I think it is worth mentioning that we had ourselves a burner in SANTANA MOSS, and now, well... we don't. Bradway and Herm preferred the unspectacular Coles.
Couple things about Moss, whom I was mostly a huge fan of. He wanted a new deal after a pretty unspectacular year where he liked to run out of bounds all the time. He tried to parley 1 great catch in San Diego and 1 great return in Pittsburg into big money, and got called on it. As for getting Coles back, I was fine with it because he is a more complete WR than Moss, though like Moss, is not a #1 WR. I'd be fine with keeping Coles and getting Rogers to audition for the #1 role, but I'm not going to shed many tears if Coles is dealt while he still has some worth, as long it improves the team.
I'm not advocating trading Coles. All I'm saying is that at this point in their careers Branch is an impact player with some upside and Coles is very flat. I would never have traded the Coles of 2002 and 2003 for Branch even up but those days are gone and between his toe and lip Coles is worth a lot less to the Jets than Branch would be.
i think any reciever we get here isnt going to look very good unless theyre good at catching a lob pass accross the middle and ok with getting decked by a linebacker
That's about as accurate of a statement as I've seen in this thread. Maybe if the receivers could carry giant fucking nets to grab those ducks, they'd make something happen. Or even better, send them out with 12 guages and they can just pluck them out of the sky. It's Duck Season!
Moss for Coles was a sensible trade. Coles had been great for us. Moss was coming off a mediocre year at best, and Coles was already familiar with the team. That famiiliarity for Coles is somewhat gone now because of the new regime and all the new players. Right now, I would prefer Branch to Coles. Is Branch a better receiver than Coles? I don't know. Branch is younger, quicker, and faster though, and this offense needs a guy who can break plays open. We don't have anyone who can do that consistently. Sure, Smith or Washington might have one or two big plays this year, but Branch can have 9 or 10 a year.
IMO Branch is a better receiver than Coles. Considering the cap hit from dealing Coles and the upfront money needed to sign Branch, trading LC for Branch would be dumb.
So you're not considering the Ramsey factor and all the screen passes thrown his way in '04 or the rotating QB disaster that the JETS were last year had something to do with his "down" years?
Get the hell out of here this better be only a rumor. Coles is our best receiver and is a damn good one for the offense we run.
What offense are we running and when is going to score points? I like Coles but on this team the only untouchable players on our O are D'Brick, Mangold.
There's a reason this guy went #2 overall, and there's 2 reasons why the Lions let him go. I've already covered them. Go research those reasons and come back with an intelligent response. Thank you.
I think it's pretty clear that the turf toe is what has lowered his production. He just can't get comfortable on the field and he does not have the same speed to the outside he used to. Coles had quite a good season in 2003 with Ramsey throwing to him. Then he hurt the toe and it's been very flat since then. His reluctance to have surgery on the foot is likely caused by professional advice (agent and doctor) that it's a coin-flip whether it helps or hurts him. I like Coles a lot and supported the decision to bring him back last year for Moss. I'm obviously not a Bradway fan but I had no qualms about that choice. All of that said I think if we could get Branch for Coles we should grab it. Branch still has burner speed and would add a dimension to the Jets that is not present now. And obviously he's a big game player.
Just my opinion, but I don't think Rogers is worth the risk. We have enogh injury prone players already. Plus, what are the implications if he fails another drug test? Would he be at 3 strikes yet?
What risk? I don't see any risk at all if we can pick him up with his current contract and give nothing up. If he flops, fine - cut him. He obviously has loads of talent/potential.
This coming from the guy who wants to hand our #1 Wr position to a guy who hasn't played a full NFL season. To a guy who has talent but doesn't really care to do anything about it. A guy who has been said to have a crappy work ethic. Yeah im sure Mangini will give him the starting position. And let's go trade our best wide out for the raiders holdout player while we are at it too. While we are at it would you trade our #1's for the next two years for Branch? Yeah thats intelligent for you.
Especially since he's a safety IMO Branch is better than Coles, however with the cap ramifications involved, getting Branch and dumping Coles is a lateral move.
