This is not really a positivie for Chad, but a negative for the franchise. The fact that your statement is remotely true is downright depressing. Chad will NOT win a superbowl as a starter, ever. I would take 2000 Dilfer over him. Hell, I'd take 2000 Dilfer over Clemens right now. The difference is that we don't know what we have in Clemens. It's his 3rd year in the league, so he doesn't need a bench buddy to teach him how to read defences (i.e. throw to the CB open for a TD in the 4th quarter) or horribly bad throwing mechanics. Thank you for 2002 Chad, but you've been killing me ever since. Go compete with Croyle in KC, please. With he moves we made so far this offseason, we're giving ourselves a ~3 year window to make something happen. After that we're replacing guys like Ellis and Faneca, and lord only knows who else. If we start Chad this season we lose one of those 3 years. If Clemens isn't the answer after that, we're down to 1 year and starting a rookie or journeyman vet. Could we pull a 2000Ravens at that point? Maybe, but do we really want to bank on it? Trade Chad. Sign a vet backup for Clemens (anyone, even Carr), and draft a guy like Flacco for clipboard duties. If Clemens doesn't work out it's the Flacco show in 2009.
The problem with that machine that throws balls to you quickly is that the ball always comes out with the same attitude -- in line. If you are used to catching the ball in line and it comes in point down, surprise, surprise!
Seeing as how there is a 50/50 chance at worst that Chad starts next season,if he does i'm gonna make a thread where you have to repent.
Which is what i mean. Even in '04 when the running game was great and fun to watch, certain games were very bland and the defense was what kept us from getting killed in some games. That may be credited to the playcalling but no one really knows
I think we have the potential to be very similar to '04, but we won't beat the elite teams without a threat of a big play from our passing game.
If you don't have two QBs with at least a season in the BS offense, you are hamstrung when the starter goes down. We need a "two-headed" QB situation in order to put the peddle to the metal and run the BS offense down the competition's throats. "You want this, then here's that. You're looking for here, but then there's there." There is nothing I think that is more upsetting and discouraging for a defense than to think a play is left and it comes right and blows you up for a 30 yard gain ...unless it goes all the way to the house. Especially if that knowledge doesn't do you a damned bit of good on the next play. This is the advantage, I think of the BS offense run right with a proper OL.
Yes he does, but the team he played for (and didn't sabotage) was the ones who gave it to him. In his SB he played not to lose the game.
With all the new news going around, how in the hell did we warrant having a new Chad Pennington thread every other thread in this forum. Why does everyone insist on having their own love/hate thread on #10? So we have some semblance of an Off Line forming. There is still a lot of offseason to live through before we pick up this tired old topic.
Yes, then there is the draft coming up. And there's no doubt about it -- we need some speed. We need more speed. We need it badly. More speed. Outside speed. Defensive speed. But more. Speed.
If I remember correctly, this was the Herm Edwards' "I play defense; the offense plays not to lose the game." philosophy, no?
Can't argue here. I do have a bit more confidence in what i think Chad is capable of,but I am convinced personally that Clemens is not the guy. You are right on with that 3 year window. Maybe we need to draft a QB high and solidify that spot for the future. It really sucks that we have spent so much(great moves) in FA,but have a huge question at the most important spot on the field.
Maybe there are devil's advocates out there about Herm too. However, I think it is accurate to say that Mangini and his CS had little or nothing to to do with the Herm Edwards' philosophy or era. We're talking about the 08 roster playing in 08. If the walls at Hoffstra had a vote, then maybe all this history would be helpful. However, The current regime is playing out its own destiny, not Herm Edwards', or Walt Michaels', or Joe Namath's. I think what this 08 gang is doing is terrific. And if they decide to have a competition (as they say they have) to pick one QB over the other, then I say, great. More power to the winner. We can be frustrated and we can gnash our teeth. But at least the NYJ have found a way for us all to have fun the off-season. Just think: We are all heated up and it's freaking March, for crying out loud...! Should be fun... and it is.
Ok so the plan is to go for it. Even with the signings we are still not better than the Patriots, Chargers, Jaguars, Steelers, Colts and Browns! Those are five teams that would prob beat us in Jan with Chad at the helm. Three defenses that would let him dink and dunk the clock away as we lost yet another game 20-6! If we are going to go for it then go for it with Clemens. He might be the real deal. After 6 years Chad has proven he done!
