He's like Cotchery...its not a matter of if he will survive NYC(I think he's smart and humble enough to not get devoured), its a matter of if he will be down with Rex's type of coaching. But Cotchery got the Rex of 09-11....the 13 Rex that we saw was a far different, more humble type of coach so I don't think have any qualms about whether Matthews will dig Rex Ryan or not.
I'm as big a Matthew's fan around, maybe JTJ is a bigger fan, but I would be hard pressed to pass on Lee. I'm not as high on Benjamin as some, he's still a little too raw, but has a huge ceiling.
WW85 you know better than anybody players fall and rise come draft time, i don't even bother saying whether players are first lock guarantees anymore because you never know. For whatever reason he might stay exactly where he is right now and thats a 2nd round projection even with everything that you just mentioned. Its impressive that he asked for tape though it shows his commitment and determination. Either way we grab 2 WRs high this draft.
Lee has stardom written all over him. The question is whether he can stay healthy and not be hindered by nagging injuries. If I had to take one player in the entire draft class that I thought was really predictable as a plus player it would be Lee. Jake Matthews would be second on that list.
While I agree you never know for certain, I'm expecting a sharp rise in Matthew's stock. If I had to bet now, I think one of the current playoff teams will be right where Matthew's gets drafted. I just don't see a lot of teams in need of WR in Rd 1. We are still just under 4 months out so a lot will change. Some player will have a Gholston rise in the combine.
BTW, watching the Playoff game....somebody here mentioned the comparison of Jordan Matthews to Keenan Allen....very good comp.
Allen was a 3rd round pick. Look at what the talent in the draft looks like this year. Then look at what the WR talent in the draft looks like. I think Matthews is a real talent but he's got 3 or 4 people ahead of him at the position and probably close to 30 ahead of him overall. You have to be pretty sure he's going to succeed if you reach for him at 18.
Allen was regarded as a late 1st round pick but dropped due to a knee injury. If he was healthy, he would have been a 1st round pick (similarly to Gronkowski who you love to bring up as a 2nd round pick).
Keenan Allen straight beasted tonight, if he was chosen instead of winters wow this draft would have been amazing.
I wanted Allen as well in the 3rd round, it is what it is. I also wanted Larry Warford (had him as my guard choice this past draft in a lot of my mocks), but he went a few picks ahead of us in the 3rd round too.
I like the idea of pairing Matthews with either Cooks, Benjamin or Beckham. That is if we dont add a receiver in FA.
I know how much most here hate trading up but I've gotta suggest it again. Amaro/Ebron at 18 then tack the Bucs 3rd rounder (or ours preferably) to get the 4th or 5th Best WR in the class at the end of round 1/beginning of the 2nd. Matthews could be the guy in that scenario and that would be a realistic way to bring in a huge haul with the first two picks. Actually if the comp picks are good enough I kind of like the idea of then trading up the remaining third with a couple comp picks to get the 7th-10th WR in the class too. Sign Asamoah and Ward/Byrd, resign Barnes and Pace. That fully capitalizes on the WR depth in the class, and makes the rest of the team completely stacked, leaving only the open Geno question. The downside would be starting 2 rookie WRs but that could turn into a strength by 2015/16. I know the double dip WR trade up won't happen, but it seems interesting and the first trade up seems like a viable and realistic option.
In a perfect world, Jets would trade down, and take Matthews. Really don't see the benefit of trading up. I just hope we come away with at least 1 good WR prospect.
One way of doing it would be to trade down the 18 if the big three are gone and take the second TE in the mid 20's then use the fruits of the trade down to overload on WR in the 2nd and 3rd. So Jace Amaro in the mid-20's and then 2 guys out of Benjamin, Robinson, Cooks, Matthews, Landry and Adams on the Jets 2nd and the Bucs 3rd. That leaves the Jets with 2 more 3rd round picks (their own plus the trade down), 2 4th round picks (inc. a likely comp pick), 2 5th round picks (inc. a comp pick), 2 6th round picks (including a comp pick) and a 7th round pick to rebuild the depth chart. That's one way to get healthy in a hurry and add some quality play makers.
you can't trade comp picks, also if you meant Asomugha than you are wanting some terrible things for this team. I'd take Cro with a bum hip again next year over Asomugha. As far as your first round suggestion goes, if you take Ebon/Amaro at 18, how did you plan to trade up to the bottom of the first round? You want to trade up using our second and one of our thirds to get a WR? I just think with the depth at WR this year I would wait till the second and take the best WR available, address another need(G,S,OLB)with one 3rd and take another WR with the other 3rd.
If Tanny was still around I could anticipate a few trades, I'm not expecting any trades with Idzik in charge, he will have the draft come to him. Most of our drafting issues have been for the lack of picks and depth on our roster.....I don't see any trading up happening.
