I would hope that is true - especially if Jets want DLs that are stout up front. Obviously, Williams wall was quite effective eating up the blockers, freeing up the DEs at the edge. This was one of the most missing elements in Jets DL this year - I hope this is cured somehow.
I never liked the fact an ex safety, who coached DBs all his life, was coaching our DL. Like the move.
they've extended the offer to him: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...ted-to-name-karl-dunbar-defensive-line-coach/ not sure if he accepted or not yet
He's probably holding out for the Rooney Rule interviews before he accepts. I wonder if his face disqualifies him now?
It's time for the Coaches complaint. I've watched the rush and/ or blitz for too many years NOT to see problems. Back to Gastineau, who used his speed to get around the OL and get the QB from the back. DL coaches then taught the player to just ride him 10 yards back and always stay between him and the QB....no more sacks. Well, this year I saw too many of our rushers 10 yards behind the QB and out of the play. IF the DL Coach can't teach our players to push in to collapse the pocket, instead of back behind the action, FIRE him. He also better teach them to disengage after 3/4 seconds and jump or get an arm in the air. Maybe a deflection but at least a try to block the view. That's one thing the QB's hates, interrupting his concentration. So if Dunbar can get these basics into action....Hurray for progress.
I think the PR behind the QB was a function of Maybin's speed and lack of strength. He could burn by OL guys and outrun them to the QB by driving past them and coming back to the QBs. Maybin is going to need to add a lot of power to drive through blockers cause he's on the smaller side. His speed is his ally and although he will add some power & muscle, he shouldn't bulk up so much that it will cut down his speed. Its just too bad for us that Gholsten had no heart and desire otherwise we'd have a perfect combo.
There was an article out towards the end of November that showed Maybin had the highest sack rate in the NFL for players with 5+ sacks. I'm not sure what it ended up as, but some food for thought. He also picked up a variety of moves over the season.
Your logic is on the money However, there were plenty of times he ran 10+ yards behind the QB and 10+ yards toward the opposing QB and was within nanoseconds of a sack. Having some of the best corners in the league helps with the coverage sack. On your original point - yes we absolutely need a PR that can drive through a blocker. I would think there are five nine's of this fan base that agree with that.
I think the base defense is pretty irrelevant with the multiple fronts Rex likes to use. But whenever the Jets employ 4 down linemen, it leaves a ton to be desired. Dunbar could bring a lot in terms of improving penetration and containment.
I don't even care if we change our scheme or not. I just hope Dunbar can stop our guys from getting stood up and trapped. There is some talent on our D-line but our technique was poor this year.
When free agency and the draft are over it will be the players we have that decide the defense. Just as Bellishit changed to a 4-3 after a billion years of doing the only thing he knew so will the Jets. As you all know this is a copycat league.
If you consider Bryan Thomas as a OLB, then you can say Rex was running 3-4. If you look at him as a DE, it was more like 4-3. (With slow Calvin Pace there, it looked like 5-2 a la Mangini days.)
