My point is if you talk to and he won't redo his deal like he said he won't then you have no leverage.
I hate to give up known talent for a complete unknown, but we'd still be wasting a lot of money on Harvin that he doesn't deserve.
That's called "calling the team's bluff" and Maccagnan would be an idiot to release him any sooner than the 18th just because Harvin says he's not going to restructure.
Leverage is having him under contract for a full week with the ability to try and sign other FA WRs. Percy may think it's in his best interest to restructure his deal to maximize his value. The Jets meanwhile will be able to gauge the market and see what works best for the team.
no reason to cut him till damn near the due date if at all. at this point I want to see what kinds of moves are made in FA before we let him go. he's overpriced by about 4 million give or take, but its not like we're strapped for cash and good at WR without him. if we get another WR for Decker prices Harvin becomes dead weight, but we don't know who's available yet. could be nobody, or players of relative overall value. hes plan B, he's our insurance and leverage in many fronts.
i see many reasons why keeping harvin past the march 19 deadline should be a no brainer 1) we have $40+ mill in cap room, more money than we will spend this offseason, yet some of you want to cut harvin for the cap relief? its time to invest in our offense. we need to spend this offseason plugging the holes on the offensive line, not creating new ones in the WR core ... also, we can squeeze harvin into a more team friendly number all the way up to the final 53 man cut. the jets hold all of the leverage 2) woody has to spend 89% of the cap in cash from 2013-2016. we werent even close in 2013 or 2014 ... the cap relief from cutting harvin does us little good in the long run 3) as for the fourth round pick, we still have to give up a sixth if we part with harvin ... harvin minus a fourth > bargain receiver minus a sixth ... i say bargain receiver because most of the big time WRs will be re-signed/franchised. the couple that make it to FA will be receiving over-inflated offers (pretty much what were paying harvin, except with far more guaranteed money) from the other teams with an abundance of cap room and needs at WR like the colts, raiders, jaguars, browns, and titans
I can't understand why people undervalue playmakers so much. Maybe that's why they never stick with this team. Is 4 catches for 70 yards couple with 3 rushes for 35 really a difference from 6 catches for 100 yards? He makes his plays in a variety of ways but that opens up the different facets of the offense and makes it multidimensional. Teams use jet sweeps these days, look at how effective it was for the Patriots running it with Julian Edelman down the stretch. If we had two clear cut very good receivers on the outside I'd understand the want to bag Harvin. Since we don't, I don't get why everyone doesn't want him. Hopefully the leaks that we're going to cut him are a leverage move by our front office to push him to renegotiate.
Our cap space is misleading. When you factor in Wilkerson and Harrison, we are probably underpaying those 2 core defensive line by 12mm once they are extended. Then factor in fact that we have no clear replacement for David Harris, no clear starting cornerbacks, no clear free safety, filling those holes alone could cost us 10-15mm. If you honestly can say that Harvin will play a full 16 game season and that him, Decker and Kerley is a receiving core worthy of 18mm per year, then sure, keep him. But if you don't see him in the caliber of Dez Bryant/Demaryius Thomas, then why pay him as such? And we have limited leverage with Harvin...our QB is Geno Smith so he won't have great numbers. Our only leverage is that we can cut him a week into free agency after everyone else has spent their money.
After 7 + years of watching lame ass QBs throw footballs to the Macins of the world, I'm ready to spend my Sunday afternoons watching an exciting playmaker and winning some fn games. Make it happen.
wilkerson already has a high cap number due to the fifth year option, signing him to an extension is not likely to move that number too much ... snacks is a rfa, he should not break the bank this year you also left out the cap saving from cutting cj. the conservative estimates currently have us with $48 mill in cap room, including harvin ... with harvin on board and snacks and wilk re-signed, we can sign a cb, fs, ilb, og, and rb and still have a fair amount of money left over and harvin is not going to make as much as dez and thomas ... those guys will be making closer to megatons $15 mill per than harvins $10.5 mill per. plus they will have a lot of money guaranteed
Stupid move if we cut him. Restructure him and keep him here. We have a TON of money and we can't let playmakers like him walk. We need his type of ability on this offense, especially with a young QB. And I would be pissed as hell because you can almost guarantee Miami will nab him. They will be cutting Wallace and a guy like Harvin would be a perfect alternative.
I don't know that anyone is undervaluing "play makers." I think it's more the idea, or at least it is with me, of saying that Harvin isn't worth $10.4 million or whatever he's set to get and not worth having to give up a 4th round pick. If he had a "real" position and didn't have the injury issues that he has had, it would be an entirely different matter. The thing is he does have the injury issues, and he doesn't have a "real" position. With the money they're set to pay Harvin per year, they could conceivably sign at least two starting-quality FAs (a FS and an OG, for example), and maybe even three. With the 4th round pick they should be able to find a quality role-player, depth, or even a scatback (quick, fast) RB in the draft that could play the same role as Harvin. Those additions would help the team immensely more than keeping Harvin imo.
That's your blind opinion. Restructuring is not that easy to do. Harvin has to be willing to restructure, then they have to arrive at a salary with which both can live and will work in the team's salary structure. As I responded to Vilma:
we should only cut him if theres an alternative weapon thats worth more than Decker. I'm playing Harvins continued presence by ear, he shouldn't be cut because he MIGHT get in the way of a busy offseason, he should only be cut once he's a luxury. MO,snacks, a couple CB's, maybe a RB or G, 50 mil is enough to work with, I'm not convinced we cut him out of principle.
That's a hell of a lot more leverage than you're giving it credit for. If the guy is making $10.5M but it's not guaranteed and he's cut a week after free agency starts, he's not getting anywhere near that. At least, one would think he wouldn't, particularly with the general league-wide believe that he's a talented gimmick player. He's also owed about $40M in total. He's not likely to get a $40M deal anywhere. That means the Jets can hold him over a barrel to accept a deal with less per year in exchange for some guaranteed money, of which he has none. If he says no, they cut him and he takes his chances.
Wilk has a high cap number but he wants to get paid in the JJ Watt range so u can still add another $4mm per year to the annual cap hit. I guess we will see what contracts Dez Bryant and D Thomas get. If you think Harvin is going to stick around for a short term deal with little guaranteed money, I think that's not even close. You ready to throw $10mm or 20mm for Harvin for a multi-year deal? The whole reason people liked the deal initially was that there was no guaranteed money. He hasn't really proven to me he's part of the long term answer at WR for this team and I prefer a bonafide true WR for that kind of money.
