I don't agree with this. Just because you move up in the first and pick a QB doesn't mean you plan on starting him in day one. You an on having him be your qb for the next ten years. Dont forget Eli didnt start o day one. If Clemens clearly gives us the best chance to win on day one then he will start.

Its all about his character....some rookies need that year on the bench and some need to be in it from the beginning in order to thrive (see Manning, Peyton). I think you can have success either way, assuming you guess right from the beginning. Throwing some in there on day one who really needed the year off is probably the fastest way to flush your future down the toilet, as the kid's confidence might be shot for the rest of his career(See Carr, David).

real bullets don't fly in TC.

he needs preseason, if the CS is convinced 99% that he can play week 1 then fine, but if its 98% or less - sit him.

laughable to see folks getting all uptight about whether kc had "swagger" or is losing some it. who cares? he's a qb who has yet to prove himself in the nfl. Hopefully he improves steadily and can help the team win games. You need to have a strong backup qb in the nfl and whether that person it sanchez or clemens - we still need to have a strong backup.

He never had swagger, just a big mouth. That his arm could not back up.

Yeah I think that Clemens could definitely fit into the backup role well

i never knew kc had swagger. if you define swagger as shaky legs in the pocket and forcing the ball then ok.

    Clemens answers, between the lines...

"I will certainly try to be as helpful to him as Chad [Pennington] was to me."
He couldn't beat Chad even on his best day, ala Favre. I want Sanchez learning nothing from Clemens.

"I have been told right now that it?s an open competition and the best player will play."
If anyone in the FO believed he could be the best player we wouldn't give Sanchez a garranteed $30 million. Also don't you think Kellen would have had some talks of an extension by now?

"We?ll compete and keep doing what we?ve been doing."
As a 2nd round top three QB in the draft he should have been the starting QB by his third year, not competing against a rookie QB in his fourth season.

    "My opportunity, it?s right now."
No it was two seasons ago when you were handed the starting QB job and sucked. Don't blame the OL forever.

"Coach Ryan, it?s an open competition."
Wake up, you are the only person in that locker room that truely thinks that.

"I?m going to get a fair shot at the starting job."
    Same answer as last question.

"That?s everything you can ask for, to have a chance to come in and compete for a starting spot on a team."
The last three years you had a chance and couldn't answer the call.

"is a great opportunity regardless of who I am competing against."
It is believed by many he couldn't even beat out Ratliff, yet he believes Ryan will start him over the new face of the Jets.

"The beautiful thing when you are competing with yourself, it doesn?t matter who the other guy is."
Wake up! $30 million garrantreed vs no extension talks, right.

On Ryan saying he ?has a good idea how the quarterback competition will go??
"I take that literally. He?s got an idea on who he thinks is going to start. I don?t know who that is. I hope it?s me."
Pile of hope in one hand, pile of shit in the other, what ways more?

He outperformed Chad in TC in 2007 but Mangini couldn't make the move, even though his job probably rested on having his QB become the guy. It was a terrible offseason for the Jets and it showed in the end,

The area of the draft that Clemens was picked in (second round after pick 40 or so) is a deadzone for QB's for whatever reason. No hall of fame QB has come from that area of the draft and only a few good ones, with Jake Plummer probably being the best. I posted a list a few months ago and it was shocking what happened to the results of QB's after pick 40 in the second round.

He was never handed the starting job at any point. He inherited it when Chad failed miserably, in the middle of a horribly lost season with a lousy offensive line. This is fully on Eric Mangini. He had to be a more proactive coach and instead he wet himself repeatedly when the choice had to be made, only finally making it when he had no other option.

Again, this is on Mangini and his staff. Clemens did ok in 2006 and 2007 but was not given a real opportunity due to Chad's leadership role on the team (which there was nothing Clemens could do about), in 2008 Mangini got scared and went for Favre. It was a losing move by a losing coach.

Ratliff looked great in the offseason before 2008. That didn't land him an opportunity either. Mangini just doesn't know how to handle the QB position. I wish him luck with that in Cleveland, because he's got nastier decisions there and he's probably going to screw those up also.

If its close the Rookie will get it but I agree, the best QB will play. I hope both look good and we have ourselves 2 QB's for years to come. Imagine that, a QB problem, both are starters. Its gonna be fun, just hope coach plays fair.

Chad was a first round pick who waited quite a bit longer than opening day, too.
