I might be inclined to agree...IF he was a year away from Free Agency. He's in the third year of a 6 year deal. With ZERO leverage...What does sitting out even accomplish at this point?
Five reasons why Mevi$ is not going to get what he wants: 1. Mevi$ is listening to his uncle and agent and not thinking for himself. The defense the Jets run did as much for him and he did for it. 2. The Jets have a history of not redoing contracts or giving extension and proof is everywhere. Just ask are many departed and current group of Harris, Mangold, Edwards, Holms.... 3. Mevi$ wants too much money and is using Aso and the Raiders as his benchmark. No one used the Raiders as a good example of who to run a team. 4. We traded for Alcrotraz who is the 3rd best cover corner in the league. If the Chargers had not changed it's defense two years ago he would probably be ranked #2 if not #1. 5. We drafted Kyle "My Names On The Ball" Wilson...Yep trying to find a good nickname for him, but after he gets seven Ints which is more the Mevi$ had last year this name will work just fine.
It's people like you who know nothing about football. I would rather see Mevi$ sit out the whole year and for the Jets to resign Mangold, Harris, Holmes and Edwards. They showed up and are fulfilling their contracts, they deserve the love not Mevi$.
It will be interesting to see if we wind up calling it VERY STUPID. I can see the Jets being willing to not deal w/him and not set a bad precedent here. Mevis may not want to realize it, but he could wind up not playing and not getting paid. I can't blame the Jets for exercising their rights and sending a message that they are not going to be Fckd with by neil f'ng schwartz from quinnipiac college. F neil. If he chooses to want to play games, then his client can sit out for the season racking fines and not getting paid.
but but but but but.....he's still got 3 years left on a contract he should be honoring. </AbdulSalam>
That's where the bad agents and Sean Gilbert and Ty Law come in. He may be the Jets' best player, but with Schwartz and Feinsod and Gilbert and Law all in the guy's ear, why on Earth would Tannenbaum approach him in JANUARY to rip up his deal? They KNEW all of this. They've dealt with his agents over and over again, and it is always ugly. The Jets could have played it cool, told Revis that they had Harris and Mangold and Brick coming up and told him that they planned on sticking with his original deal until the new CBA was in place. That way, if Revis had balked at his current deal and held out, it's black and white who the bad guy is. Instead, you have the Jets telling the guy how good he is and that he's not getting paid enough. In PRESS CONFERENCES. That his AGENTS ARE WATCHING. And when he wants to be paid as well as they players they tell him he's better than, they come up with rules and excuses and do as much media politicking as Revis and his agents have. Revis may be in the wrong, but the whole situation was a total clusterfuck on the Jets' end as well.
BINGO ! This has been going on with Revis since January. He obviously is not interested in negotiating a deal in good faith. If he was, the deal would be done. The market and the specific situation pretty clearly dictate what the reasonable financial paramaters are for NYJ & Revis. The fact that 8 mos later they are meeting in a diner w/a redundent term sheet - indicates that Revis has no real intention of fulfilling his contract or bargaining in good faith. I am believing that Revis wants to be traded and he is trying to force the Jets to trade him. He refuses to think that the Jets would simply refuse to trade him. It should be interesting to see what happens.
I'm tired of people thinking they really know what's going on. And Im really tired of this Mevis nickname. Maybe the gayest thing I've ever heard.... actually yes, it is the gayest thing i've ever heard
Not wanting the leagues best defensive player to go into the year, on a one million dollar salary is a good thing. Revis ignoring the fact that they were willing to THROW FREE MONEY at him , in the middle of that deal and then basically whipping out a gun, is a slap in the face to the teams effort to engage in a goodwill effort.... It's part of the organizations interest to promote their properties. It sells tickets, and paraphrenalia..but...at the end of the day, Revis has to rely on the Jets goodwill to get anything, absent hoping Cromartie or Wilson gets hurt. Right now, he's taking hostages and should be seen in that manner.
Revis not too long ago was a rookie, like Wilson is now. That's my perspective now. In no way am I saying he'll be as good as Revis is today, but what if the kid can have a similar rookie year that Revis had? It's not out of the question. Would that be good enough to win a SB, maybe, maybe not. All I know is that when Jenkins went down I thought our season was finished. Somehow, someway with less time to prepare the coaching staff got the most out of guys none of us would've wanted playing instead of Jenkins, and yet we made it to the AFC championship...
Do you have the inside scoop? Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. They are allowed that. The Mevi$ nickname is a very clever take on the situation. Do I wish the guy would just come back to camp and take his money when we give it to him? YES. Do I think he needs to open his eyes and see th writing on the wall? YES. We traded for a corner to play next to him, but this corner is also capable of playing in place of him. We drafted a corner to learn from him, but this corner may just be the guy that makes him expendable. Revis needs to pay attention to the things that are going on in the workplace, and realize the Jets may do just fine without him. I am not saying he needs to be replaced, just saying the Jets are taking the steps needed to proceed without him. I hope it works out, and he gets into camp and plays like the beast he is, but I have to root for the guys that are out there making the plays in practice right now.
Free money? Do you call a contract with ZERO GUARANTEED MONEY to be 'free money'? By all accounts, it's not just Revis that isn't budging on negotiations, so let's stop making the Jets and Tannenbaum out to be victims here. Goodwill??? Fucking goodwill, are you kidding me? This is a billion dollar franchise negotiating an employee contract. And Tannenbaum is a shrewd negotiator who has been known to give the shaft to players. Where was that goodwill when Leon Washington snapped his leg playing on a rookie contract in 2009? If there wasn't anything in it for the Jets, they wouldn't be doing it. Spare me that GOODWILL nonsense. The combination of the zero guaranteed offer and the fact that Revis had a guaranteed egg at the end of his contract in an uncertain CBA situation almost makes me think that Tannenbaum orchestrated this entire mess to get out of paying 20 million guaranteed. Goodwill my ass.
Reworking his 6 year 36 MILLION dollar deal is goodwill. And orchestrating it to get out of the 20 mil? There were only two choices if Mevis came to camp...Pay the 20 Mil exercise, or let him hit Free Agency. Lets face it, had he played out the year, he's looking at 20 mil more in Guaranteed money. He would have averaged 6 mil over 6 on his rookie deal, which is not a slap in the face considering that veteran CB's at the top of their game are averaging around 10. One good year, and that's considered having paid his dues? Ridiculous. All those other players including Aso played out their deals, risked injury etc. At the end of the day...Mevi$ has Zero leverage in this equation, unless someone actually PLAYING gets hurt.
So that Tannenbaum could take Revis's temperature and gauge whether Neil Schwartz was going to act like a douchebag as usual. That enabled Tannenbaum to recalibrate his priorities for the off season and accordingly he landed Cromartie in March 2010 and K Wilson w/the 29th pick in April 2010. As a result the Jets are much better prepared for the season now, than they would have been if Tannenbaum had not acted proactively to assess the situation. Nope, I really like what Tannennaum did here. He tested the waters and realized Revis could likely hold out again for the 2d time in 4 years and he went out and got 2 Corners. As a result the Jets are in a better position. Nobody gives a shit about perceptions about who the bad guy is. Tannenbaum did a fantastic job here. And your point is what? What the Jets have said about Revis is all true - Revis is great and he is worth more than $1Mil a year. everybody knows that. There is no harm at all in acknowledging the truth. If anything it shows that the Jets have been acting in good faith. What are you talking about? What "rules and excuses" are you saying the Jets "came up with". Revis is the one who has chosen not to play football as he promised to do. Revis is the one who needs to fabricate ridiculous excuses for his failure to show up at camp as he is supposed to. This is all up to Revis - he is the person who is holding out. He could report tonight if he wanted to and he could have his agents negotiate a deal for him within the next 12 hours that would make him and his family pretty well set for life. Revis is choosing not to do so - obviously because he thinks he can do better. So talking about rules and excuses that the Jets supposedly came up with totally misses the mark here. The player is under contract and holding out for a deal that has not been made despite 8 months of discussions. Its not about rules and excuses at this point. Most likely its about Revis negotiating like he has far greater leverage here than he actually does. Totally disagree w/you abyzmul. Tannenbaum has done precisely what he needed to do in order to give this team the best chance to win this season despite Revis holding out. We may miss Revis greatly, but we have Cromartie and Wilson two former 1ST Rd draft picks at CB - Thanks to the work of Tannenbaum & Co.
Geez, Hobbes, one good year? Really? That alone almost made an argument with you pointless on this subject.
Revis is not Peyton Manning or Drew Brees...You need multiple cornerbacks on your team, not just one central player. I would love to pay Revis but come on we have 52 other guys that need to be taken care of here as well...This guy is asking for majority of the pie
Do you even think before coming up with this stuff? Plus, if you're going to serialize posts, I'm ignoring most of it. Question: Has anyone worshiping the magnum rod of Lord Tannenbaum The Great Negotiator even bothered to ask themselves: If Tannenbaum is such a great cap and numbers man, how on Earth did he not foresee the dreaded REALLOCATION RULE? How did he allow himself to begin negotiations in January with a player 3 years out who is the best at his position and has enormous schmuck agents and advisers???? THIS YEAR??? Simple. He wanted to move the numbers around. But he only wanted to do it on HIS TERMS. This is a clusterfuck, and anyone who wants to lay the entire blame at the door of Revis should have been born a Dolphins fan, because only they have homersim this strong.
