Not necessarily. Drafting overslot on a OLB/DE is also a FAIL, as we saw with Gholston, or as Jacksonville saw when it drafted TWO a few years ago. When you're in the Jets position, you have the luxury of drafting either the best defensive player available OR the best player available period. It certainly makes sense for the Jets to bolster their defense, but, as we've seen with the Mets, you can't rest on your laurels and assume that all the things that were good the previous year will continue to be good. The Jets have a lot of needs this year, and offensive skill position players are low on the list. That said, with the lack of a CBA it's going to be extremely difficult for us to add depth outside of the draft. It would probably make the most sense for us to trade back a little bit and accrue as many picks as possible. We need some help in the secondary, but we also need offensive line depth, and front seven depth across the board. I think waiting a little while and drafting a Jordan Shipley, third down slot type receiver would be equally as helpful to this offense as drafting a Golden Tate, and would allow us to address more pressing needs earlier in the game, and make the team younger and deeper on the whole. -X-
I mean the one thing we have going for us is the ability to draft well, especially in the mid rounds...
and in the 1st since 2006. The Gholston fiasco should not stain the amazing success Tanny has had in the 1st. Keller was a 1st round pick in 08 as well, and he was very important in the playoffs this year.
Kurt, I strongly disagree, at least this year. Many, if not most of the FA's we might have persued are now RFA's. This year, more than perhaps ever before, we will need to draft to need and get a starter with that first round pick. We won't be able to plug holes through free agency the way we could before. We really can't go after RFA's either, at least of starter quality. Sheppard is certainly gone, Strickland may be as well. Ryan often has 6 DB's against some opponents. Lowery is a weak link at least as a starting CB, and so is Rhodes. What happens if either Revis or Leonard miss some games? Who is going to fill these holes? The way I see it, Ryan has almost no choice but to look for a starting DB. We are likely already down two DB's, and after Revis and Leonard it's a fairly weak group. Lowery may improve, but I don't know if he is ready to get thrown at 15 times a game, since QB's stay away from Revis. This year, more than any, is a need based draft.
That may in fact become reality..but Let's wait and see. I just can't envision Tanny going into a draft w/ that big of a glaring hole at ANY position. That just isn't his track record. There are whispers that the "final 8" restriction may have a loophole in it, I wouldn't be surprised if Sheppard is resigned(possibly strickland too) and Tanny has gotten creative w/ some trades in the past. If this does become reality... our future is not as bright as the consensus leads you on. Going into the draft w/ that adamant of a need is just an absolute disaster.
I think it will be very difficult to get Sheppard to agree to renogotiate his contact. He wasn't too happy about not starting against the Colts. Strickland isn't bad, but the Colts got rid of him because he can't stay healthy too. Strickland missed what, something like 8 games? There are a couple of long in the tooth DB's in FA... but given the small pool of FA's this year, we would have to over pay. As far as how bright the future looks, I am very pessimistic there will be a season in 2011. The NFLPA is talking out of the side of their mouth, and the owners have a gag order.
Take a CB first.....take a wide later.... I think we could still get one of the top 5 CBs at 29, and still have a shot at a solid WR talent (even Shipley, Decker, or Cooper) in round 2. .....Just think back to Manning picking apart the right side of that secondary. We need a CB - one that can stay on the field.
larry taylor the jets already have their slot receiver under contract.his name is larry taylor and he is an explosive combination of receiver /returner.
The guy averaged 20.8 yards per return in the CFL. If he's the answer to our big play problems, we're in big trouble. I would venture Danny Woodhead could put up better stats in the CFL. In fact, no one's mentioned Woodhead. A year of learning the slot could do wonders for him. I'd certainly consider him more viable than this guy. -X-
As much as I like woodhead, I feel his role is going to almost completely disappear with Leon back. And I REALLY dont think hes the solution to our slot issues. I know height isnt an end all, but I think Woodhead would be either the shortest or second shortest wr in the entire NFL.
Yea, right alongside a guy named Wesley Welker. Has the speed and the hands.....needs seat time......
i like your line of thinking. i am sure many vikings fans thought the team had bigger needs to fill when they took harvin last season. after hearing the shonne greene story i have nothing but confidence in the scouting department to identify the players who will be able to make an impact for this team. in any other year i would be totally on board with going BPA with a team that was just in the afc championship game. the reason i find myself hesitating on this is because i honestly have no idea how the jets are gonna fill their secondary this year. the free agency rules seem to be beyond confusing and i really have no interest in actually reading the CBA for myself. until i have a better understanding of what the jets will and will not be able to do in free agency i can't make a real judgment on the possibility of drafting a guy like tate in the first.
If Rhodes can get his act together and Smith and Ihedigbo can continue to improve, I am not concerned with the safety position. Even if we were to keep Sheppard, he and Strickland are injury nightmares. You cant have two such players on the team at the same position, so one of them is gone. If that player is Sheppard, we are left with only one starting caliber CB on the roster as well as a solid nickle. Even if we manage to keep Sheppard, we cannot rely on him to be on the field. We need to draft the first CB that falls to us. We need defensive backs to get past the Patriots for the division, and we need defensive backs to get past the Colts for the conference. Another 1st round receiver helps in neither of those causes.
