I did hear the end of a Klecko interview might have been with Kay, where he mentioned Mangini was a douche to him and didn't acknowledge him, which shocked the interviewers, probably Lagreca and Kay. The Jets do a shitty job honoring their old players, a lot of them you never see again. They've tried to do it right in recent years, but that whole group from the 80s and early 90s were basically just forgotten about.
this is a great way to make fans happy http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2009/01/24/eric-mangini-changes-culture-by-removing-mural-of-browns-hall-of/ Eric Mangini Changes Culture by Removing Mural of Browns Legends Posted Jan 24, 2009 1:35PM By Adam Gretz (RSS feed) Filed Under: Browns, NFL Coaching Email Print ShareText SizeAAA If Eric Mangini is trying to win friends and influence people in the greater Cleveland area, he sure has an odd way of doing it. In one of his first orders of business as the Browns new head coach, Mangini has decided to change the culture in Cleveland by ripping down a mural containing Jim Brown, Otto Graham, Lou Groza and Paul Brown. Because nothing says change in culture like removing a tribute to the most important people in franchise history and replacing it with, well, nothing. The mural was located at the team's practice facility in Berea, Ohio, and in its place is a spectacularly bland, plain white wall. Exciting. I'm guessing this is to represent what the Browns have accomplished since the players mentioned above hung up their cleats. Or, perhaps, it represents that Mangini has absolutely lost his mind and is about to get a face full of fist from Jim Brown. What's he going to do next? Change the name of the team to the Cleveland Manginis? In a twisted and bizarre way, it's kind of funny when you think about it, because Mangini is simply following in the footsteps of Bill Belichick, his one-time mentor, who was also rather fond of pissing off the good people of Cleveland during his time there. As Bob Glauber points out, Belichick alienated many former Browns players -- but did he ever tear down a mural of Hall of Famers to replace it with a white wall? -- while also tossing aside fan-favorite Bernie Kosar for Vinny Testaverde. I can't wait to see what Mangini replaces the mural with, assuming he ever does. Even if the Klecko story weren't true, which I don't doubt it is... is there any doubt whatsoever that the Jets made the wrong move by getting rid of "the Genius"?
Mangini got the Browns job for 3 reasons that I can think of based on what we know: 1. He came into a chaotic situation with the Jets and made it better, at least in the short term. 23-25 and a playoff spot when you inherited a 4-12 mess with almost all the old mainstays being shipped out/retiring is not a bad result. 2. The Belichik tree is going to get fruit plucked from it until it is clear that it is an unproductive one. McDaniel in Denver is going to tell us a lot about that. 3. He probably interviews really well with desperate owners trying to revive their franchises. I don't think he has staying power, and I suspect he'll be out of the NFL after the Brown's job, but that's mainly because he's not a defensive genius who can transform a franchise on that side of the field. People forget that the main reason that Belichik survived his early head coaching debacle is because he's one of the smartest people in the NFL. Maybe THE smartest person. Those smarts translated into innovative defensive schemes that kept him alive in the head coaching derby as he recovered slowly under Parcells with the Patriots and Jets. He also had Parcells of course. Now, that's a clearly proven coaching tree with 4 Super Bowl wins to its credit now in 8 seasons.
hmmm... too many negatives in that sentence. The only positive is that "man-dummy" is gone. Long live Rex!
You guys are talking a lot about Klecko the player…Klecko the nice guy. Hello – everyone forget so quick about his acting ability? Blockbusters like Smokey and the Bandit II and The Cannonball Run ring a bell?
Yeah, a couple of Fridays ago, right? Maybe leading up to the Rams game. It was on one of the NY sports stations very recently.
Agreed with not getting the full story. There's always more than one side to a story. We all know that he's done a lot of stupid, douchey things, but it still doesn't give us the right to assume that one guy's take on another guy's take is the full truth of it.
Skepticism about a story told by Klecko himself. coming from a group of guys who thought Kerry Rhodes had insider info about Brandon Marshall or Leon Washinton's contract and would tell everyone on Twitter?
not the one on the make a wish kid, but Klecko slammed Eric on the wfan HOLIDAY BREAK: The Jets were off Thursday for Christmas. The Dolphins practiced, but later than usual. ... In an interview this week on WFAN, Jets great Joe Klecko slammed Mangini. "I think he's lost them," said Klecko, referring to the players. "I don't think he's done a good job with them." ... If the Dolphins beat the Jets, they will tie the 1999 Colts for the biggest one-season turnaround in NFL history - an improvement of 10 games. ... The Dolphins have committed only 12 turnovers. The league record for fewest turnovers in a 16-game season is 14, set by the 1990 Giants, coached by Bill Parcells. nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/2008/12/25/2008-12-25_the_only_thing_dustin_keller_catching_la.html#ixzz0QdTLKWLC The speculation surrounding his job security started long before Sunday. In one news conference last week, Mangini was even asked whether the rumors prevented him from focusing on Christmas with his family. And in a radio interview this week on WFAN, the former Jets star Joe Klecko called for his firing.
I agree I usually say there's three sides to a story. In this case there's Mangin's side , Klecko's side and the truth. Which side these seconhand stories sway to is anyone's guess. I do have to say though, Mangini's willingness to emulate a prick like Bellicheck certainly sets him up for this type of speculation. If this story is true , he's an absolute shithead, I'm hoping for his sake that is was his "hardass" wannabe act with some excusable oversights.
It's interesting - in all this talk about Mangini, nobody's mentioned how he hasn't named a starting QB yet. It's such a bizarre and misguided tactic that would likely not provide any competitive advantage over the Vikings, but would actually give his offense far less chemistry. I feel like he thinks that if he adopts the weird, close-mouthed tactics of Belichick, it automatically makes him a good coach. I have a business trip in Cleveland in a few weeks - I have to ask around about what they think of Mangini.
that fucking douchebag Eric Mangini...someone post this shit on the Cleveland Browns forum, so they can anticipate more douchery like this
I smell b.s. in all Mangini-accusations. Perhaps there was a misunderstanding with the nature of the cancer kid's visit, but there's no way the worst co-star ever in an episode of The Sorpanos asks a dying kid to leave. I don't think Bellichick would have that level of paranoia....on second thought. The Favre story I posted in NFL forum, I don't buy either. I think Mangini and Schotty would adhere to Favre's concerns considering he had as much NFL experience as they did combined (close to reality), especially since Mangini apparently didn't want him in the first place. Favre called the shots if was willing to play or not. With this and the idiotic not naming the starter thing he's brewing in Cleveland, it's not a good week to be Eric Mangini's kids in a Cleveland classroom. However, with all of the negativity and doubt surrounding the '09 Browns, I wouldn't be surprised if they make the playoffs because there is no logic in predictions anyway but always a ton of irony. Flacco and Big Ben could get hurt in tomorrow's opener and it's suddenly a two horse race with Ocho Cinco Inc. and Brady Anderson/Derek Quinn's Dawgs.
Not for nothing, but I doubt Mangini was concerned about the kid. But didn't Klecko's kid play for the Pats? Kelcko does not like Mangini, Mangini knows this. Do you think it is at all possible that to spite Mangini and to hasten his demise that Joe could watch practice and report to his son?
