I don't buy the bunk about Sparano being Rex's choice, although I'm not exactly sure he would have made the correct choice at OC. Parcells told the media that he was the one that advised Tanny to try to get the Sparano/Haley package, and it's no secret that Tanny was a Parcells piss boy. When Haley went to Pitt, the Jets had basically sat on their hands for a month or so trying to get it done and most of the candidates available had gone to other teams, so they settled for just Sparano. Even during the conference call with the press, the normally effusive praise-doling Rex sounded like he was reading from a script, and was mostly monotone. You can blame Rex for a lot of things, but I never bought that line of BS about him being the one that hired Sparano. Woody's Jets have a history of not allowing HCs to make their own hires. Herm with Cottrell and Hackett, Mangini with Schotty (another Parcells advice hire), Rex with Schotty. It is maddening.
Byz, if you're theory is correct, that does not bode well for any well known HC candidate ever taking this job seriously. Why would any successful HC take this job knowing what comes with it? That $20mil Idzik rat holed won't mean shit to any coach concerned with his legacy.
Yep. It's a trend that you can only attribute to Woody at this point, all of the musicians have changed but the song remains the same. And it's why this team has only been able to interest rookie HCs since the day Charlie Brown bought the team.
