maybe we can pull off what houston just did and give them richardson and wilkerson and his contract for cousins and get a high pick back next year..of course the entire nfl saw how wilkersoin played after getting paid.
to be fair, what talent did he have in washington? crowder and old jackson and an old garcon? a run game that moved RBs around and never found it's starter? I don't think cousins was surrounded by talent in Washington at all
My point is based upon the COST of acquiring him. After you pay that bill, what do you have left to use in upgrading the rest of this swiss cheese team?
Cousins is a decent QB. He's similar to what Drew Brees was in San Diego. Not quite as good but similar. That said, the Saints have won nothing since paying Brees like an all-world QB and it's very unlikely any NFL team is going to succeed by paying Kirk Cousins at that level. That's why the Redskins haven't just re-upped him to a 20M+ a year deal. This is Dan Snyder we're talking about and even he realizes that paying Kirk Cousins top dollar isn't likely to produce anything but heartburn for the team that does it.
dude, drew brees got the saints a SB ring. he is practically jesus in NO. If cousins brings us a ring he can have all the money an crappy years he wants afterwards.
Here's an article laying out a very strong case for Washington to keep him: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...t-to-win-now-kirk-cousins-is-the-only-option/ And yet, they are apparently reluctant to do so. But if they were to give him up, they're going to demand a LOT, and in addition, the Jets wold be then on the hook for a massive salary that would eat up a big chunk of cap space for years. The Jets are nowhere near close to contending even IF Cousins lived up to expectations because they have too many holes, and they would have less ability to fill them after they spend for Cousins. I understand everyone's hunger for our "savior", but this is too big of price to pay for no guarantee.
Brees got the Saints a ring when they were paying him $10M a year. They were a really good team for the last half of that contract including the SB win, They they had to pay him top dollar after 2011 and what has come out of that is 7-9, 11-5, 7-9, 7-9, 7-9. I kid you not, go look it up. If the Jets paid Cousins the deal he wants coming in the door we'd be lucky to go 7-9, 11-5, 7-9, 7-9, 7-9 through 2021.
The same could be said for Eli & Flacco. Get us to the big dance at least once, and all is forgiven. To win, you need a QB, and you need a good stretch of hitting on draft picks. The former is harder to land. Teams go in and out of good draft stretches all the time (except the Jets).
No, to win you need a good QB, AND a decent supporting cast. The Jets fail on this last point, so after paying what Cousins will cost you, how do you upgrade the rest of the team?
Bottom line is this. If you aquire a good QB you can shape a team around them to be a productive winning team. Even a SB winning team. Trying to build a good team and hope that team can hit it's stride the same time you miraculously stumble across a winning QB (Seattle Seahawks) isn't a good strategy. Nor is trying to assemle an elite team and get a mediocre QB to fill the void. (Alex Smith's entire career)
yeah except the records aren't brees fault. he's carried that team, broken records, is a perennial pro bowler, future HOF QB, and probably considered a top 10 QB all time, maybe top 15 at worse. He's never had a defense. The saints offense has always been a top offense with brees there. Do you think brees hasn't earned his money? eli is a perfect example. he is way overpaid and hasn't earned it he made like 21 mil last season and was garbage. and the giants still won 11 games despite his poor play.
7-9 4 times in 5 years. The QB's job is to win games. If you're sucking up cap room like Brees has been you'd better be winning games or you're not doing your job. And that's with all due respect to a great QB who has not been doing the job a great QB should be doing over the last 5 years.
In the first case, how much did not having cap space and good draft picks because of mediocre records prevent the Saints from getting the help Brees needed? That same problem will exist here with Cousins. In the second case, Eli has been able to succeed because the Giants know how build a winning team to support their QBs. Again, the Jets don't have that expertise.
The Giants in a nutshell: 1. Pressure the opponent vertically with the passing game. 2. Protect the QB. 3. Sack the opposing QB. If you can do all three of those things well odds are pretty good you are going to win some games and be in contention for a trophy now and then.
I think it's clear that the franchise tender compensation for Cousins will not get any deal done w. the Jets. But this situation absolutely bares watching. As more & more QBs fall into new gigs...domino's fall...meanwhile Cousins hasn't signed his tender & potential trade suitors move on to their pre draft meetings.. At this stage either they kiss & make up..he signs a long term deal or he is gone. We may see Cousins change his tune to playing in NY...and we may see Washington have to drastically lower their asking price in order to avoid an astronomical distraction.. Don't underestimate Sheldon Richardson as a chip in this matter. Maybe we flip 1sts w. them & its Cousins for Richardson straight up.Yes Cousins will need to be locked up...but we'll still have the firepower to at least partially fix what ails this roster.
On the surface, that's not a bad idea if Washington would do it, which I doubt. In essence this would be like drafting your FQB at #6, and having the #17 pick in addition (assuming Cousins actually becomes the FQB). But that still leaves the question of how you then upgrade around Cousins with amount of cap space he's going to eat up? I would much prefer this over signing Cutler.
Well on the short term..via FA..he WOULDN'T get any help...but we'd still have our 7 draft picks w. potential to trade down & add more. Then a year from now even w. Cousins hefty contract we're looking at least $50-60 mill in cap space to start really building things up?Perhaps a top 5 pick to go along w. it? At the very least...he'd give us a clue on what exactly the type of offense we need to building looks like. Hard to build on O w. any conviction when you have 0 stability or reliability from behind center
The more I think of it, and the more I hear that Cutler may be coming to "save us", I like Cousins more and more.
I have slowly grown to the idea of trying to obtain Kirk. Obviously this all depends on the asking price (which I'm sure is too high for the jets to seriously consider), but I think Kirk is better than he is being given credit on this forum. I absolutely understand the argument that high-money QB contracts can be crippling to a franchise, but that is if you mismanage your team. It goes without saying that you need a QB to be competitive in this league and I believe with Kirk we would have the chance to win a lot of games. This roster is not bare, it has some hope-provoking players. Leonard Williams, Quincy Enunwa, Robby Anderson, Darron Lee, Jordan Jenkins, and others are all solid building blocks. Additionally, I think Wilk is a great player that had a poor last season and Eric Decker is a legitimate player. Maybe this roster does not win a Super Bowl with Kirk, but if we draft and develop talent correctly, it would make us competitive and have a shot in the future. That is all you can ask for in the NFL
I think the dude's pretty solid, so it all really depends on the compensation to determine if he's really worth it.
