You are as big of an idiot as I have ever seen on a MB. I posted the #s that were provided in the article that I provided a link for. I said LAST year Thomas was better but overall Porter is BY FAR the better player- you want to disagree w/ that? Leave me alone, go whack off to Adalius Thomas in private, I have heard enough of your crap.
Yeah, it should be a very interesting season in the AFC East. As far as Porter signing with the Dolphins, whatever. We probably would have had to pay more to get him. I think we will be fine without him.
My mistake boss!!! Thomas is actually making between 15 - 20 million guaranteed!!! He is in fact prolly making less then Porter. Thomas can play 5 defensive positions well. He is bigger, stronger and faster then Porter. He can play in the 3.4 and the 4.3. More versitile, and on the upswing. Porter was a good player from 2000 - 2002. Since then he dropped off, and has had mutiple issues off the field. You can think Porter is the better pick up. Only problem is the entire NFL and anyone who has touched a football might disagree with ya! Well with the exception of the homers. Btw Thomas has been a better plater for the last three years. 28 sacks to porters 24. 188 tackles to Porters 115, etc etc. With Thomas having the ability to make 9 million a season in San Fran, and ending up making less then Joey Porter, on a team with the best front three in foootball, you look moronic bashing a good deal. Have a nice day.
Thomas is actually making $20-$22 mil in guaranteed money. he can play 5 diff positions my ass, he's a LB that's what he's being paid to play. No he can't cover WRs, b/c he did so on a play or 2 does not mean he can on a regular basis. Anyone w/ half an IQ point in regards to football knows Porter has been the MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better player. Thomas was better LAST year, Thomas had a career year LAST year(in a contract year no less, hmmmmm.) and he still wasn't much better than Porter who had a down year. YOU are a homer, it's obvious you are a Pats fan the way you are gushing about every move they make. You make Wes Welker sound like Jerry Rice.
He proved he can play five different positions well. Watch some tape on him genious. Watch the Ravens bengals game. The ravens used him all over the field all year. Did you ever watch him play? Did you see him man to man with Chad Johnson at times? Total numbers have Thomas the better player over the last three years, btw. Cant say im surprised tho, you had Porter making 10 million LESS then Thomas, lol. In reality Porter is making MORE then Thomas. You just wanted a chance to jump all over a team who made a good move. I am a jets fan.. I call it like I see it, it was a good move. Porter is clearly on the downswing while Thomas is clearly on the upswing. Although you know more then 2 of the most succesfull talent evaluators in football. Funny to, because the entire nfl ( analysts, reporters, coaches) are saying what a great move this was.. How good of price they got him for, considering he could have made almost 10 million a season in SF. One last time just to clarify Porter 20 million Thomas 15 - 20 million - Globe, as off today... :breakdance:
The irony of this statement is halarious. I do not think Wess Welker is Jerry rice. I think he is a good young player with a ton off upside. The same thing most scouting reports have on him. He has great hands, great speed and is versitile. He will be very effective in the slot. Right now he is a young troy Brown. A guy who played for the patriots for 14 years. One of there best investments to date. He is going to retire. Claiming Welker playing with the likes of Joey harrington and in Miami Florida did not hamper his development is foolish. He destroyed the pats when they played them. When he is paired with Brady he will be the new Dion Branch for them. Branch never got over 1000 yards in receptions. Yet he is in Seattle making 6 million a year. So they went out and signed Welker to fill his role for 1.8 mill a season. How are the pats previous second round picks doing? Bethel Johnson, Chad Jackson? How they playing these days? Young player, nfl playing time, good hands, explosive and versitile. He will thrive in that system. They had 29 million to spend and are filling holes. They also have two first round picks and will continue to build through the draft. That is on top of the 4 extra 4th rounders they have this year. They already have built there core, just because the jets are 6 years behins dont trash them for making moves. they still have plaenty of cap space, your dreams of cap hell are just that.... Wait until the salery cap increases again. Here is a SI link praising the Welker trade. As well as the Jones trade by the jets. Every opinion I have heard on the Welker move was posotive one. Only neg on here. get ready to be Dio branched to death. branch is getting 6 million while never going over 1000 yards. He was also worth a frist round pick when they let him go. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/don_banks/03/06/liked.disliked/index.html
I had Porter getting $10 mil less b/c that is what was reported, check the link I provided. Here's a link to show $20 mil for Thomas and I have seen as high as $22 mil. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/peter_king/03/04/thomas/index.html
That article must be wrong because Porter is getting 20 million guaranteed I posted that king article before. I have never seen a report of over 20 million. Since the contract is private we will never know for sure. All I know is the Boston Globe has the number between 15 and 20. Judging by the contract construction it could not be over 20. I will leave you alone tho, as I do not want to piss you off. Dolphins agree to five-year deal with LB Porter NFL.com wire reports MIAMI (March 6, 2007) -- Joey Porter has agreed to a five-year, $32 million contract with the Miami Dolphins, making the former second-team All-Pro linebacker the first marquee player to join the club during this free agent period. Porter is guaranteed $20 million in the deal, which was agreed to late March 5, according to a person with knowledge of the discussion who requested anonymity because Porter has not yet passed his physical and the contract may not be signed until March 7 or 8.
i understanbd that and I have acknowledged that. I posted my thoughts after the initial #s came out, now I don't think it is a great deal like I thought yesterday morning. I have seen as much as $22 mil, I don't remember where but at worst he got $20 not $15. Branch got $13 mil in guaranteed money, Welker is getting 10. There's not much difference but there is alot of difference in their play. Branch's last year in NE he was just under 1,000 yds and had almost 80 recs w/ a 13 yd per catch average and 5 TDs. Welker's best year in 2006 he had 67 recs for under 700 yds(putrid 10 yds per rec average) w/ just ONE TD which is also his ONLY TD in 3 years. Branch last year had a few less recs BUt had more yds, a 3+ yd better avg. and had 4 TDs or 3 more than Welker in his career. The 2 are not comparable. Bramnch is not a great WR but he is a pretty good one, Welker is nothing more than a #3 WR and to give up $10 mil guaranteed AND a 2nd and 7th rd pick is ludicrous. Welker "destroyed" the Pats? he had a nice game in their loss in october when he caught 9 balls for 77 yds but in the 2nd game he had 1 rec for -1 yds. yeah he destroyed them. in '05 he had 2 recs for 61 yds and and 2 for 20. So in 4 games aginst NE Wes has 14 recs, 157 yds and NO TDs. That averages to 3.5 recs, 39 yds and ZERO TDs. Eugen wilson was ok, Bethel Johnson was a good STer, Deion Branch was good, how about Matt Light? So you'd rather have Wes Welker than Branch or Matt Light? The explosion on Wes to average 10 yuds a rec is amazing, and his versatility to avg 22 yds a KR and 9 yds a PR- these are things we have never seen before. I take it back, the Pats should ahve given up their entire draft for this gem. The media praises EVERY move the Pats make whether it's a draft pick, a trade or a FA signing. I don't care what they think, I have watched these players play and I have watched NE operate in the past to know they are straying from their successful system.
By The Associated Press Wed Mar 7, 2:15 PM ET http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070307/ap_on_sp_fo_ne/fbn_nfl_rdp;_ylt=AhFf6z23MxUYCnh7LlVOkuPIyLQF Joey Porter opposite Jason Taylor in Miami's pass rush is a pretty potent combination. Cam Cameron, the Dolphins' new coach, certainly likes that pairing. His team gave Porter, released by Pittsburgh last week, a five-year, $32 million contract with $20 million guaranteed, according to a person with knowledge of the discussion who requested anonymity because Porter had not yet passed his physical. ADVERTISEMENT Defensive end Taylor was the league's top defensive player in 2006. Now he'll have the playmaking, albeit inconsistent, Porter helping from outside linebacker. The Dolphins will be without two starting defensive linemen from last season, tackle Dan Wilkinson, traded to Denver and end Kevin Carter, who signed with Tampa Bay. Porter's 60 sacks rank fourth in Steelers history. Another linebacker from the AFC North, Brian Simmons, left Cincinnati for New Orleans on Tuesday. He was the 17th overall pick in the 1998 draft. Oakland agreed with two-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman Jeremy Newberry on a $1.5 million, one-year contract. Newberry, a Pro Bowler in 2001-02 with San Francisco, spent all of last season on injured reserve with the 49ers with a damaged left knee. He has played in only 11 games the past three seasons because of various injuries. But the Raiders are counting on him to help an offensive line that allowed a league-worst 72 sacks last season. "When this opportunity presented itself, I made it known that I wanted to play across the Bay for the Raiders, as I have a ton of respect for Al Davis and this organization," Newberry said. "I'm very excited about what coach (Lane) Kiffin has got going and I am excited to be reunited with some people that I have worked with in the past." Newberry, who turns 31 this month, has played center, tackle and guard in the past and could be used in any of those spots with Oakland. The Raiders also cleared up salary cap room by restructuring the contracts of running back LaMont Jordan and receiver Ronald Curry. The new deal with Jordan reduces the $4.75 million roster bonus he was due on Wednesday by $1.75 million. Curry signed a five-year deal that could be worth up to $20 million and includes $5 million in guaranteed money. In other moves Tuesday: _Tampa Bay signed offensive tackle Luke Petitgout, released by the New York Giants after starting 106 games for them since being drafted in the first round in 1999. _Kansas City signed linebacker Napoleon Harris, who played two years in Minnesota after being traded there by Oakland in the deal for Randy Moss. _The Chicago Bears and New York Jets finalized their trade for running back Thomas Jones. He joins the Jets and gives Cedric Benson a clear shot at Chicago's starting job. _San Francisco signed former New England linebacker Tully Banta-Cain, the fifth free agent it has signed since the signing period began last Friday. _Baltimore re-signed running back Musa Smith, who has been injured during most of his four seasons with the Ravens. _Carolina released backup quarterback Chris Weinke, a former Heisman Trophy winner. Weinke struggled when he replaced injured starter Jake Delhomme in three games late last season, throwing two touchdown passes and four interceptions. He had a passer rating of only 67.4. _New England re-signed Larry Izzo, who has been to the Pro Bowl three times as a special teams player. _The Vikings signed wide receiver Bobby Wade, who caught 33 passes for 461 yards and two touchdowns last season for Tennessee. He spent the first three years of his career with Chicago. Wade also returns kicks. _Pittsburgh signed restricted free agent punter Andy Lee to an offer sheet. The San Francisco 49ers have a week to match the offer and keep Lee. If they don't, the Steelers must send a sixth-round draft pick to the 49ers as compensation.
The mantra here is Trust Mangini and Tannenbaum. We have faith that they know what they are doing. Bellichick has won 3 super bowls.. i have to believe that he has earned the benefit of the doubt with these type of moves. He obviously sees something in Wes Welker.
Welker is the next Troy brown. A guy who played for the pats for 14 years. That dude is also comparing Welker to Branch in Branch's most current nfl season.Playing with one of the nfl's best qb's. I was comparing the two at the same time in there careers. There is 1 yard difference in there average at that point. Welker returns kicks to boot. Welker has only been playing for 2 years. I guess there is no difference being in the leauge 3 years and comparing career stats to a guy who has been in the leauge for 6 years. A guy who played with one of the greatest qb's ever. A qb proven to make recievers better. The last few picks made by the pats in the second round turned out to be useless. Johnson, Jackson..... The pats obviously saw something in this guy and wanted him. So instead of taking a role of the dice (where they have been unlucky with second round recievers) they grabbed a guy they wanted. They have two first rounders and nine picks total. they are not building there team all over anymore, they are looking for specific cogs. The pats lost the second round pick signing him, since he was a rfa either way. Of course BB see's something in the kid. The armchair qb's around her spout off because they need something to bash. I bet you my life Welker turns out to be a Dion Branch/Troy Brown for them, which = very valuable. He has a ton of upside in that system. They netted a first round pick for Dieon by the way. Kraft threw in the seventh rounder to smooth things over for the poisen pill provision in the Welker deal. That pick means shit to them. They have already built there core. They also have 9 picks this year including 2 first rounders. 2 of there four compensation picks are fourth round picks. They get another one for Dave G, but I think that is a 6th rounder since he was hurt this year. Welker keeps Maroney/Hobbs from returning kicks. He is against the cap for 1.3 this year. He will get 2 a year for the next 5 years. If he replaces Brown he will be worth every cent to them. I mean honestly look at the salery players are getting these days. The cap is going up, everything is going up. I cannot wait until the jets need to go out and grab a good player to fill a hole in the fa market down the road. The salerys will only go up as the cap grows. if you need a cog now, you go get it. Since we are building we are not in that stage. We need to use the draft to form our core. They need a versitile jack of all trades to work in the slot and make plays. I have watched him play, and think he is a great pickup. If you think Welker playing on that abizmal Miami team with Joey Harrington did not hold him back, you are high. I think I will trust BB's judgement. A guy who had a part in 5 superbowl wins. 3 in Ne and 2 with the Giants. That dude is the same guy throwing around false numbers just so he could try to bash the Thomas pickup by the pats. Which anyone with a brain knows was a great one (for there needs). Every list praising the Jones deal (by us) had the Thomas deal listed as a great one also. The Boston globe has Thomas getting 15 - 20 (credible source) gauranteed. We will say 20 for the sake of argument. A great pickup in todays contract market with the amount of space they have. Especially since Thomas could have made 9 plus million in SF, and how versitile he is in the 3.4. Either way the most he is geting is 20 based on credible sources. I posted a article confirming this actually. The globe has it at 18.5, but whatever. Most importantly the pats fill the hole they need to fill right now while the develope someone they draft. The pats still have 12 million in cap space after all the moves they made. I love how people act like the pats did not spend up to the cap on every year of there superbowl runs, they did. Only difference is this time is they had 30 million to spend and a sb caliber core built. They are no longer building all over. I cannot wait until draft day when they use there 9 picks... The comments should be funny. If the pats took Calvin Johnson I am sure someone would start a thread claiming Johnson sucked. The pats will come out of this offseason with over 5 - 12 million in cap space/ They will be in great cap shape for the long run, like they always are. Take a look at the cap hits on the Thomas deal, they are tiny. All the valid years are very small hits. Most there players are locked up and tendered for years to come. I am sure one of the best teams at managing the cap will forget how to. They went right up to the cap for all there sb's. This time they have 12 million after doing most everything in fa they needed to. I love how the jets forget where there head coach came from. I love who mentored him. I also love how the jets are a carbon copy of the patriots in 2001. Go after all there old players, coaches etc etc. If you say the pats are idiots, you are making fun of yourself. Unless you think Mangini is an idiot, you know since he was a patriot and all.
After Their 1st 3 years in the league: Branch: 135 recs, 1746 yds, 12.9 avg., 9 TDs, 21 recs 20+, 4 recs 40+, 89 recs for 1st downs. Welekr: 96 recs, 1121 yds, 11.6 avg., 1 TD, 15 recs 20+, 2 40+, 53 1st downs. Are they really comparable? Wayne Chrebet and Dedric ward both reutnred putns at one point in their careers and were terrible at it, did that give them a plus over other WRs just b/c they did it? Welker averaged 22 yds a KR last year, that is HORRIBLE. He averaged 9 yds a PR, that is not good. he is a below average return man. Just so you know a year ago NE's PR, Kevin Faulk, averaged 10.6 per PR and their KR, Laurence Mauroney, averaged 28 yds a return. Those are HUGE differences from 22 and 9. he's been in the league 3 years, the fact that he wasn't able to play much as a WR in 2004 is a knock against him b/c of how bad Miami was in 2004. You make t sound like b/c they made a bad pick here or there that somehow means from here on out every 2nd rd pick will be bad so you might as well get rid of them. They have had some good 2nd rd picks too and some good 7th rd picks. average WRs like Welker are always available, you don't spend $10 mil guaranteed and send 2 picks to a team for a guy like that. Sure his #s will go up but they better go WAY up, he better put up better #s than reche Caldwell did last year to justify this trade and that's likely not going to happen b/c of the way Brady spreads the ball around. Here we go again, I POSTED A LINK TO AN ARTICLE THAT SAID HE WAS GETTING $12 MIL IN GUARANTEES unlike you who keeps insisting Thomas got $15 mil even though you have seen multiple reports of $20. I don't bash or praise based on hether I like a tam. No poster here has praised NE more in the past 5-6 years than I have, I praise when I like moves I bash when I don't and I usually turn out to be correct. I remember last year being bashed at every boatrd about the daunte Culpepper trade. I said Daunte wasn't good and it was a bad trade but everyone thouht Daunte was as good as his fantasy #s indicate but he has never been a great QB and it was obvious Miami was making a bad trade. I also have prasied Miami THIS offseason, I think they also overpaid a bit for Porter but they got the better player and a leader plus they got a hesit getting a 2nd and 7th rd pick for a #3 WR and they also got a better K and rid themselves of underachieving, wife beating Randy McMichael. When teams do things I like I'll praise them, when they don't I'll bash them. That goes for the jets too, I would have bashed the contract if we paid $20 mil for Adalius Thomas, I think we paid a little too much for Coleman BUT I'd rather overpay at $6 mil than $20 mil. What football fans don't understand is Championships are built through the draft not FA and the tams that collect the most FAs usually aren't very good. Everyone will say NE has done a great job just like they always go gaga for Washington's FA's. Last year we LOST mawae, Abraham AND Law and we signed guys totaling $6 mil in guarantees and we went on to win 10 games. It's about wise decisions not about how much money you spend. We are doing it the way the Pats did it when they were building and maintaining a Championship team. We are doing it the proven way in this era, NE has shifted their philosphy- can you now see why I am excited at what they are doing?
No they didnt! This is the first time they have had a lot of money to spend(through smart cap maitnence). They are a different team now. Corey Dillon retired, sothey went out and signed sammy morris to replace him. Maroney is the feature back now, a guy they got in the draft. Troy Brown is going to retire, they went out and grabbed Welker, a guy who brings the exact same skill set and can work in the slot. Graham walked to make 15 million in denver so they went out to grab a blocking tight end in brady. There former rookie Thomas is really emerging for them. They already have watson locked up. They where in immediate need of a hybrid type lineback o they went out and picked up a great player to fill the hole immediatly, while they draft and develope a guy. What would you like them to do? Stare at there 30 million in cap space? You keep failing to relize the pats spent up to the cap every single year they where buiding and maintaning there team during the sb runs. Look it up. They still have 13 million dollars left (including Asanti being franchised). They are not just signing random players. They now have 9 draft pick including two first rounders and will draft like they normally do. They are not getting away from anything, there is no way they could have filled those immediate holes through the draft. You expect them to draft a rb, a lb, a corner, a versitile Brown type guy, 2 recievers and a te, on top of there depth needs? You expect them to toss guys in certain places and be certain they porform. You expect rookies to fill certain holes in one of the most complicated systems in football. They replaced guys woh retired, they are not signing random people. They are not going away from anything they do. They spent up to the cap every single year they won a sb. ALl those in house guys they spent on are under contract now. Richard Seymour, Warren, Wiflrok etc etc. They will take there 9 picks and draft like they always do.
Just b/c you have cap room doesn't mean you have to use it. They are overpaying for players, something they haven't done before. I LOVE the Sammy Morris signing to replace Dillon, I like the Kyle Brady signing but wes Welker is NOT Troy Brown and Wes Welker types are easy to find- you don't need to spend $10 mil guaranteed and a 2nd and 7th rd pick to get a guy like that. Why don't they use some cap space to keep some of their own guys? Why are they spending so much on Adalius Thomas when they could have locked up Asnate Samuel for less? When they spent in the past it was on their OWN guys not on FAs and they still lowballed those guys. Now they see them giving out all this money to good, not great, players and it's going to affect them. I think thye have 6 picks left not 9, they had 8 before the Welker trade at least according to nfl.com. They are going to draft like they always do? You said they gave up the 2nd rounder b/c they id so poorly w/ them in recent years so will we get more poor draft choices?
Nfl.com did not include the 4 compensation picks thet have from players leaving. They have nine total this year (including the Welker deal). The free agent market dictates how much a player gets. Graham just got 15 million gaurenteed from Denver. You cannot honestly tell me he is worth that. The market is changing. I think they spent on Thomas, but considering what he can do for him, how they worked the deal, and how much cap space they have, I think it was a great move. Considering Thomas could have gotten 9 million plus in SF, I think they did pretty good. Miami just payed 20 mill for Porter. Everyone is getting money. If they draft smart at the lb position,I think they made the right move. How much do you think T Jones is going to make???? Chump change??? He will see what the other backs are getting and we will pay accordingly. As for Asanti, he was a decent player before this year. He had a breakout year (on a contract year, as you would say) Did you remeber him on "jacked up" all the time last year? He just saw how much money Clements got. They prob offered him a fair deal, and Asanti prob feels like he can get more. None of us know for sure. We have no idea, they apparently are negotiating with him. They will draft a corner this year for depth either way, and if it does not work out with Asanti they will trade him. They made one big move on a guy that will really help them. A guy BB spent the entire pro bowl scouting. I think they made a good one. We will agree to disagree on Welker, they obviously love him for whatever reason. Btw ,they used all there cap space last year to keep all there guys. There entire roster with the exception of Asanti is under contract. The first year the pats won the superbowl they signed 24 free agents. They used free agency to plug holes they needed to immediatly fill this year. Some roles need a vet not a rookie. You cannot possibly expect to fill every hole you have in the draft. Look for them to take a lb or de, a corner, a saftey and wr's in the draft. They still have 13 million in cap space(including Asanti being franchised), they are hardly spending it just to spend it. All moves are calulated and have a motive in there system. Either way, they spent all there cap money on all there superbowl wins. They are going to have considerable cap space left this year. They do not have to worry about tendering there own players , they are already all locked up. They will draft wr's, but even if they go out and grab a established guy, they will finish with no less then 8 - 10 million in cap space. If they are done in a they will have made all there moves and still be 13 million under the cap. That is still more then a lot of teams started with.
