What sucks was he was doing the organization and fans such a big favor by deciding to stay instead of demanding a trade LOL
Nope. We never drafted anyone in the 4th who turned out to be a starter or an important and dynamic player on the team. Nope. Not once. Not ever.
As annoying as Kerry's diva act is, I think he was traded because he doesn't fit the role that FS demands in Ryan's scheme. I hate the sound of that, too, since it's eerily similar to the reasoning that gave Vilma his ticket out of town. But Rhodes did not show the aggression in coverage that Rex wants, and when Rex asked Kerry to work on it with Thurman, he got an amzing surprise when the player told him he didn't want to be coached. I think Rhodes has the talent to play to that level in that role, I just don't think Rhodes cared enough to do it. The equals an uncoachable player, and I don't think Rex likes that kind of player. Cromartie's skillset fits the role that he will be playing. I will admit that I'm not happy about his off the field issues, and I'm also not happy with the apparent locker room issues he had, but I have no choice but to hope Ryan can do something with him to turn that around.
Hopefully they can pull rare talent in a late round again. I think they could've squeezed a third out of them, we need that.
I don't. The Jets hurt his trade value by benching him halfway through the season. I thought a 3rd would have been great, but this is a pretty damn deep draft by all accounts and a 4th this year could very well be worth more than a third next year.
That's what SD got for Cro, and that could even be a second round pick. They are very similar players too, both burst onto the the scene and have kind of fizzled now.
I dont see them as similiar at all. Cro was the best at his position in 2007. Rhodes has always been the guy who had the potential but he was NEVER considered close to the best at his position.
Kerry was one of the top performing AFC safeties in 2006, when Mangini let him attack the LOS constantly. He was snubbed in the Pro Bowl for John Lynch, but Lynch had been hurt a lot of that year and hadn't done shit to earn it. Once 2007 and 2008 rolled around, Kerry had bought into his own hype and never lived up to it. He even said after he got benched in an interview that when Rex asked him to talk to Thurman, he thought he didn't need to. He didn't think he needed to be coached. That's just sad. Kerry has all the talent in the world, but when a player's head is outside the game, and they don't care anymore like it seems with KR, then it's time to move on.
Not to mention we also got Leon Washington in the 4th. The only draft picks I think that are long shots are 6 and 7. Lots of good players have come out of the 5th round too. Also an extremely deep draft this year.
It's all a gamble. It's frustrating at times looking at our selection any given round, any year and seeing who was still available and who turned out to be a superstar. Then again we've also done ok with a few notable undrafted, i.e. Chrebet and Moore. Let's put some faith in the Jets scouts and in the coaching staff and see what they can do with whats out there this year. With the exception of Gholston, have been impressed with the last few drafts without a doubt.
I am completely late to this party so here are my thoughts...... I was in a bar after a hockey game when I saw the trade and the compensation. I can not say I was very happy with the compensation part as my initial thought was, "WTF?" Looking at the trade in this respect, the Rhodes compensation is somewhat the equivalent to what Cromartie was worth (4th this year is equal to a 3rd next). I suppose I was ok with it, given that a CB, all things equal, has higher value than a safety. Add into it, the fact that their draft positions were radically different (1st vs. 4th), Cromartie has a higher ceiling and is younger, makes the value somewhat tolerable. Also from all the anecdotal evidence, Rhodes was really unpopular with team mates. Again, there is no Jet coming out and saying Rhodes was a douche. However, it was a constant barrage of anonymous sources, he said, she said stuff that usually has undertones of truth to it. Ryan is the type of coach that pretty much every aggressive defender wants to play for. He puts his players in positions to succeed and has their backs when the situation calls for it. To not want to listen to him and ignore him is a complete joke and sets an awful precedence among the team. Ryans repeated requests to meet with Thurman, a well regarded DB coach with a wealth of experience, until Rhodes basically had no other choice speaks volume of his lack of character. I know many will want to compare this to Vilma. This nothing like that. Vilma was a solid citizen that was a poor fit within a 3-4 and really could not make plays in that system. He just did not have the physical abilities. However, Vilma did try and was never a locker room cancer. Also, he just had radical knee surgery when the Jets traded for him in a deal that was pretty good given the circumstances . Which brings me to Pete Kendall. Pete Kendall is another example I have heard brought up. Kendall an semi-important cog in the OL was released when it was virtually impossible to replace him with anything except Adrian Clark. My only quibble was the timing. Anyway, in this rambling thing was the following points............. I am ok with getting rid of Rhodes. I am in the wait and see mode to see what his replacement is and how this plays out. Kind of like the Cromartie deal. I hope these 2 deals is not the equivalent of a farmer switching from cow manure to horse manure.
Wohoooo god am I happy this guy is out of NYC. a 4th and a 7th isn't much but let's remember this move also gives the Jets A LOT more money available to use in 2011 when we'll have to re-discuss the contracts of Revis, Mangold etc. Sure, a cap might not be in place but we have to operate on the assumption that it will be back... I don't want to risk loosing Revis, Mangold, Harris etc!!! Plus this draft is so deep I'm sure we'll draft a good player in rd 4.
