I think you are confusing punting with punt coverage. Granted Lachlan does shank one now and then but he was top 10 in average punt, and #3 in punts inside the 20. A few shanks will come when the O doesn't move the ball and you have the second most punts in the league. Big problem was on coverage, ST gave up 9th highest return average.
Jets Likely To Sign Dan Bailey Yesterday it was announced that recently released kicker Dan Bailey would be traveling to New York for a workout with the Jets, and now it appears likely that the team will sign the former Cowboy. “Barring an unexpected poor workout, NYJ will offer Bailey a deal to sign and replace Jason Myers” sources to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News (Twitter link). Bailey, the second most accurate kicker in NFL history in terms of field goal percentage, was shockingly released by Dallas at final cuts. Bailey had been with the Cowboys since 2011, and besides an injury plagued 2017, had been one of the best kickers in the league. Myers appeared to have won the battle to be the Jets’ kicker but looks like he’ll now find himself out of a job once again. The Jets have cycled through kickers since Nick Folk left after the 2016 season, and could finally find some stability with Bailey. Whatever Bailey signs for, it will likely pay him top of the kicker market type money. It would be a nice upgrade this late in the proceedings for the Jets, and if New York fails to sign him several other teams will surely come calling.
The first thing to remember is that all of the players getting this second look were cut from other teams. So there's no reason to get a big woodie over any of them. If a solid kicker was important, the Jets would have hung on to Catanzaro, who did have a good year in 2017. And if, as mentioned above, salary is an issue for Bailey, that will conceivably get in the way, so again, no woodie yet. And if Perriman didn't fit in Baltimore, it's probably better to have him on the NYJ practice squad than trying out up in NE, where Brady has been successful with other castoffs at WR - and where it looks like they're hurting.
My bad, you're right. I read a couple of articles that stated that Bailey has been overused and that his body has been breaking down (his back and groin). The recommendation was to preserve his health better by using a kickoff specialist to save his body from overusage since he doesn't have a rocket leg to produce tons of touchbacks. With the special teams unit as bad as it's been under Boyer, I want Bailey if he's healthy. Just gotta keep him healthy so he resembles the 88% kicker instead of the 75% kicker that Myers could be anyway. Hope his workout goes well.
Given we're 20 mil under the cap today and 100+ next season why would a 3-4 mil K get in the way of anything. Why wouldnt we want someone as reliable as hes been on the team?
Attaochu has had a disappointing career. I really liked him in 2014 and thought he was a good OLB prospect. While not a bust, he certainly hasn't been all that good, at least in terms of pressuring the opposing QB. Still, he may be better than some of the guys we have. He's had 10 sacks in his 4-year career, with 6 of them coming in 2015. I think that's more than any Jet has put up during the last 4 years.
Good question. And so, why not stick with Catanzaro who's 27? Maybe he just wanted out of NY, threw out a number at MacC that he knew was too big, packed up the car and headed south. He is from South Carolina and played at Clemson, and signed with TB ... "Chandler Catanzaro signed a 3 year, $9,750,000 contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including $3,750,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $3,250,000." And I promise to let it go now
Considering we haven't had a real pass rush since John Abraham, he's certainly worth a look. And if it does play out, it's going to all be on him, because Rodgers doesn't seem able to figure anything out based on his time in NY.
Because he was paid too much for what he was? I dont know, he wasnt that good that to me hes a given. Or as you say, maybe he asked for too much and overplayed his hand. Id pay 3 mil or more for a historically good K over Catanzaro, who I never trusted totally
Believe me, Champ has gotten the message before too. People just don't take Champ seriously anymore and they expect Champ not to like anything regarding the Jets except a SB run at some nebulous point in the future. DWC is a returnee. Sneaking back in on a different user name. There's a few others around here that have done the same. Basically, we tolerate them but don't afford them the same protections we do our more legitmate users. Usually, they just move on but if they choose to be a pinata, that's on them. WE don't intervene unless we see it getting out of hand.
Unless things really change under Darnold, Bates, and Bowles, it might not be wise to sign Bailey. After all, Bowles likes to settle for FGs rather than go for TDs, so Bailey could be kicking a lot more for the Jets than he would be for the Cowboys. Then again, the Jets haven't scored all that many points with Bowles as HC, so maybe it would be safe to sign him.
Guess its harder to understand not knowing the background story and I'm making a number of assumptions. What Ive seen doesnt annoy me, then again I get the feeling that I'm often the homer, lol. I agree with the way you handle people and run the site. I do really like the way this site is run and moderated. Seems very fair. Thanks to all
But you are thinking salary was the sticking point when it has been reported the main reason was he didn't want to play in cold weather. Maybe the Jets could have thrown more money at him to get him to stay but let's not act like a less than middling kicker is hard to come by.
Its easy to assume that the way the team was run with a journeyman QB at the helm and with a different OC and a young QB in place who has a lot more ability than those journeyman QBs. Even without that I dont get the downside of having a top kicker on the team. How anyone thinks the team will be the same, unchanged and not benefit from a better K game and especially be an unwise move. No matter how many points we scored in the past Guess I'm not getting the downside to improving the roster at any position, even K
Geez, man, did you miss this part of that post? I already explained that he probably wanted to play in the south, and used salary as the excuse to get back there. "Maybe he just wanted out of NY, threw out a number at MacC that he knew was too big, packed up the car and headed south. He is from South Carolina and played at Clemson, and signed with TB ..." And now, back to the previously asserted "promise."
To each our own, however, i personally love the idea of landing one of the greatest NFL FG Kickers of All-Time. Karma, what karma? NFL players are traded away, released, cut and replaced all the time. It's business. And the whole objective is to create the best roster possible. And who the heck is Jason Myers in the first place? And how many games a Jet? And the reason for NY now being forced to remain loyal to him, is why? Not sure how you can say any of this. Dan Bailey (one of the greatest of All-Time) couldn't change the trajectory of this team an iota? Ill disagree and I'm also quite sure that the likes of N.E, Bill Belichick, Adam Vinatieri and a young Tom Brady would all disagree with your assessment of the importance of featuring an All-Time NFL great of a FG Kicker. Loyalty? How loyal were Jacksonville and Seattle to Jason Myers before then kicking him to the curb? Well luckily Football is not about a man finding love in a woman (and a girl has never once played a down of NFL play). But with your example if the hotter girl is also the 2nd best girl of All-Time at life (behind only Mother Teresa) well then it's to be considered as an upgrade. P.S: No Jets player within our locker room would lose any sleep over releasing "Jason Myers". Maybe because as a FG Kicker in Dan Bailey is only 30 years of age when in comparison to a punter in Shane Lechler who's currently 42 years old (and Lachlan Edwards graded out as a top 10 punter last year). You don't pass up on a kicker only 30 years of age who's rated as the NFL's 2nd most accurate kicker of All-Time - for a career journeyman in "Jason Myers" - you just don't. I'd rather my Jets front office show "loyalty" towards players with great on field performance (Bailey).
