Coples was arguably one of the best defensive players for the Jets the 2nd half of the season. I just feel this guy will always get this label that he's lazy. Smh.
if Coples had just a little more Klecko to his game, i think he'd take that next step.. it's a little harsh, but fair criticism, coming from a man who has always demanded the upmost of toughness from his teammates.
Wilkerson is a second tier linemen. He is one of the best players in the league at his position and it is a position that is arguably the second most important after quarterback. I want to see him take the final step and bring it every play like Klecko did and like Quinn and Watt do now.
I'm not, as long as Rex has him playing a hybrid OLB/ DE he will not be able to make it to that level we are expecting. Rex should just allow him to play DE/DL and have idzik draft a legit OLB that can take advantage of Coples ability to disrupt the OL. Klecko is wrong about him, If klecko was asked to play out of position every other play his impact would not have been as significant.
And maybe if the jets offense could sustain some drives the defense could actually rest and catch their breath.
Coples played a large majority of his snaps with his hand in the dirt. Aka he plays dline he is just listed as a linebacker. Also are you talking about the same Klecko that is the only player in history to make the probowl for 3 different positions. Coples does exactly what Klecko did back in the day.
You made my point for me, JK played, DT, DE, NT, that's exactly what I said Coples should be allowed to do. Play only on the line. JK was never asked to play OLB, I watched all the jets games last year and Coples was asked at times to fall back into coverage as an OLB, that is not his game and he will never take it to the next level as long as he is asked to take on those type of responsibilities.
Do you really think he is going to say anything against the offense? He as excellent team player and would not do anything to cause a controversy, I can see him making that type of comment as a true leader would. True leaders take the blame and give the credit to others.
LOL! Wow--I guessed I must have missed Coples Pro Bowl appearance; I didn't know he was the second coming of Lawrence Taylor. Joe Klecko must be wrong in his evaluation of Coples, too, which is how someone else started this thread. I am glad that you are apparently monitoring Coples weight, though. I hope I'm wrong about Coples (if the jets keep him) because he appears to me to be an underachiever at this point. I think he belongs on the DL, and I'd like to see more production than just "QB hits," or"sacks taken away from him because they were considered tackes for a loss." He must be the victim of shoddy stats.
So you are saying he secretly was saying im going to start my season prep later because the offense cant stay on the field?
What I'm saying is that his answer showed self deprecation, it may be something he has to work on, but he is not going to say that " even if I train like I'm running a Boston marathon it's not going to help because the offense can't stay on the field and I'm going to be spent anyway" This defense was outstanding for all the time they spent on the field, what does JK want from this guy? My whole point is that the criticism is unwarranted, for Wilk.
Coples isn't a motor guy...plain & simple. So if that's what you wanna get him on..have at it. But I am SO tired of reading people bitching about where Coples is being played on the field. He is the RUSH Linebacker...he's not playing a classic OLB position as seen in either a base 3-4 or 4-3. He likely drops into coverage once or twice a game..which if you pay attention is really no different than any other "DL" in this league w/ the popularity of zone blitzes. Rush linebacker's sole purpose is to rush the QB/Attack the line of scrimmage..the only difference between that & playing a DL spot is Coples is being moved all over the place & especially on the edge where his length/wingspan become a match-up problem for blocking schemes. If you disagree w/ him playing such a role..so be it.But at least understand what the role entails. I haven't seen any examples of this from criticizers. Instead I see people being hypocrites & trying to "fit square pegs into round holes" based on conventional defensive perception which doesn't apply to a Rex Ryan play scheme. The very argument they are trying to counter with to downplay Coples role/impact.Get a clue.
I agree with you in the regard that people think he actually drops back into coverage often. But Coples is better suited for the interior where he can use his quickness to beat guards, he doesn't have the speed to dip around tackles, he played DT in College mainly and was switched to a 4-3 DE his final year where he didn't play very well, he's very solid against the run but he's a guy that can dominate on the interior more so then on the outside.
It's comforting to know that if Idzik fires Rex there's someone more knowledgeable of NFL defenses to take over. I can sleep now.
