far IMO. Jones has the skills but I haven't heard his name once throughout camp or even in preseason, he's like at the bottom, behind the rest of the ILB's.
If the Jets do sign a TE that's a camp cut, who goes? David had a horrible game last week, but he's a proven vet and the best blocking TE they have. I'd be inclined to keep him and cut Cumberland unless the TE they sign is more of a blocker than receiver.
my inclination is to cut Cumberland. i actually didn't have him making the 53 in my June prediction. he's not worth his salary. problem though now that Amaro is hurt, i think we have to kick out Cumberland to that H-back role. so if we pick up an H-back or 2way TE, then cut Cumby. If we pick up a blocking specialist, then cut Davis. i was hoping Maneri would be that blocking specialist. played well against Atl, but already released. Lynch and that other guy we just picked up are long shots at best, and i haven't heard much out of Saxton. we'll be digging thru the scrap heap for sure.
Worse than that, Mathis said he turned down an offer of what he was making with the Eagles (from some un-named team) to play with Denver.
he took a discount with Denver that he was not willing to take anywhere else. would have cost us around 5.5M, and he's more effective in a zone blocking scheme. i honestly don't think he'd be that much of an upgrade over Colon in our offense, and it's a stop gap either way. would rather take that 5M, and apply it towards Wilk.
Interesting. Bowles just said Reilly would start this week. He's probably ahead of Babin on the depth chart at this point. Owusu was a full go today, Mo worked with the starters. So far so good.
I like his prediction a hell of a lot more than Ciminis. Cimini has them cutting Owusu and Posey at WR? He has them keeping 7! CBs with only 3! Safeties. He also has Winters making the team for 9 OL and 9 LBs but not Henderson. http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/53472/new-york-jets-updated-53-man-roster-projection I'm sorry but if they cut Owusu after the camp he has had that will put a bad taste in my mouth. That kid has earned his spot. We've had far too much decision making based on people not earning their spots in recent years and I was hoping that would change.I also bet they will look long and hard at some of the cuts around the league for TEs, possibly Safeties and backup OL. Both guys though have the Jets just taking a chainsaw to virtually all of Idzik's 2 draft classes. If their predictions come true were looking at the following: Cimini prediction 10 out of the Idzik 19 left... 3 Hurt, 1 suspended = 7/19 on opening day roster after just 2 years. Cosentino prediction 9 out of the Idzik 19 left.... 3 hurt, 1 suspended = 6/19 on opening day roster after just 2 years.
opening day roster, and Pryor will be only Idzik pick who will be starting.......and even that is not a lock. glad he's gone so there is no pressure to keep his bad picks. maybe there won't be any more posters claiming we need to wait another 5 years before we can begin judging his drafts too.
True but we have zero depth at guard. If we had signed him Colon would have been a quality backup. Now we would have to rely on Winters / Aboushi / other scrub.
I don't get it. I saw the link for Cimini's projections earlier today, but when I clicked on the link it didn't take me to the article, but rather to some shopping site. When I just clicked on the link you have, it took me to the same shopping site as earlier today.
