By this logic why should we even try to rebuild? No coach,no weapons,no gm, how is a rookie qb going to succeed?
    Bad argument

  3. You see? Right there. that's why i dont want Cousins..

Instead of staying grounded within the rebuild w. a keen eye towards our needs in the draft, Cousins immediately changes our long term view. Suddenly we have no choice but to prioritize OL extremely early to protect him..

OL should absolutely be a priority in the draft as well as FA..but other than QB..I'm not a fan of prioritizing any position in round 1 of the draft solely b.c of associated pressure w. bringing Cousins in.

I highly disagree, he's probably going to go around 10-15 as I continue to read reports. 6 might just be the right spot, a little high but worth the price. I am not taking Barkley over Lamar Jackson if I can't get Lamar later in the mid first. Lamar got more rushing yards then Barkley too lol, oh and he's right behind Rosen in passing yards from this season.

Imagine wanting Josh Allen at 6, and saying drafting Lamar at 6 gets you fired. Imagine that mind-set. Especially when Lamar is the superior QUARTERBACK.

  5. Gotta start somewhere. What better place than the most important, elusive & leadership based in the game?

Once we have the QB...resources can be used to build around him to make the team better,

So you gonna do a 100M investment with no offensive line upgrades? If you draft a QB at 6, you still need to get an offensive line. Jets have the worst starting center in the league. If you put a rookie back there with Wesley Johnson, just go ahead and call him a bust now. Not too sure about the tackles in terms of the run game and pass-protection. Am I really gonna sign Cousins and draft a Baker Mayfield or Josh Allen? No way, those type of QBs come around a lot more often.

No matter who is under center, the line needs to be upgraded. It really depends on the circumstance. Get Cousins, fix the line ... get a prospect a few rounds later. Make sure you watch the Senior Bowl and the South team cause they got some mid round prospects that might shock a lot of people when they come into the league.

    I'm struggling with your logic.
Whether we drop 50M in guarantees on a QB, or move all our draft capital to trade up for a QB, protecting that investment is key either way.

Personally I feel we'd get a lot more value out of a Cousins / Quenton Nelson combo, with draft capital to spare..
Instantly improve our passing game and running game, with both guys having pro bowl potential, and all our 2019 picks in tact.

  8. I fill as many "Needs" as i can in free agency w. the exception of FQB(would rather have Keenum/Mccown/Bridgewater). First & foremost on that list is OL,followed by Offensive skill, Edge & corner.

This is another reason i don't want Cousins. i'd rather see that money go to other needs so we can really hone in on a QB early in the draft as well as not force need over talent.Paying Cousins.the 28-30 Million for Cousins could be used to fill 2-3 other needs at less exprensive positions in dire need of upgrades.

  9. It's simple. I don't want to pay Cousins 28-30 mill when A. He isn't franchise Caliber B. That $ can go towards other needs.

The draft becomes alot more simplified at that stage. QB is prioritized early...and BPA the rest of the way

I've said this before, but if they sign Cousins, they will not draft a QB at #6, nor should they. That would be a total waste of the pick. With what they'll be paying Cousins and the length of the contract, Cousins will start and that rookie QB would be sitting on the bench for his entire rookie contract. Sorry, Kurt, but that makes zero sense.

In addition, as you said above, if they sign Cousins, the rebuild is over. They're going all in with FAs and drafting players that can contribute immediately so they can be immediately competitive. We'll be right back where we were 2 years ago.

Cousins is a top 10 QB. That is 'franchise caliber' whatever that means.

In your plan, we'd have no draft picks to surround the QB, who will be a major risk themselves.

There's no point in a team full of high priced FA's surrounded by a rookie developmental QB.
    We've seen that movie before.

There's only 3 QBs I want early. Rosen, Darnold, or Jackson. I really like Lamar Jackson, but getting Cousins and getting a young lineman / edge rusher does also intrigue me. Keenum is going to cost you 15M a year. Are you going to really pay Keenum that when you can have a proven talent in Cousins? For what 10M-15M more? It's worth it dude. Keenum is not proven. Viking fans don't want him back now that Shurmur is a HC of the Giants.

    Gotta evaluate the options tho

  13. It's called hedging the bet. It's saying that this QB is so dire that we're signing the top FA available & supplementing that w. a draft pick who can compete with Cousins early and hopefulluy provide long term prospects.

It's a very unrealistic scenario...but I'm operating under the assumption that the Rookie QB will beat out Cousins by year 2 if not sooner. Cousins is the safety net if the draft pick fails. While he's not perfect & will be vastly overpaid..he's a short to medium term upgrade over Mccown & Fitzpatrick.

Been doing a lot of thinking about Cousins when I am trying to daydream and ignore the wife and the boss lol.... Honestly, if I was Kirk Cousins, I wouldn't want to sign with the Jets. Terrible offensive line, a staff that sucks and will be fired soon, in a division with Brady & Belichick. Why would he want to sign here? The only reason he would, and might, is if the Jets offer him the most money.

Do we really want to give $25 million ++++ annually to Kirk Cousins? Idk, yes, I guess, as the Jets are so damn desperate that it would be nice to have a decent quarterback for once. But long term, is tying all that cap room up to any QB, especially one that is at Cousins' level (a step below the Brady/Brees/Russ Wilsons, lets be honest), a good idea??? I don't think so.

So while I desperately want a quarterback that doesn't suck, believe me, and sure if they sign Cousins I won't be angry, how could I be? but deep down I do think it's better idea not to go broke for this guy and instead use your draft capital for once, in a year where it looks like a solid QB class, to hope you draft the next Kirk Cousins and therefore have him for cheap.

  15. But I don't think Cousins is a top 10 QB. He's top 15 at best.

How are there no draft picks to surround the QB with? My plan suggests staying at #6 at least to start & changing on the fly if necessary. In that scenario we ensure compensation packages are evenly distrubuted between this year & next to make sure we have a decent number of picks to continue building. Additionally, once QB is in house we prioritize trading down to recuperate lost picks & create volume.

Kurt, the rookie QB would not beat out Cousins, even if he played better. IMO you're not being realistic. The Jets aren't gonna pay $34 million per season for Cousins to sit on the bench, and no one will trade for him. If Mac were to sign Cousins and then draft a QB at #6, I'd want him fired on the spot and not even let him finish the draft. Again, that rookie would wind up sitting for the entire term of his contract. There is no way the Jets should take a QB at #6 if they sign Cousins.

I'm curious. If you think he'll be "the real deal", why does it matter if you take him at 6? If he does succeed as you believe and become the elusive FQB of the Jets, wouldn't still be a fantastic move to have gotten him? To put it another way: how would you feel if Macc decided to be "smart" and passed on him at 6 for some one else, and then you watch as somebody takes him - NE is rumored to love him - before Macc gets his 2nd pick?

Bottom line is if you (the GM) believes a QB can be your FQB you need to ignore all the "smart" people and take him first chance you get.

Personally I wouldn't go near Rosen or Jackson.
I like Darnold, but he's just as big a project as Allen (who I like more), and I wouldn't trade up for either.

Lots of different opinions about all these QB's.
None are a slam dunk, that's for sure. All the more reason to sign Cousins imo, and draft a QB outside of round 1 where there's bound to be value in this deep class.

Honestly, I'd rather trade up for Rosen or Darnold. Wishful thinking, but maybe the Browns give us the number 1 pick for a reasonable price. :)

I want Josh Rosen too, but there's a real good chance the Browns do not want to trade down. No way the Giants trade down with the Jets. That leaves the Colts, and even if we could trade up with them, both Darnold and Rosen are likely gone. Now what does Mac do? Trade up to number 3 or perhaps 4 for Baker Mayfield? If we miss out on all the top QB's, then in my opinion we draft the best offensive lineman at 6, or trade back if someone wants to trade up, and acquire more day one picks.
