Yes, I know you weren't saying that. I didn't mean to say you did. A lot of people say it tho. Also, a lot guys just aren't capable physiologically of burning it every play too. That's not uncommon. But I don't think that's it with him either. Point taken tho. He has that incredible quick explosive power that we see flashes of. If he went after people with bad intent I think we'd see that more. He does'nt have that killer instinct maybe. Klecko was trying to kill people every play...literally He's a bit of an enigma. Like you said, I guess my point is with him is that it's his personality. He's very religious and it seems he's a bit passive maybe...idk, lol
I have no problems with his assessment of Coples. He looks like he's half-assing it all the time, and has been very disappointing.
Compared to his draftees, has he really been all that disappointing? I bet if Coples was asked to do what he does best, he would be tops on this list if not very close. A lot of fans here wanted Melvin Ingram, he has I think 6 career sacks. I wanted Coples, still think he's the more talented guy out of anyone on that list.
Add in the fact that Coples didn't even put up the sack numbers he should have had, based on how disruptive he's been. He's easily the most disruptive player on that list if you go by tackles for loss, QB hits and whatnot. And that's him playing out of position. When he stepped in for Mo as a natural lineman I think he had 2 or 3 sacks in that one game. If used right he can be an All Pro type player. If you have him set the edge all the time or cover people obviously he's not gonna put up the numbers you want him to put up. And with better DB play and better coverage I think his sack numbers will go up this year as well. I'm confident he'll put up double digit sacks this year.
An underrated point that severely limited Coples sack production last year: early in the season Rex was splitting Coples out wide to jam receivers at the line of scrimmage to buy the linemen more time to get to the QB, because he had that little trust in the CBs. He spent a good portion of the snaps outside of the tackle box doing that instead of rushing the passer, and still came up with 6.5 sacks.
That's not exactly a Who's Who of talented pass rushers, if anything it shows that 2012 was a weak class for the position.
Understandable, but I am just talking about that draft in particular. 2010, 2011 were elite classes; 2013 looks to be just as bad if not worse then 2012. Still, has to make you wonder if we ran more 4 man fronts and Coples was in his natural position as a 4-3 DT / 4-3 DE - how many more sacks would he have?
Yea I was going to say, 2013 was even worse in comparison. I do think there's credence in the idea that Rex was using him incorrectly but in the times when he was actually rushing the passer I thought there was much to be desired, hopefully Bowles does a much better job of finding a good role for him in the new scheme.
Yeah, I hope so as well. He's best when he's going after the QB, and getting in the backfield. The less he's put out there in coverage, I think the better off Coples will be. I have a feeling, he will be part of the deciding factor in the Muhammad Wilkerson extension talks.
LMFAO, he knows more about football and how it should be played than all of us put together. His opinions are accurate.
I was very happy we got Coples at the time. I recall Rex ran his pro-day and it seemed like a good move.
DeCastro would've been a great selection, in hindsight would have been the best selection for us. It would be nice if he were on the roster right now, we need help in the interior offensive line BAD.
I didn't like the move to OLB for Coples. He should have stayed at 3-4 DE IMO, he showed flashes at the end of his rookie year, then had to learn a new position and just hasn't looked comfortable.
Coples is just lost in the sauce after Rex changed his position. I can't figure out for the life of me why you would draft a 4-3 end from college knowing you run a 3-4. He couldn't possibly be #1 on our big board that night.. that whole staff and front office was a joke I'm glad they're all gone. Granted, that draft class was trash.
I like it when ex-Jets REAL ex-Jets (not guys who come here to play for a year or two then retire to go work in the media) give their opinion on the team.
