I kind of wish our coaching staff had thought to make things simple for the rookie at the start. The most complicated position in sport, and they threw it all at him. I mean, what the actual fuck?
FWIW, I completely agree on the substance -- that being that Saleh, being a rookie defensive HC, was/is in a bad position to groom a rookie QB, even more so w/o a plan (i.e., a starting caliber caretaker QB in place). Just wanted to note that in the article, it seems like it wasn't even Saleh who figured out how to streamline things, but LaFleur...
yeah…at the time, I liked Saleh as a good long term hire but was leaning more towards Daboll as an offensive coach who had already proven he knew how to groom a raw but talented rookie QB in Josh Allen. We’ll see how he does now at the Giants, but in any case that ship has sailed. Maybe JD felt that Saleh was more aligned with his vision or that they could work together better…certainly seems like the last two drafts have been very good which indicates not only a good eye for talent and a good strategy on how to draft by the GM, but also indicates that the GM and HC are aligned on the types of players they want. And it’s clear that the players drafted by JD for Gase are not really great fits for Saleh’s team…
Let's not forget the tragic death of Knapp. That is what really happened. He had a proven track record of grooming QBs and was the only one in the room with real experience with a rookie QB. That is no longer an excuse let's see what happens this year.
Maybe, but like you said, the entire offense was learning a new system and the team didn't have much to lose. There was no chance of them making the playoffs, with or without Wilson starting. Compare this to Mahomes' 1st year, when the Chiefs had an established system and an experienced and talented team. The Chiefs didn't want a rookie QB to ruin their season and they had the luxury of starting Alex Smith, who did a great job of running that offense. So Mahomes was able to sit on the bench and learn.
