I am not someone that ever played sports at a high level - so if anyone on here has I would be interested to know how much a coach like harbaugh, that's the head coach, makes to the development of a prospect once they reach the college level - I mean he was already a 5 star recruit out of high school and rated as the 4th best QB prospect - so would he have been just as good with any other (competent) coach in place or was it down to Harbaugh? I've often wondered how much difference a coach makes and at what period does it have the most impact, because by the time they get to the NFL it seems like QBs are who they are

Agree totally. Coaching can make small adjustments which can have big impacts. However to make, or even attempt to make, a bigger change to someone's natural technique is a radical thing and will often take years and not be successful. You can make people worse, not better. As a coach it is better to work with someone's natural technique rather than alter it completely. Most of the time coaching is about small adjustments and ensuring thought processes are clear. I could absolutely see a Harbaugh helping in this area, but in my experience most development comes from the player themselves, recognising where they need to develop and doing the little things that ensure they improve. Every time you step up a standard you risk reaching your ceiling, there being some flaw that you can't overcome, no matter how hard you try. And sometimes players who are dominant at lower levels can't step up when those who look less gifted can. Some of it is mental.

Not a pro level player myself BTW, but am a qualified coach. My brother was a pro sportsman and this is based on a mix of my personal experience and his.

the jump from high school to the NFL is enormous.

Of course coaches develop players in college, it’s probably the biggest stage of development for any player that makes it as a successful player in the NFL because once they get there they have less time for fundamentals .

Christian Hackenberg was already a 5 star recruit out of high school higher ranked even than Andrew Luck, but he didn’t get developed by a guy like Jim Harbaugh, peaked and flamed out. And he’s definitely not the only example of that. The list is long

When are the Jets not used as leverage anymore? It’s comical in more ways than one.

“If you don’t give me what I want I’ll sign with the franchise where careers go to die”.

Agree coaching makes a huge difference in college and I think first couple years of pros. Looking at Russel Wilson and Geno Smith this year, Daniel Jones this year, I might say all through pros. Geno still has that I am completely lost and deserved to be punched in the jaw face after 10 yrs. Cannot believe Jets lost to that guy.

I was going to make a new thread for this but decided to just post it here. Mods can decide if it merits its own thread. This is a longshot idea, but I'll throw it out there:

    Bruce Arians.

There have been multiple reports - but none that include Arians' own words - that he misses coaching. Here's one from August of this year:

    https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.c...involved-in-coaching-buccaneers-quarterbacks/

My idea would be to offer Arians the OC job and to sign Brady for 1-2 years. Let Arians try to develop Zach into what the Jets thought he could be while Brady carries the team for a year or two. If necessary, I'd even offer Arians the HC job, and while Saleh would probably decline, offer him the DC job with the assurance that he takes over for Arians when Arians leaves.

I know it's more fantasy than reality, but I do think it has a lot of things going for it if they could pull it off.

that's a terrible idea imo. He's retired twice before and hasn't worked in a big market yet. He is also 70 years old.

I'm probably the bad guy in this but I wouldn't want him. Understand that there's probably not a scenario where Joe Douglas and Jim Harbaugh can exist under the same roof. Too much ego getting in the way. Joe Douglas was here first and what he wants should be the law. After all, isn't that what we were tearing Woody Johnson to shreds about two years ago? Let football people run the team. Take a step back Woody and start signing checks? This is to say nothing about Robert Saleh and it would show no loyalty whatsoever to a guy you knew you were hiring for the long term. JD must have loyalty to his hire or else nobody else would ever want to work for the Jets if they know they could be replaced on a whim. So I say no and trust me when I say I'm a BIG fan of Harbaugh. A couple of years ago? Hell yeah. Now? No........

Asking to pay Gruden CA$H for a guy who hasn't coached in the NFL in 9 years, and has only coached a total of 4 years, while Saleh is still under contract? What kind of jackass financial advisor would sign off to that? Woody doesn't have big bucks because he has made a habit of burning bills. And what's the guarantee that Harbaugh doesn't fail miserably, like Gruden did?

With those hideous dad pants Harbaugh wears, he belongs with the Walmart people in Denver. At least Saleh's tasteful sportswear apparel and modeling ability is in sync with NYC fashion. Didn't a fur coat clad Joe Namath teach the Jet faithful one has to both look and play the part? Put Harbaugh in a hi-end tailored suit and then we'll talk.
