All it shows is that it wasn't a horrible pick compared to the other RBs that were out there and that it was a weak draft class for RBs (at least so far). The argument whether you believe the Jets should have drafted McKnight over getting rid of Woodhead doesn't get answered by that. Personally, I think that McKnight has much more potential than Woodhead will ever have. It's a matter of if he will achieve it. Anyway, we'll see what happens going forward.
The bulk of my argument is showing what everyone else has done. ...and the majority of thoe players have done close to nothing. People were bitching about this pick mainly because of McKnight's lack of production. Do you really think any of these other mid-round backs could do any better?
I have no idea what the other backs would have done, I just don't put as much stock as you into running all over Toronto.
I didn't have a problem with where he was drafted, I didn't like trading Leon for a 5th round pick and letting Woodhead go. Watching Woodhead tear it up for New England of all teams while McKnight did virtually nothing was irritating, but McKnight obviously worked hard to get on the field at least for the last game, which makes it a bit more liveable. We got through the season with two RBs, thankfully, now we are where we are and hopefully if we need a 3rd RB we finally have one who is ready to go.
From what you posted it appears as if you're pointing out what the other backs did with some knocks against them, then pointing out McKnights stats for the year and saying he's a steal. The overwhelming majority of those stats are from the Bills game. What am I missing?
I had no problem with the Leon trade but I never would have cut Woodhead to keep Clowney or Patrick Turner. Woodhead is perfect for the Pats system but I doubt he would have much success on many other teams. I also think with his size that his career won't last very long. Notice how the Pats always try to get him in space and he rarely runs between the tackles from non spread formations. The ideal situation would have been to kept Woodhead around this year and use him sparingly and then next year he would be the third back behind Greene and Mcknight.
I didn't knock any of those players. I just mentioned the situations they were in. A lot of posters were claiming he's done nothing - I was just showing them that he's on par or better than almost everyone else. Whether you want to admit it or not, this pick was a hell of a bargain. This is a kid that was named the high school athlete of the decade. This is a kid that was one of the most highly touted recruits of the decade. He doesn't get compared to Reggie Bush because he played ball at USC. He's compared to him because of the way he plays. You said earlier that you don't put any stock into him running all over the Bills, right? I don't care who he was playing against. All the matters is this: he showed us that he's starting to tap into that potential and that he's here to make plays.
Not butthurt that he's gone, but I honestly think if Woodhead was still a Jet, he'd still be sitting on the bench with occasional ST work. He doesn't fit the style the Jets go for, while he's good as the Pats APB which they've used so much under Belicheeeck. Plus the Jets invested more in McKnight, they weren't gonna cut a 4th rounder over the UDFA. I would rather have Woodhead @ the Pats than McKnight there in I had to choose. If they tapped into McKnight's full potential, that would be very scary...
It's nice to see him do well. I'd love to see him do well, and I'd love to stop hearing people cry about losing woodhead because we kept him. I have no problem admitting if he was a hell of a pick, I'm just not ready to make that decision one way or another because he pissed on the Bills.
It didn't help that McKnight came into camp supposedly out of shape. So he had to shake that, re-gain the trust of the coaching staff after almost being cut...then earning time on special teams and becoming a good gunner on that. His Bills performance gained trust that he's indeed ready to contribute IMO but he still has LT and Greene to leapfrog and I don't see that this playoff run unless someone gets hurt.
there is no point in trying to convince those who are already convinced. i am sure had he had a different game in the end of the year this thread wouldnt exist. he played very well in special teams coverage and that is what his job is at the moment. hopefully he continues to work hard and doesnt act like the turd that he did in preseason and can become something in the league. if not oh well its only a 4th round pick and his contract isnt big... as bart scott said he probably took a pay cut. the thing for us to talk about is the fact that he is consistently involved in special teams, he seems to always be standing in front of the punt returner not allowing him to get a return, THAT is huge for this team.
McKnight earned this start with his special teams play. Like Tannenbaum said, he got himself out of the dog house. I want to let everyone in this thread know this: I do not expect him to be a major contributor until around 2012. He's not going to pass Greene and LT on the depth chart. I think his workload will increase a lot next season, but he'll still be our third option at running back.
His role as a gunner will be very important this Saturday, Manning is still gonna be able to move the ball even without Clark and Collie. We will move the ball as well. The thing is if he has to go 85-90 yards to get 6 every time it'll make it more difficult
I'm a huge Hardesty fan. The guy can't stay healthy. Hardesty had Round 1 potential if he stayed on the field.
What now? what has he done? he had a good game in a glorified preseason game last week against the worst run D in the league. I wasn't upset we drafted him(I was upset w/ the leon trade) but he still has alot to prove. he finally showed us something buit there's a long way to go. against the worst run D in what was essentially an exhibition game. I hope it's a sign of things to come but he ahs alot to prove. No, if he was earning playing time he would have played months ago. LT hasn't been the same since october, our run game has not been great this year. If he earned PT he would have been getting touches. He hasn't had a meaningful touch on offense and he's on par w/ the other backs? if the game meant anything to us he wouldn't have seen the field on offense.
