I may be going out on a limb here...

'I am happy for my friend Jonathan Vilma because he just won the Super Bowl.'

Mmm... let's see if I can make it more clear...

Kerry Rhodes 02/08/2010 12:19 PM ET
I'm happy 4 my brother J vilma some people wanted him out a situation, he got out and got the BIG ONE! Congrats.

The only thing I want to read into this is Rhodes still is a me first, team second kind of guy...

You're not thinking like Rhodes man.

What he's saying is that Vilma was beaten down by Mangini, the organization, and the fans man. Then he was set free and allowed to flourish outside of NY, and he wins the Super Bowl.

maybe vilma getting a ring will be a motivating factor in rhodes getting his ass back in the right frame of mind to be the player he can be

Yeah, that bolded, underlined part is usually what happens before a player is traded to another team - ANY player on ANY team. And you sure hit the nail on the head with the final part of your post...

'The only thing I want to read into this is Rhodes still is a me first, team second kind of guy...'

If you don't like the guy, fine. I'm not a huge fan of his lately. But stop trying to villainize him with vague twitter comments.

That didn't seem vague at all to me...

On a sidenote, did Vilma get run out of town!? Didn't sound like that judging by what fans think on this board...

Vilma was traded - which is what happens when the new head coach isn't smart enough to find a way to use a talented player like Vilma certainly is. And that is exactly what Rhodes is alluding to.

And maybe that was the smartest thing that Mangini could have done. Because if Herm had been here, and Vilma didn't fit the scheme, not only would he not have found a way to take advantage of Vilma's abilities, he would have kept plugging that square peg into a round hole.

Exactly. Also, I found it interested what Rex said about Vilma. He said that they absolutely would have loved to have him and would have definitely found a way to fit him into their system. I think this is Rex's biggest strength- the ability to put his players in a position to succeed.

That leaves the door open for almost any free agent or available player, on top of the mass appeal a Rex Ryan team draws. These future offseasons are going to be different from our previous ones.

Vilma's a much stronger, more physical player than he was a few years ago.

Rex could probably do something with this Vilma, but old Vilma really had trouble getting off blocks even when he was fully healthy. I'm sure Mangini would figure out something to do with this Vilma too, despite the legends.

The only thing that could have been worse than Mangini running a 3-4 with Vilma as a poor fit at ILB would be Mangini running a 4-3. The team still did not have a DE to play opposite Ellis, no one at DT who could have been more of a rotational starter, and sub-par guys on the edges with Hobson and Barton. I doubt Mangini would have been able to manage guys in a system with witch he was not familiar any better than his own system with players that did not fit.

I'm sure the intricacies of the 4-3 defense in the NFL are beyond him too. That just sounds complicated...What's the 4 stand for again?
