Fuck no, we can't. Yes of course. You're right. I think the fan base is very down right now (myself included) because the expectations were higher than this. I expected us to be turning the ball over a lot and getting ramrodded on defense in the run game, but I also expect us to be moving the ball pretty well. The offense has no identity and I can't identify a single offensive player that's looked good (maybe Michael Carter?). And I don't think the defense is playing all that well at all, I just think teams are passively throwing the ball underneath and being patient because they know scores will come as we can't score period.
they will all be back of course because Woody Johnson has to pay them either way but we will still be waiting for that "build" part of "rebuild"
I'm fine with saying JD should've been more aggressive in FA. Guys like Linsley and Feiler come to mind for me and they're both playing really well for the Chargers. Linsley probably wouldn't have came as he got a huge deal from the Chargers but we could've outbid them for Feiler who would be a solid upgrade over GVR. I disagree on the trade up portion though. AVT has been solid for a rookie who had to sit out basically all of pre-season. I know PFF grades are not the best metric to go off of, but surprisingly GVR has a better grade (53.9) than half of the people we would've taken in the 3rd round. 1st round: traded 23rd, Darrisaw is yet to take a snap for the Vikings, so he's currently an N/A, lets say we would've taken Landon Dickerson or Teven Jenkins. Dickerson has a 47.0 grade, Jenkins underwent back surgery so he's also an N/A. I don't see how any of these upgrade our OL immediately though. 3rd round: traded 66 and 86, so I went all the way to the end of the 3rd. Jalen Mayfield (drafted 68th/35.9 grade), Brady Christensen (70th/48.0), Wyatt Davis (86th/hasn't played a snap), Kendrick Green (87th/55.0), Spencer Brown (93rd/81.0), Ben Cleveland (94th/66.7), Robert Hainsey (95th/hasn't played a snap), Quinn Meinerz (98th/55.7). Only guy I see as a massive upgrade over GVR is Ben Cleveland and I'm not sure we would've taken him as he seems better suited for a Power/Gap scheme, which is probably why he's doing so well with Baltimore. Instead of AVT, we could've had Darrisaw, then 2 of Davis/Green/Cleveland/Meinerz, doubt we take either of those OT's (Christensen & Brown) since we took Darrisaw. Considering you would've gotten 0 production from Darrisaw up to this point, I don't see how our OL is any better if we don't trade up for AVT.
I am not just talking about hiring a new head coach. I am talking about the rebuild which is what we are comparing. The Rams, Cardinals, and Browns all started their rebuild before hiring a new head coach. You can not make an exact comparison between us and them as every team is entirely different. Our rebuild began the year Douglas took over and starting purging the roster. We hired an entirely new coaching staff this year. They are 3 games into their tenure and JD is on his second year. By the comparisons, year 3 is next year and should be a big year for us in free agency and the draft.
We didn't start our rebuild last year when we had Gase and dealt Jamal Adams away (right move)? It's literally the same situation. NFL franchises turn things around quickly. They usually do it by fixing the offensive line and maximizing the players strengths that are already on the roster. Not blowing up the entire thing like an MLB or NHL team would if they're out of contention that year. We took a Washington Nationals style rebuild approach in the wrong sport to do that. Especially now that we won't play Crowder, we're forcing Maye to not play because we don't want to pay him and shoving him out. And we still haven't fixed the offensive line.
Well, it was a two year contract and last year Robby annihilated his replacement Perriman as far as production. This year JD actually spent more on Davis, and I thought solved this problem, but unfortunately Davis has not lived up to the billing. Just too man drops. It's obvious letting Robby go was a mistake and it is disappointing that WR production is still a problem.
The Jets just hate to keep any good players around..it's pathetic We should give JD a mask and oxygen tank for his dumpster dives to save some pennies off the Cap Time to change strategy or at least modify it a bit imo
People misinterpret the JD comment on not understanding Robbie's market. JD and the Jets thought Anderson was going to draw a high value offer and so they never made a serious offer to him in the range that the Panthers finally offered - which was 2 years and $20M. If the Jets had known that his market was as limited as it turned out to be they likely would have made a 3 year/$30M type offer or a 4 year/$40M with last 1-2 years shaky and easily recoverable. Robbie's agent knew what the deal was and he likely would have accepted either of the offers above. That's what JD means about not understanding Robbie's market. Not that he was valued more than the Jets thought he was but that he was valued less. By the time Robbie hit free agency the bridges were all burned. The Jets hadn't made a serious offer to him and he was steaming out of town. If the Jets had made one of the offers above to Robbie it would have been easy for him to course correct and come back to the Jets when it became clear that the NFL valued him as a #2 WR not a #1.
THIS! A THOUSAND TIMES THIS!!!! I seriously don’t get the thinking that we shouldn’t be keeping players if they are not like the top at their position. It’s the underlying logic of why we let a productive player like Robbie go for nothing. It’s the same logic underlying why we’ll be letting another productive player like Maye go for nothing next year unless we actually trade him this year. It’s the same story over and over again with this team. and we always make stupid excuses. Keyshawn was MeShawn….yeah well you know what, he brought fire to our offense that was sorely missed when we got rid of him. Abraham was always hurt and was soft. Yeah well you know what, he went on to be a top rusher for Atlanta for years and we’ve not had one since. Revis was greedy. Adams was selfish. The list is exactly as long as the list of good players we drafted is. Granted it’s a short fucking list but the point remains. and I get that this list stretches across various GMs…the consistency is ownership. That’s a clue. and yes, in a vacuum any one of those may have made sense. So for example, I agreed with the Adams trade for this team at this time. But the problem is that it’s NOT in a vacuum. We also let go of Williams and Anderson and soon to be Maye. Great. We’re not “overpaying”. All well and good. But all we did was create more holes that needed to be filled. Williams was also a good move because Mac stupidly drafted the same position instead of going for an edge player to complement Williams. So yeah, in a vacuum, some of these moves make sense. But when you keep applying that approach you just deplete the team of talent overall. which is why we are treading water in a never ending “rebuild” that never goes anywhere
Again, I said that last year the rebuild started with JD and purging the roster. Next year would be year 3 and the second year with a new coaching staff and young QB. I am not disagreeing with you on the shit fest we've seen for the last decade. What I am claiming is that the argument that teams normally look better on year 3 is not always true and if you want to gauge the rebuild on that year, than that would be next season. And for the record, trading away Jamal Adams was absolutely the right move. Especially given how much we got in return and how much of a pain in the ass he has turned out to be. Not to mention his invisible play this year
I have to say I watched Lafluer's press conference yesterday. And I wasn't exactly inspired that better days are just around the corner. Even allowing for the fact that pretty much nothing he says is going to make things OK right at the moment his tone, body language, and just gives off the general vibe that your looking at someone who's in over his head and maybe a bit lacking in the humility department at the same time.
This is how he came off to me as well, that’s Adam Gase all over again! I said it before season started, if Mike Mcarthy was the HC and called out Becton in a presser, I wouldn’t like it but I would accept it because he has a quality NFL resume. When Lafleur called out Becton in public, the first thing I said was, who is this guy and what has he done in the NFL to think he has earned that right? We could be totally wrong and he will turn it around and put together one of the best offensive schemes we have seen, but the way it stands now, he’s on the express lane to losing his job.
A decent amount of people were predicting .500ish records even though there was all this talk of “patience” for a new CS, rookie QB, etc. Saleh himself said things will get worse before they get better, and nobody’s in a better position to say that than he is. So far he’s half right.
We’ll my worry is twofold 1. I think the mark of a great coach is the ability to maximize the talents of the players. I think it was Madden who would say someone like Lombardi could beat you with his guys, then switch teams and beat you again with your guys. That’s coaching. This stubbornness of holding The System above all else is not a good sign… 2. I REALLY hate this talk track that this system is SO complex that it takes three years to learn it. If that is true then it’s a fucking shit system. These are football players not Rhodes Scholars. I remember hearing the same shit from Paul Hackett. Not a good sign I realize we are only three games in, but 6 points per game average and a shutout is fucking wake up time. There is NO excuse for it to be this bad. I refuse to accept it and the team should too. Change the system. Create a few plays that Mims can run. Bench Davis for a series if he keeps dropping the ball. No idea what to do on OL but I swear I don’t see other teams leaving unblocked rushers while OL stand around looking at air even half as much as we see that on our team. Something is SERIOUSLY wrong with the OL. There are issues to fix EVERYWHERE on O, but it has to start with coaching.
Yea I’ve been thinking that there’s already a rift between LaFluer and the entire offense, perhaps aside of Zach. That may be part of the reason his teammates don’t seem very supportive at the moment. I’ve also stared thinking about how Zach spent so much time in the film room and I’m wondering if the offense, while having some similarity to what he ran in college, may still be a bit over his head. It just seems like LaFluer tried to install and entirely new and complex offense with young offensive personnel and no player continuity to help it along. He’s definitely in trouble.
