Well thrown passes put the wideout in position to make yardage and remain healthy, not get smeared by a linebacker and a safety simultaneously.

He wasn't waiting for many passes as receivers always were with Pennington but I would agree that maybe he shouldn't have been the target. The problem is he was the only guy who would always get open. Unfortunately that was usually over the middle and that meant he was going to get killed after the catch. That's just the way it is over the middle and why so few receivers want to run those routes. He wasn't one of them.

No, you have a point with the QB play, all I'm saying is you have to take his size & fearlessness into account...

I agree with you there to a point. Passes thrown over the middle don't necessarily require a player to get blasted after the catch, but we had so few alternatives on 3rd down that he ended up in the middle of the defensive mid-field a lot. My problem with Vinny was that he could never hit WC mid-stride and give him a chance to defend himself those last couple of years, it was always behind him or in position where he had to break his stride or go higher than he needed to to catch it. A bad pass doesn't necessarily take too much time to get there. Vinny threw a lot of hyper-sonic passes way off the mark.
