I've read speculation online that he may have done this so his brain would be intact and be studied for the brain trauma work being done to check for the effects of repeated concussions.
That makes sense, but it makes me wonder how someone could be so far gone as to kill himself, yet still have the cognizance to leave his brain intact for future progress in the medical realm.
I can't imagine being as successful as he was and still feeling that way. Seems to me he was clearly depressed, and I had forgotten about the driving off the cliff thing. That was clearly a cry for help, which he never got. Some people just don't know what to do when they can't play anymore. Im sure he probably wondered the same thing and probably figured doing it in the heart would leave his head/brain intact. Horrific news.
The video of his mother as the press conference...Damn... “I pray to God, ‘Take me, take me, leave my son.’ But it’s too late.”...
The ESPN article mentions a former Bears player who did the same thing last year (shot self in chest).
That's not the issue. Depression affects everyone in all walks of life and, no matter how much that's "great" you have going on around you and in your life, everything is hopeless and dark.
Suicidal people aren't irrational. They're just miserable and are put in a position that they feel as though that's the only way to make the pain go away.
he always fronted like he was a happy guy in his interview that loved to surf and whenever i watched sunday night football that was always the narrative. rip... everyone with eyes knew that there was something not quite right there.
i didnt realize that team had 8 guys who are now dead... that is absolutely horrifying. and those of us who DONT deal with depression or another mental issue really have no basis to say shit, i have no idea how hard it is to deal with things when they are that bad, and i dont want to know. but i do know that its bad enough that many many people choose to end their lives. its more than just being a pussy and when those of us who really dont understand it go and talk about it like you aer a pussy if you cant overcome depression it does nothing but cause more people to NOT get the help they need.
I loved him as a player and feel bad for his family, but not for him. If he truely was having problems, he could have done so much more good for himself and other older players being alive and talking to the public than being a corpse donated to science. Props for saving his brain, but thumbs down for taking the easy way out. He was a religious man, and I don't know any religion which allows suicide. A great player to remember, a family to feel sorry for, but I won't take pity on him. Say what you want... I sleep good at night
There are a few non JETS players that I absolutely love to watch. Seau was one. Just his vigor and love of the game then, to top it off he was said to be an incredible individual off the field. We lost a great one... r.i.p. #55
