Former team picked an experienced guy, whom Campbell knew years ago, yes, but former coach no - Glenn's offer to call plays was better. He was not odd man out, he scored a good gig with Glenn. He is young, UFL 6 years ago is not a strike against him, all these guys trying to make a living. McVay was in UFL. Liam Coen accepted positon in FCS before the Rams called. Again, the resume is in line with some other people who succeeded. Like any new OC, probability of failure is certainly there. But he is as good as any candidate you take a chance on. You guys make it sound like he is some sort of reject fuck up. He is really not. Doesn't mean he will succeed, but we gotta see it play out, this is about as good an OC resume as we could have gotten with a defensive HC at the helm.
I didn’t realize Fields is as big as he is. I picture him was smaller in my head for some reason. He’s a pretty big boy
Again, this. And it's nice to see at least somebody else saying it out loud I mean can anybody even come up with an example of another successful OC hire elsewhere in the NFL that got the job after being passed over for the same promotion by his former team like that? Legit searching for a more reassuring viewpoint question there too.
Again, he’s gonna get his chance and I support him. He’s not that young , he’s 42. He has been in the NFL for 5 years. Put that in perspective, Frank Smith is 44 and has been in the NFL for 15 years. Arthur Smith is 42, been in the league for over 15 years. Jim Bob Cooter, 40 yo, 15 years in the league. There’s more, but yes Engstrand is an outlier. He’s not super young, he has a wife and young kids so you can pretty much count on the fact he’d rather be the OC of Detroit if he was offered since he wouldn’t have to move his family. He wasn’t even a consideration for CHI. Yes, Campbell went with the old vet in Johnny Morton to be the new OC, that’s far more an indictment of Engstrand given that Morton has 25 years of futility on his resume. If it weren’t for us Engstrand wouldn’t have been hired by any team as an OC, and the only reason he was hired by us is because Glenn knows him. If you had to bet odds that in 3 years Engstrand is either the next up and coming OC or the first scapegoat to get fired by Glenn, we both know where your money is going.
Engstrand was also one of several Lions assistants that Campbell didn't promote when Ben Johnson left btw. How far down can we take this?
Well it’s brutal because this is the same plan that has failed for us many times over. Rookie defensive HC paired with a rookie OC…not exactly a great track record for us
Last 2 seasons we had the most experienced OC in the league. We were the 5th team that Hackett had called plays for in the NFL. So, experience doesnt have a great track record here either
Ha! Very true! But to be fair, I don’t think ANYONE other than Rodgers thought Hackett was a good hire We ALL knew he would suck balls
Yeah it all boils down to HERE. Historically, almost nothing has worked HERE. Bringing in Veteran stop gaps, tanking, bringing in rookies, bringing in young guys with upside, bringing in established vets. It's gonna fail every time here nomatter how it's done. Those kinds of things have worked for other teams, so it's only a matter of time before it works here. Yeah, it might be a low percentage chance, but if the NFL goes for another 1000 years, we'll likely get a few playoff runs in there. Maybe 100 years from now. Maybe next year. Just keep rolling that 20 sided die.
