All seriousness I call Carrie Rhodes a pony, and celebrity wanna be homo, but it seems every1 wants to play for Rex Ryan's fast, chaos bringing, and fun defense. For this guy to get on Dennis Thurman, and Rex Ryan's bad side is outrageous, and insane. Fuck em. Have fun being a big time big shot celebrity in the desert of Arizona.
When can we remove Rhodes from the jets on Twitter link? I don't care what she is doing in Arizona, I'm just happy she's there.
im proud to know my first post is to express support of kerry hitting the rhode. dude dipped his shoes in concrete before every game.
Evidentally, I'm not the only one that feels this way. This is from today's NY Post: "By unloading Rhodes, RB Thomas Jones and CB Lito Sheppard, the Jets dumped more than $20 million in 2010 salary in an uncapped year, fueling speculation they might be tightening the purse strings because of the labor uncertainty and the costs of the new stadium." The Jets management says differently, but that's to be expected. Like I said, Woody Johnson got rid of very good players, because he cared more about cutting costs than winning a championship. And IMO, it also showed disloyalty to TJ and Feely, two of the players that the rest of the team loved the most. What these two players brought to the Jets on the field and in the locker room is hard to come by. If these two don't wind up back on the Jets, I think it will be a mistake that will come back to haunt the team. I keep using the example of the Yankees, but it's true. The Yankees pay top dollar to players to give them a shot at the championship each and every year. It doesn't always work, but that's what they do. The Jets are showing that they are the opposite. And when it comes to loyalty, no one beats the Yankees. Woody Johnson could learn a thing or two from the Steinbrenners. And I like Woody. Don't get me wrong. He tried to bring the Jets to NYC. He worked his butt off to do it. But now I see a different side to him that doesn't work with a New York team. New York needs winners, and the Jets are going backwards because a billionaire doesn't want to part with his money.
Unfortunately there's not much loyalty on either side of the fence in sports anymore. Players are there to make as much money as they can, and so are the owners. It is extremely rare to see players stay on the same team their entire career. Woody has spent a lot of money putting a quality product on the field the last few years.
Not exactly. Woody spent just as much as the other NFL teams, because he had to work within a cap. And Woody hired a GM to take care of finding players and picking in the draft. Now, there is no cap. Yet, Woody is acting as though there is. The Jets team is worth more than what, 95% of the world's sports teams? And the Jets are in NY, where we fans demand championships. At least, I do. If you have an opportunity to re-sign players that will help you get the championship, you do it. Woody's not.
Most teams are acting as though there is a cap, because they know there will most likely be a cap in place for 2011. They understand how these things work, unlike some people. Show me a team not named the Chicago Bears that is spending like there is no tomorrow. You can't.
Congratulations. George Steinbrenner has brought ONE championship to the Yankees since he went absolutely overboard and started buying the best players in the league. Those late 90s teams were slightly high priced role players. This team has plenty of those. Of course, there's also the argument that THIS ISN'T BASEBALL. You have to concern yourself with larger rosters, more working parts, and the fact that you only have a couple of positions that can truly make an impact alone and change the game. Thomas Jones isn't that player any more. He's a good RB who becomes better by virtue of his offensive line. He's not remotely irreplaceable. And Feely is a freaking kicker, and an average one at that. You act as though our best players were on the cut list this week.
This thing isn't over yet. We still have some time in free agency if someone gets let go from another team. But mainly, there's the draft, and I have a feeling that we are going to rack up on some solid players there. Are you truly saying that Woody doesn't care about championships as long as he saves a buck? Just because he's trying to be fiscally smart? We aren't Tampa Bay, where they are a gazillion dollars under the cap. Your argument would be valid there.
I wasn't happy to hear about the trade. I've been vocal that I wanted to have Rhodes here, so seeing him traded at all was disappointing. The fact that we got a 4th and next year's 7th bothered me a lot. I know people are saying "Well it was obvious we were trading him" "He's a lesser replacement on the team he's now with" whatever. The fact is, Arizona needed a replacement. And we gave him away. Rhodes is an above average safety who underplayed his talent. So the question now is, now what? I don't want Smith to be the starter. I like him, but not that much. As for spending money, like abyzmul said, most teams are being smart and not overspending, anticipating that there will eventually be a cap. You'd be really pissed off if the Jets spent like the Yankees today, then when the new CBA has a cap we have to release everyone for no compensation and wind up with a basement dweller.
I wasn't happy with the trade compensation for Rhodes either, but my satisfaction with the overall trade depends in part on what we do now. I do think he had become a problem, although I held out on that in large part because of how well we saw him play for two seasons in the past. Either way, I trust the FO. As far as the Yankees comparison, it continues to be ridiculous every time the guy brings it up. This is not a game that essentially boils down to a 1 on 1 battle every play. It's the epitome of a team game, and it makes ZERO sense to overspend on role players, especially ones who have been consistently overvalued by a few people on the board. Thomas Jones and Jay Feely wouldn't have NEARLY the impact this guy wants to think they would.
Look, I've been a bigger supporter of Rhodes than practically anyone here, but for the most part I have to agree. Obviously the Jets wanted to be rid of him regardless of what they said publicly. There's no other way to explain the devalued trade. (And anyone who thinks we got fair compensation really should wake up.) I'm holding out trust, but really, I'm nervous we won't do something here and get a good safety. We could have a really deadly defense if we upgrade safety (and all Rhodes fanboyism aside, I realize we can upgrade the position with what's available.) TJ is gone and I don't have a problem with it. He's replaceable. More replaceable than practically any other player on the entire team. Hell, his replacements are already here. Feely I'm very leery about. We'll see with Folk, but it's becoming pretty clear that the Jets have no intentions of bringing back Feely who I do like. I do agree that neither is that huge a loss though.
I respectfully disagree with you on both counts. If it's an uncapped year, and you sign guys for a season, they leave at the end of the season, so they don't count towards the following year's cap. Am I wrong about that? Second, I think both TJ and Feely had an amazing impact on our team. TJ did fade down the stretch. That is true. But he had to take up the slack for Washington, so if Wash was not injured, TJ wouldn't have had to work so hard. But he did, in the end, have 14 touchdowns and 1400 yards. That's a pretty great season in anybody's book. And Feely was very consistant, and he played his heart out. Consistant, accurate kickers are not a dime a dozen. This guy Folk that we signed kicked 18 of 28 last season, before the Cowboys drop kicked him the H out of Dallas. Feely made 30 of 36. He was one of the best in the league last season. And both these guys are loved by the rest of the team. Feely is the one that coordinates outting events for the team. And TJ worked and worked and was a role model for all the young guys, including Sanchez who said he would look to Jones for advice. I hope, in the end, both guys are signed by the Jets. If not, the Jets will have to live with their mistake, and we as fans will have to live with it too.
Umm, you're right. THe only problem with your logic is that both players will receive multi-year contracts somewhere else. Why would they come back to a team, late in their careers, on a one year deal? If they did I'd laugh at them for their stupidity. And if the Jets signed them on a multiyear deal and then dumped them it would be a pretty big stain on the organization, so don't even bother bringing up that idea. TJ didn't just fade down the stretch. He started off slow too. He had a good third of a season behind arguably the league's best OLine. Feely has been one of the Jets' best kickers ever. That doesn't make him one of the best in the league. I'm a big Feely fan, but the numbers have been exposed, and even I have to admit he wasn't phenominal. Definitely not irreplaceable (and if Folk lives up to his potential, we've made a significant upgrade.) Jeez I am sick of this stuff. Everyone is concerned with personalities. Sure, it's nice for everyone to sit around singing kumbaya. But in the end, I want to see the team win. You do that by putting the best players on the field. If they play patty-cake in the locker room, then all the better, but if they spit on each other in the tunnel yet bring it on the field, I don't give a flying rat's ass. How do you chalk something up to a mistake that hasn't even happened yet? What if Leon runs for 2,000 and scores 18 TDs this year? What if Greene averages 6.8 yards per carry? What if Folk nails a 62 yarder to clinch the AFC Championship? I'll live with whatever decision the Jets make and I'll evaluate them all next February.
100% agreed. Players are the first ones to bail on teams that have been good to them, so why shouldn't it go both ways? That's for any sport. If you want to get paid, perform well and show potential. That's why these stupid huge rookie contracts are annoying.
