QB position will never improve? It is improving all the time. Obviously, having mobility as a QB is an added weapon and can greatly improve the player. However, in order for a QB to succeed, his running game cannot be his number 1 strength. IMO, a QB must possess raw passing talent and have a strong mental understanding of defenses, then he can work on his running skills.....not the other way around.
And if he wows then in the pro day all that will be thrown in the garbage, however if he went to the combine and wasn't by far the best QB then what you said can happen, they will be more critical on him in the combine, while in the pro day it will be in the perfect situation for him to succeed.
And he has the passing talent, why do people think that mobility for a QB is a bad thing, it just makes it easier for the running game and WRs to get open. In an offense that will not constrict his ability, he will be very successful.
Yeah, he has passing talent just like Michael Vick has passing talent... Good enough for the college level, but subpar in terms of NFL standards.
Matt Leinart > Vince Young> ????? is more like it... Cutler PR machine is running wild right now... talk about blinded by the lights.... Ellis
I'm going to post this exerpt here from a post in another thread... it just seems relevant to this conversation... Ellis
Wrong, I don't feel like comparing Vick and Young numbers as I have done that too much already, but lets just say that Young pass attempts are nearly double Vicks has just about double the passing yards in fact blew Vick out of the water in nearly every category, and in fact blew him away in rushing as well. Put them in a system that fits their skills the best and they will be good.
I'm torn. One one hand, I really want to draft a new QB. Pennington has just been hurt too often. ANd 2 surgeries on his throwing shoulder are too much, IMO. As for which of the top 3 QBs available, I would have no problem with any of the three. They are all equally risky. On the other hand, I still think it makes the most sense to give Chad one more chance, and sign Aaron Brooks, as much as I dislike him, as insurance. And also maybe grab Omar Jacobs or Drew Olson later in the draft. If Pennington can't do it, then the Jets will be in a good spot to grab a QB next season. That would make the most sense. So, I guess I have no
It all depends on how the feel about cutler, and how the talks with condon go. If they can't come to a fair agreement, i think we need to cut ties with chad and take cutler.
I guess I'll respond to it here then. A top 5 pick takes up about $2.5M in cap room this year. Penny's contract will be gone next year. Fiscally it makes sense to spend $2.5M and begin gaining experience for your new QB. Nothing changes the fortunes of a franchise around like a QB. Other teams have had O-line problems with new QBs, and they turned into dynasties. The Dallas Cowboys are an example, they had Aikman before they had Emmitt and a great offensive line. The Jaguars still have no offensive line. QBs get hit sometimes, it just happens. Pennington and Fiedler were eggs, and that's why they got injured. Bollinger did finish the year out, and he took some SICK shots. We're not just going to neglect the O-line. We take the QB first, and then spend the rest of the Day 1 picks on the O-line. We let our new QB sit the first 8 weeks, while a veteran takes a pounding and the O-line develops. We then let our QB gain experience the final 8 games, and then come back and hopefully be competitive the next year. Now I personally do not see how it's "good business" to turn down a chance at being a competitor in 2 years, because of wanting to save $2.5M on the cap. If the FO thinks Cutler is going to be a great QB, then passing up on him will just doom the franchise for years. Pretty much all the good teams in the NFL win because of superior QB play. You're just not going to get anywhere the McCowns and Harringtons of the world. But even the Harrington's of the world were top picks, it's just the gamble did not turn out well for them. Let's just hope it turns out well for us. You can't just not try at all. We've done enough "play not to lose horribly". Let's play to win fellas.
Don't you dare say that. Cutler is the devil! He kills little innocent puppies. The real experts who say he will be a good QB in the NFL don't know anything, it's all about the uneducated people who post on message boards, these days.
The problem with this philosophy is that QB's take some time to develop in most cases; If you wait until the OL is 'set' to draft your QB, by the time the QB is good to go, the OL men are FA. Just because we draft a QB this year does not mean that the guy HAS to start this year. And Cutler is used to playing behind bad OL's. If we are in the market for a QB, and we are, then you need to draft one ASAP and let him mature in OUR SYSTEM.
