He may be worth the money (if he can stay healthy, and that's a BIG "IF"), but he isn't worth the money AND the 4th round pick. Cut his ass.
Who is the last 4th round pick that the Jets made that makes you want to give up a proven playmaker? For me it would be Jerrico Cotchery and that's a decade ago now. Early 4th round picks have value but you'd give up your 4th rounder every year for a 26 year old playmaker.
No I wouldn't, not for a 26 year-old playmaker who doesn't really have a position and who has major problems staying healthy and on the field, and who is being grossly overpaid for his production.
Harvin has a very well defined position. He's played it for 3 teams running now in Minnesota, Seattle and the Jets. If he's ok with that then he's valuable. If he's not, well he'll move on to the 4th team to use him that way and see if things change, which is unlikely. You don't get a chance to try to be a great WR in the middle of your prime if you were a slash before that. Nobody is going to pay you to try to become a great WR. If you really want to do that then you're going to wind up signing a 1 year deal somewhere fairly cheap. That may be what happens. And I would take the 26 year old playmaker over a blind 4th round pick every day of the week and twice in Sunday. Add up all the Jets 4th round picks recently and they don't come close to the value of a Percy Harvin used correctly.
The more I think about it, the more I'd be surprised if they didn't. Huge salary and cap savings if cut, 4th round pick, pickup of the old regime... On the other hand, he's a playmaker when he's healthy and would presumably be an outstanding weapon for Gailey. If they can resign him for a lot less and only sacrifice a 6th then it's a possibility. But if they go get CJ Spiller, he can fill a somewhat similar offensive weapon role
Harvin needs to restructure, I like the guy but its too much to for a guy with his injury history at a position we are already locked into Decker/Kerley for. I'd rather we spent that money on a dyed in the wool outside WR. At the very least that are better compliments for Decker and Kerley. I read someplace this draft is supposed to be good for WR again. Let's pick up that WR in the first 3, get a guy like Cobb and grab a full service TE to team with Amaro. The combination of these moves could do more to complete our offense than just having Harvin.
I buy that he is better than a 4th round pick. I just doubt that any other team would give him 10.5 if the Jets turn him loose. He has to restructure or he has to go.
Jets would be wise to pass on Harvin for that money. He's a specialty player at best. They'd be better off shooting for some of the more well rounded receivers on the market this spring.
I believe and don't blame these players for getting all the money they can. The owners do, so why not the players?
Then you release him. But your statement of "you're either gonna keep him or you aren't at that price" is wrong. That's the whole point behind leverage.
People need to understand something. IF WE RESIGN HARVIN AT ANY POINT BEFORE THE DRAFT, WE LOSE OUR 4TH ROUNDER. Doesn't matter if we cut him and resign him, if he is on our roster come draft day, we lose our 4th. If he isn't, that pick becomes a 6th.
