yeah, it seems just as likely that Mangini felt it necessary to start cooling out and warming up. Laveraneous -- who on previous interviews seemed genuinely confused and perturbed by Mangini's approach -- hasn't been buying the Mangini Kool Aid. It is about time for Mangini to start chilling out. Someone mentioned Mangini in the same sentence as Parcells. I'm all for the system, but it has to be tempered. Mangini doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as parcells -- yet.
I suspect the "reliable source" is non other than Kevin Mawae. It was reported on WFAN last week that Mawae keeps in contact with some of his old Jet teammates and he claimed they hated Mangini. But this contradicts the report in the paper tha tthe players are taking to him. I am sure it is a little of both.
I agree. I think that it's the members of the press trying to get back at Mang because they actually have to work for their stories for the first time in 5 years. They are looking for any excuse to tear this guy down and they are not going to wait until the end of his first pre-season to try and do it. They would rather have the Jets lose all the time but have a head coach that gives them copy than a team that will win in the not too distant future but has a coach that is very closed mouthed. It's so easy to write up about the "Same old Jets". ( Heaven forbid that they have to actually analyze how the team is playing on the field. It might prove that they really haven't known what they were talking about for the past 20 years.) It has started to happen with way too much frequency and I for one is starting to get very annoyed with our current crop of "Beat" reporters. As for the player that made those statements, most likely a benched starter that got away with doing nothing for the past few years and who has found out that he actually has to do some work earn his paycheck under this new regime.
Actually, he isn't even the Jets beat reporter for FAN this year, at least that is what he told me about 2 months ago. He said he USED to be the station's Jets beat reporter.... as far as I know, they don't have a guy asigned to that "position". Now, he's just a fill in guy.
Parcells was Parcells before he was Parcells. This team was run into the ground by a soft HC, it isn't going to get turned around without a few butts kicked. The press murdered Coughlin during his first training camp. Coughlin took over a 4 & 12 Giant team run by a soft HC. The media tried to run him out of town in his first camp. Two years latter they won their division and now they are a legit contender. How much bitching do we hear about Coughlin from the media right now?
the country club is closed, obviously the vets aren't going to be happy about it. this year is a rebuilding year to see who will buy in and who won't. goal will be to be competitive next year and hopefully be a sb contender after that.
Remember 2 years ago when the Giants players staged an open revolt against Tom Coughlin because they were coming off of the baby soft regime of Jim Fassel? Look at them now--they love Coughlin because they win football games. The same rule applies with Bill Parcells or Ken Hitchcock in the NHL: make players earn your respect and it will benefit them on the field. At the other end of the spectrum there are coaches like Al Groh, who lose lockerrooms in 10 minutes by taking the disciplinarian image too seriously and becoming a total jackass. So Mangini has to tread the line cautiously.
Parcells wasn't Parcells until he became Parcells. And when again Winston was the last time Tom Coughlin won the Super Bowl as a Head Couch? he's 4 - 5 in the playoffs and has an all time record of 85 - 75. And last year wasn't exactly pretty versus Carolina. Wait. Wait a second here, we didn't just -- we aren't going to compare Eric Mangini to Parcells Winston. We just aren't.
And you know what? where are you all getting this love fest for Tom Coughlin? Of course the players are content to win. No one complains when they win.
Exactly, and if a Coughlin/Parcells disciplinarian approach can lead to more wins than an Edwards/Fassel coddling method then that's what Mangini should be using. You said it yourself, it doesn't matter if a guy is the ultimate players coach, he'll be turned on the minute the team starts losing. So all we can really do is hope that the players respond to Mangini's style and win games because if they don't then we have to get rid of him and we have to bring in somebody who can get the players to work for him.
maybe. what I'm really saying is just because Herm was last year, doesn't mean Mangini nees to be the "equal and opposite reaction" here. Moderation is key. They left arms pushes away while the right arm embraces. Its got to be multi-dimensional. Mangini doesn't yet have the credibility nor the rapport to play the role Terminator. And even the terminator found his sense of humor in T2 -- so I'm sure Mangini can do it. but with mangini's approach, if he doesn't win, his actions and style will not be justified. Winning is the only justification for anything.
Beating a dead horse here, but didn't it come out the Giants hated Coughlin??? People just trying for a scoop.....
My point isn't that Mangini is going to be great he could bust. My point is he is what he is and if the players win and hate him I could care less. To me what it ultimately comes down to is the quality of the players, the prep of the players, the plan and the performance. Time will tell on Mangini but the fact is there are a lot of people who run very successful businesses and sports teams who are very controlling very intense and focused individuals. Most of the really good ones have left a trail of hate behind them. We have a lot of dead wood or underperforming players on this team. A serious, intnese attitude may be just what this team needs? If they succeed and win that is going to be the payoff for these guys, if they don't your right a softer coach will be easier to lose with.
To backup your point, you heard absolutely NOTHING about the Jets hatred of Groh until they went on their losing streak to end the year.
again this isn't about right or left, its about balance, we have a hc, trying to put on his best parcells/bellichek shtick. I just hope that he has the same genius and motivational abilities as they. B/C it is the only reason they lasted. Sheer Genius.
This is the huge difference between Mangini and Herm. Those that were here last year probably have had the biggest wake up call, as Mangini's style is on the opposite pole relative to Edwards. I would bet the players have a lot of respect for Mangini. That does not equate to "hate". Burkhart's use of this word is yet another stupid comment by someone in an attempt to sensationalize journalism. I will bet that we will have a solid consensus from everyone that we are moving in the right direction this year. That does not necessarily mean post-season play. I will say this, under Mangini, we will make the playoffs because we earned it and not because we backed in (2 times under Herm, when it could have gone the other way).
He doesnt have the credibility? Of who? You? The media? There has been some moderation in tc- they actually eliminated some two a days and gave the players an extra day off when they werent expecting it. I remember when Weis and Parcells used to stand over players in tc and scream and curse at them (especially Weis). That stuff hasnt happened here. If he's running a strict tc, good for him. This team needed an enema and kick in the butt after herm's antics.
I appreciate where you?re coming from on this. I agree that Parcells and BB are really brilliant but they are also very different. Parcells besides being a very strict guy is a nuanced guy. He is smart and funny and knows how to manipulate the press, the fans and players. While he has great principles for winning football he also has great feel for individuals. He is also a guy who makes decissions on gut instinct often to his peril and his success. Bellichek on the other hand is a brilliant football tactician but he has less personality than Parcells and is much more reliant on his brilliant football principles and breaking down his opponents than individual player motivation, at least that's how it appears to me on the outside. What they both have in common and I hope Mangini has in common are the same basic principles of football. Mangini has to figure out who his guys are and who aren't his guys. The first year of rebuilding is really about breaking it down and than building it up. Whether Mangini is going to be able to build it back up and succeed isn't going to be answered until the third year. I just think it's a mistake to worry about certain players bitching at this point. Many veteran players try to avoid training camp all together. It's not uncommon particularly when you have a 4 & 12 team with a new boss and jobs are on the line. As far as the press, Mangini doesn't have Parcells ability to charm them while giving them nothing. He is also not BB who has zero charm with the press and appears as if he doesn't really care but he has the resume that it doesn't really matter. I'm willing to wait and see how this all develops before second guessing him. I do have major concerns about our OC but Mangini appears to have the same concerns.
